I wouldn't say they're better, nor worse. Just different:
The new ones have that Hollywood blockbuster polish, and a specific focus. The older ones do give that "older decade adventure movie" feel.
Dvdcompare would imply that the euro sets are missing the extended cuts, and a few audio/gallery extras.

The boxset was released in 2008 which was 40 years after the first movie came out.
