Looks real hot but have no idea what these usually cost. Is this a recent price drop? What's the usual price for an 8GB player?

I agree. I bought one of their old Play.com branded mp3 players. Worst piece of tech ever. Poor build quality and really crap software.

Stay away from these products.

Be aware that these 'cheap' MP3 players will probably have a cheap DSP chip, so in low volume or between tracks you may hear a hiss. Still cheap for an 8gb player though.

get a 2GB sansa clip+ for £20 and stick in an micro SD card. sansa clip+ sound quality is the business.
#7
wow is this how much these things cost? in my apple universe this rocks my world at this price. although i am happy to pay 'over the odds' for my 'rubbish apple kit' so let's not get started on that. but surely for my mum this would be great

Yup, buts theres stuff thats made in china and then theres cheap Chinese rubbish. Apple/Microsoft/SanDisk et al will manufacture their products in China but will expect higher standards of quality. Generic non-branded products are manufactured in China to the spec of whoever is manufacturing them, usually not to the same quality standards as product designs that are specifically exported from Western regions.

There's two in my household. An 8GB micro SD card is only £10.99 from Play and the 16GB and 32GB ones will drop in price in no time with the speed technology.
They play FLAC and OGGs files too and they're smaller than the size of a matchbox!

The difference being that this is made by some poor 5 year old asian kids in awful working conditions with extremely low quality plastics.

Apple, quality? Whilst I love OSX the ipod is a substandard mp3 player. Average to below sound quality doesn't mean "higher standards of quality" in my world.

Sandisk aren't a great example either, there are decent chinese made products, but sandisks like are blown away by the japanese manufacturers (kingston etc).

Same as pretty much all made in china products - why do you think western companies outsource to countries like china? The lack of worker protection programs.
#15
I bought this some time ago from Play.com but at a much higher price! Nice to see it has been reduced to a price that reflects its quality. This is definitely one of the tackier MP3 models available.
#16
Adding to the mentioned, I also have bought a play.com mp3 player in the past and it went straight back for a refund after a day due to a fault. It was a blessing really as didn't like a single thing about it once received.

That was a while back so I can't comment or rate this as they may...... may have notched it up a gear. Personal experience has kept me away though.

To stop a spate of suicides, Foxcon (com?) increased pay by 30% and then another 70% in one week.

I agree- the Sansa clip+ is an excellent mp3 player. The sound quality is superb. Also songs stored on the micro SD card are integrated with those stored on the internal memory and are presented as one unified library.

By default the volume is factory limited and some people complain it's too quiet. However you can turn off the volume limiter in the settings menu. Just navigate to- Settings>System Settings>Volume>High.

Then this little wonder rocks!

The included headphones are OK sound quality wise- definitely better than those that come with iPods. I invested in a pair of Klipsch Image X10's which at £176 cost about 7 times more than I paid for the Sansa clip+ but they are worth every penny. If your budget doesn't stretch that far the Klipsch S2's at £30 are great value and deliver outstanding deep bass and are very comfortable

but they've stopped making payments to staff who die whilst employed by them, as they found a suicide letter from one of them saying he did it so his family gets the payment foxconn made, which was something like 2 years annual salary. they concluded that as conditions were a bit better at foxconn than other factories in the area, that the suicides were by workers trying to pass money to families by taking advantage of the death benefit

WHO CARES ?
Not our problem.

People with a conscience care.

It is our problem when due to the way workers are treated so that we in the west can have cheap, badly made crap they start killing themselves as the only way to get a fair deal for their families. It's our problem when the entire world hates us for exploiting them. It's our problem when they start fighting back.

And as decent human beings it is our problem when items we want are made by children for a pittance.

 I can't enjoy owning a product or giving it a place in my home if I know it has cost someone else such hardship. It stops being a hot deal.

lots of people care. even if you are heartless and don't give two ****s about the individuals and families, it puts bad publicity in the way of the company and in the way of companies like apple who use the factory. it makes shareholders of foxconn concerned, and it makes shareholders of companies like apple concerned as the bad publicity is usually bad for business. thus they increase the wages of the staff and relocate factory operations elsewhere, which is all at a cost. thus manufacturing is more expensive, and that cost is passed back to the consumer, and as the products they make are so incredible widespread you have no idea, it means that so many people are effected by the increase in price. and people care when products cost more

so loads of people care, and i'm sure you'll be one of the first to moan when the prices increase, as you don't seem to give a **** about the staff and only the price. but you will care

and apart from that it doesnt have a charger, so you need a pc to hand, so its no good for holidays..

so not a good deal
