This should get hot as the play tv post earlier was £37 from Currys.

Hard to find them in stock, though. My local CeX actually has one, still sealed, for £28. I'm thinking I should pick it up tomorrow.

They give a VERY good picture indeed through a HDMI lead, but do not buy this if you think you will get FTA HD through it in the UK. Our lords and masters have decided to implement a completely different broadcasting standard to the rest of Europe, which is not compatible with any available receivers, including PlayTV

Definitely a hot deal, although it was posted a few weeks back.

By the way, don't be put off if you go to buy this and find it's marked up at £60. My local Sainsburys has had it labelled at full price for months, but it goes through the till at £29.99.

Very good product, paid 35 for mine. Does what you want it to very well, I use it for recording MotD to watch at my convenience (and quickly delete afterward if united lost :P).

In my experience, prices have been around this level for a while, possibly anticipating the HD upgrade as mentioned above. Picture quality on this is second to no other that i have seen on a SD broadcast though, so its up to you.

Especially worth it imo if you've added a bigger HDD, so you can fit lots of recording on it at around a gig per hour, to watch back when suits you, a bit like a poor man's Sky :P

been looking at these.Couple of questions for those in the know -

firstly, do you need an additional antenna or does it stream through wifi?
if it's wifi, what the range in channels like?

Thanks

You need an antenna. It then picks up all the freeview channels.

I've also been looking at these for a while and wondered if it's possible to move the recorded tv shows to a USB stick to transfer to PC for further editing (I assume they are mpeg2 files?). I've been using PC DVB TV cards for years but would like one of these as a back up or in case there's 2 things on tv at the same time on different channels that I want

Yes, you can. Firstly you export them from playTV to the XMB, then you can copy to a USB drive. Can't remember what format the files are in.

These have dual tuners anyway so you will be able to record 2 things at once I believe
#12
As these are dropping in price, is the new one worth waiting for?
HD or whatever?
#13
They have dual tuners, but will only allow you to record one programme at a time (while watching another)....

I don't think there's actually been an announcement of an HD one yet. So it's all speculation really.

Why do you think it looks 'pants'? If you have a PS3 already then it's a great way to expand it's capabilities to watch and record free to air digital TV channels... and by all accounts it does it very well. Try and find a decent PVR for £30... or come to that a decent pair of pants!

Did you know that you can use the Play TV unit with a PC? if that helps

Exactly.
How it looks 'pants' is beyond me. You can't get a PVR like that for £30!
#19
How do you prove to Currys that the price is lower in Sainsbury?
banned#20
If like me the nearest Sainsburys doesn't do this you can get Currys to price match http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/631005/play-tv-for-ps3-25-99-instore-curry

I have a sony dvd recorder and a sony stand alone freeview box. Ive tried play tv through my playstation, which is connected by hdmi and the picture looked very soft with overblown colour by comparison to the other sony sources. I wasnt impressed at all. Also my son has play tv and im not impressed with his either, so it wasnt a faulty unit.

He's somewhat right, play tv looks worse on my telly comparing with the picture from inbuilt freeview tuner, and I feed ps3 through HDMI. But the pause/rewind/record and watch functionalities are amazing and I can't live without them now.
#23
i looked at the demo, i guess it just doesnt compliment my set up.. if i had an aeriel antennae i would just plug it into my tv.. i suppose i just dont get any personal advantage
#24
These are great, one of the best things i've bought for my PS3. Gives you a good upscaled picture:thumbsup: I paid £39.99 for mine & it was well worth it

Recording TV, rewinding live TV, Recording one thing while watching another/playing games. Done!
If you don't want that, then it's not 'pants'. It's just not what you're looking for.
#26
Looks hot. Anyone know if this is compatible with PS3 80GB? Playstation's website says just 40GB and 60GB versions.
#27
My TV has built-in freeview but the Play TV looks better and a lot smoother. Had mine for a while, very impressed with it
#28
to the guys that have one of these, if ps3 is next to tv and that oviously has a aerial already, do you just take a feed from that tv aerial(split) or have to have another aerial, cheers
#29
starsparkle2311
I would imagine it is, I've got a 120GB. Doesn't mention anywhere on the box which versions it is or isn't compatible with, so I would take that as meaning it's suitable for all:)

You plug the aerial straight into the back of the PlayTV box:thumbsup:

Thx for reply, yeh i gathered that, so do you still need the ps3 on if i just want to watch tv only, or is it like a straight through box like if i had a video recorder connected, thx
#30
starsparkle2311
Well yes, because it's just like a freeview box:thumbsup:

ok cheers

Indeed, exported files are in m2ts. An episode of Top Gear will be around 2GB - illegally downloaded 720p mkv format is only half of that with better quality. There is no DRM so you are free to copy, convert or edit or do whatever you want to the programme :-D
Exported videos will lose subs though

As it connects through usb socket it works with any PS3.

Personally it is not pants. It's a fantastic bit of kit. Reviews consider it to have one of the best interfaces around, fantastic TV Guide too.

It even wakes your PS3 up to record shows, lets you play games while recording and also watch one channel while recording the other.

will it work abroad, in other eu countries like france which have different freeview signals?

As mts format is Mpeg Transport Stream you can often just rename file to mpg extension and it plays on most devices that support Mpg files.
