Play TV for the Playstation 3. This was in the Ipswich store, cheapest I have seen so far.

Got one from Play for £40 a few weeks ago, and it was worth every penny. V fast programme guide, intuitively laid out, very responsive - kicks **** out of the Virgin HD service and its crappy interface.

Good deal, but I've not managed to find one anywhere.

Yep, it works on the same basis freeview does I think, it needs a pretty decent signal

are any HD channels available through playTV yet?
I remember hearing that it might be updated to support some over time but haven't heard anything since..?

Managed to get one of these for £29.99 at comet via price match!

Really good value for the money, much better than my last freeview box!

Does anyone know if Currys do price match?

Cheers :)

I know PC world does, but I am not sure if Sainsburys is included

Only glitch with these is that even after last firmware update it doesn't do series linking as such. It will record a given slot for the same time each week indefinitely, however.

O and the more you record the bigger a HDD you'll need.

O and it won't handle freeview HD when it comes out, allegedly, though it'll probably be a good few years before FHD becomes good enough to worry about missing... if that makes sense

This is a great price for what is basically a digi freeview box with PVR functions. I paid £60 for mine only a few months back and I thought that was good value. So at half price this is an excellent deal :)

With the latest update, 1.21 I think you can record HDTV.

This is a good product if you happy recording the one channel and you can watch another at the same time. Its not been updated for a while and I'm still waiting for the series link and its lags behind the leaders in PVR technology. You also may need a bigger harddrive 120gb+ should be big enough. For the price though, you can't grumble.

Hello all

I've had playtv for some time now....here are my observations:

Quality of picture very good.
Guide good.
Not updated often by Sony
Does not do series link, rather you can only record multiple occasions at the same time/date - which doesn't always work.
Will never show HDTV as it has the wrong chipset, although upscaled picture on HDTV's of standard definition content is very good.
Cheap PVR with some premium features, series link is a big omission though.
Bargain for the money £30/£40 mark.
Would recommend getting a bigger hard disc if you can to compliment this.

All the best

:-)

Its already updated for HD, but you wont get it in the UK. People in the UK need a new box which is DVB2 ready.

I think i will buy one of these once the digital switch over happens in March (in my area) then i should get a much better signal as the analogue will be turned off.

So does this include a remote?

No, you will need to either use your controller or buy an official or unofficial remote control. I highly recommend the official sony blue tooth remote. Some good deals have been posted on this forum lately for it.

Many thanks OP, got the last one on the shelf in the Ipswich branch last saturday!
Very good package and even though I have Sky HD already, it'll be a great addition to my setup, giving me even more recording options!
Cheers!

Just a note to say that Currys did a price match against Toys R Us, and I managed to pick one up in store at Currys for just under £30 :) Still baffled why its soo much more on play.com etc...

Oh and having got it up and running, have to say its well worth it. No remote with it, but (as with blu-ray etc...) your controller works just fine. If you have/want a controller it comes with an overlay for the blu-ray one you can get.
