#2

Add a controller and a respectable size HDD and this is not a good deal.

Where?, don't say Sendit as that is far from guaranteed
#7
cold - £25 more and you can get a slim with a bigger hard drive and a DS3
#8
Hot good deal the 40gb can play some ps2 games. Id rather get this than an 80gb or the new one then spend the difference in price (£45-£50) on buying a bigger hard drive.

i thought only the 60gb could play the ps2 games

UK Models of 40GB and 80GB can NOT play PS2 games

Yep, the 60GB was the only model released in the EU that could playback PS2 games, the rest can only do PS1.

These will be £100-150 soon. When the new one has a HDD three times bigger, takes up less space and uses less energy it's an absolute no-brainer that the old one will plummet in price.
suspended#15
not too bad of a deal but its a shame u have to buy a pad for it which cost £30-£35, so ure looking at £250 for the ps3, game and pad.

fair enough the ps3 slim is out but the new one just looks so cheap, will wait to see what ppl say about the slim.. its cheaper for a reason.

HDD are cheap and can be upgraded anytime really.
#16
the new slim version is due out and it will be £249, Personally I think that would be a better deal.
#17
I was expecting the value of the phat PS3 to soar - everyone seems to be all over the new slim unit though.

I appreciate that a consoles aesthetics don't really count a bit, but i thought that the PS3 was a real thing of beauty, yet the PS3 slim looks really minting IMHO. Plus you lose the Linux OS option (yeah, i know most people aren't interested in this but it's a big plus for me) aswell as the nice touches such as the touch sensitive drive bay.

Am i the only one who would go for a chubber PS3?

Its also far from certain whether they will honour it.

I had placed one, but am remaining doubtful as its too good a discount and not what the code was meant to be used with.

£200 for a brand new 40GB is a pretty good deal and I voted hot.

For those wanting a Blu-Ray player this is a nice system and a nice price. On Sunday this would have unanimously been voted hot, but now the Slim is causing people to vote cold.
#19
80gbs were £250 in game today with any new release.

take £40 for the game, £30 for the controller............
#20
Sorry. This is way overpriced. Cold considering slim imminent release. These should be at least £150 if they want to clear.
#21
dumb deal. for 40 more yu can get the new one with a bigger hard drive and less power consumption. by the way these units are also NOT backwards compatible.

No, I would too (for the Linux option), but not at this price. These will be less than £150 within three months, mark my words.

its not that hot mate

2 models old now

and 80 gigs will be that price soon if not lower as they try to flog out old stock
#24
None in my Tesco Extra anyway. They had a LBP bundle for around £267.

I like the fat one better too.

the slim looks cheaper made a bit plasticy, I think this is a way to cut costs.

personally I would wait to see if there are any hardware problems that pop up. im sure its a solid unit but after the 360 pa lava I think I would wait and see before buying.
#26
everyone is going on about the slim ps3, have you seen it? It looks like a cheap toy, rough matt black finish, you cant install linux, it needs a stand to sit up vertically, the ps logo does not spin and even though its fans are quieter the disc drive is noisier!

I thought the 40gb, 80gb and 160gb ps3 looked a bit cheapy with its silver paint instead of chrome trim and letters but man they are beautiful in comparison to the slim! guys dont be fooled in to wanting a slim just because its newer, it is cheaper because it has been made to a tight budget and it shows! wait till the 80gb goes down which it will significantly after september 1st and get one of them!

Im just glad I got a 60gb at launch, PS2 backwards compatibility, 4 usb, SACD compatible and a memory card reader!
#27
hmmmm,

dropped by £60 from this time last year.

This will have a pad just not the dualshock 3, the 60gb and 40gb came with the original sixaxis pad, the same pad minus rumble, also the original sixaxis is slightly transparent black which looked cool!

The 80gb PS3 was the first console to come packed with the dual shock 3, the PS3 has never been sold with no pad!

sorry im voting cold, its not nation wide, must be store specific

Jeez, a lot of people buying consoles based on looks
At the end of the day it is just a toy.

I can't see any reason to go for the older unit, except maybe price.

The new one is cheaper, smaller, has power consumption, is quieter and has a larger HDD.

Additionally, the current 'fat' units are already compromised with less features than the original PS3s (2 USB ports less, no MS/SD/CF slots, no PS2 backward compatibility and no SACD playback) and uglier detailing on the case (they are visibly cheaper looking than the original).

If you want the most capable and best quality construction and finish PS3 UK-spec unit you'll need to hunt down a 60gig box secondhand. The 'intermediate' fat versions now make no sense at all, unless you can get them dirt cheap.

The jury is still out on lower energy consumption. When sony said it now uses 2/3rds of the power. they were comparing it to the original 60gb. The 80gb uses about 35% less than the 60gb so the new slim may be the same as the 80gb.

States here that the slim CECH-2000 uses 250W which is more than the 80GB.

http://uk.playstation.com/games-media/news/articles/detail/item229653/Entertainment-on-PS3-has-a-new-look/

My 80GB is silent so cant see the new one being quieter ;-)

Seeing the slim is about £100 more than the 80gb amazon one (after sellling the 3 games and blu-ray), now is a great time to pick up a PS3 for around £150-£170

This is definitely store specific.

I was in a large Tesco (Lee Mill) this morning and the only deal they have is for the Little Big Planet 80GB bundle with Dead Space for £292. If stores like Tesco want to shift stock, they're going to have to reduce the prices of the fat ps3 by a lot more than that.

Personally, I'd be fine with getting the fat PS3 over the slim if the price was right. It's just stupid to pay more for a fat 80gb PS3 than a 120GB slim though.

Last weeks Asda deal was pretty good for an 80gb with 2 games for £250, but according to the store I rang up yesterday, that offer ended Saturday, and they are now selling for £299.

Like I say, stores need to be selling the 80gb fat PS3s for under £200, or bundle an equivalent value in games to justify a purchase in preference to the slim.

So based on that, I'd avoid a 40gb PS3 at £200, with sixaxis rather than dual shock. As others have said, a 40gb should be more like £150.

go for the amazon deal. 80gb with a blu-ray film, 3 games and an hdmi cable for £260. sell the extras = £150-£170 for a new 80gb ps3

I think we'll see better prices in the next few weeks as shops realise they are going to have to get rid of their stock of fatties. Granted the slim isn't a looker but the present model is a little on the hefty side.
Then in a few months, all the retailers will be stocked up and it's time for the Xmas bundle pricewar!

Actually that is a good deal ! I hadn't noticed the free game in box + additional free game + game for a tenner offer.

I was trying to boycott Amazon due to their recent mis prices, but that might be too good an offer.

Don't think you'd get as much for the extras as you're thinking though. You might get about £70 for them if you're lucky.
