i cant believe ps3s are this expensive!

having tried one out at the science museum, I can't say I would choose the ps3 over the xbox360, especially when it's almost twice the price!

First post here some don't flame me but HMV are offering a 10% student discount on the PS3 at £424.99 so £382.99 ish.... don't know if this is all HMV's or just the Student town of Loughborough.....
#6
Proffesser - I don't think you can use student discount on consoles at HMV.

Also - do you all remember how companies "guaranteed" delivery / availability of the xbox 360 on its release? There's a fair chance that that could end up happening again with the PS3!

Its all about the blu ray drive - when you look at it that to get any form of HD DVD or Blue ray drive you have to pay upwards of this price - the fact that its a games console is almost a freebie !

But cant see many kids being able to save up their pocket money to afford one though !

Tsk tsk... shameful... shouldn't students be finding better ways to spend their student grants than laying out a small fortune on a next gen games machine. Surely you should get priorities straight and concentrate on the essentials... beer, drugs, um, Che Guevara posters etc!!!

As most games don't even fill up a DVD, there is no need for high density DVD drives to play games, these drives are purely for watching hi-def films. Seems a bit pointless to "force" consumers to have them on their console (i.e. no option of having a console without).

I agree that there will be very few kids who can afford this!
#10
Can only speak for Loughborough but they have a big hand written poster with 10% off the PS3 "console" and a "Guaranteed" pick up.... and at that price it's probally only "poor" students who can afford them.... with "our" grant money...lol

I still think Microsoft have the right idea with selling it seperatly. Adding a BluRay drive to the PS3 is simply a way for Sony to get their format out of their factories....i doubt it would sell otherwise.

You just have to look at the games released so far and i dont think there are many (1 i think) that has actually gone over the size of a DVD9 - and thats only down to poor compression. Blu-Ray will just make developers lazy.

It's had problems actually playing movies in the US (but thats unsuprising, as all previous drives in Sony consoles (aswell as Microsoft to be fair) are poor in comparison to stand alone players.

Still, back to the topic in hand. Not a bad price for it (you probably won't find it any cheaper without applying vouchers, of which many places won't accept them on consoles)- still too expensive though.
#12
Oh ok well the student discount looks like a great one to go for then! (Although it's still more expensive than the 360 :p)

Personally I am very dubious about the guaranteed availability, there's not much anyone can do if sony don't have enough PS3s to meet demand. Microsoft didn't release enough 360s and there were plenty of retailers who could not supply the 360 that they had "guaranteed" to their customers. :-(

Very well put, excellent post

There's a LOT of retailers guaranteeing supply on launch day at the moment

Either Sony has got a lot of PS3's ready
or there will be major dissapointment

Is it possible Sony think they have enough to go around?
I doubt it:

Amazon US have NO stock at present
(but Amazon Japan seem to have plenty)

Maybe everyone is scared off by price tag
and £425 is a lot for people to risk in hope of an ebay profit

Motorstorm uses 18Gb!
When asked how much space the game takes up on a Blu-Ray Disc, the developer replied: "We use most of it, about 18GB if I remember correctly (and everything on the disk is actualy compressed at a 2:1 ratio too as the CELL is so powerful, that it can decompress the data faster than it can read it." The team also reiterated how working on the PS2's World Rally Championship gave the team the "pedigree in racing games" and noted that with each release, the graphics and gameplay bumped up another level. We can expect the same with future games from Evolution Studios on the PS3.
Check out more screens and information at the official site on www.motorstorm-thegame.com.

Whether it needs 18Gb or could be compressed is another story!

Slap me round the head with a wet fish it's a Virgin not HMV...... god these shops all look the same......Sorry!!!
#17
proffesser. I work in Loughborough, can you get me one at that price!!!

Is that just off the console or games and other stuff if you order it at the same time?
#18
I'm not a student but work at the UNI so have access to about 2500 of them so probally could sort something out.... have a look in Virgin in the rushes and tell me if I'm seeing things..... Appmacguy surly you must know a student??? there's so many of them!! LOL

Apparantly UK have 1'000'000 consoles for launch date, which as far as i'm concerned is plenty for a March launch with a high price! I've preordered mine.

I'm sure all companies have been given a list of how many consoles they will be getting and sorting it out accordingly. I know some have said they have none left so something seems to be going to plan!
#20
proffesser, sent you a message.

Winchy, first I know about that many units over here, I'd understood 220,000. Who has sold out then? Last I looked about a week ago Argos and Amazon were stiiiiillllll taking pre-orders :)
#21
Its crazy really - some people are bidding on ebay up to 500 quid for guaranteed preorders from argos etc when the shops themselves are still taking orders for less money. They will run out before launch methinks but have obviosly done a pretty good job at 'promising' large numbers to the retailers so far. I suppose we just have to home they deliver on those promised numbers.

yeh and when you see the graphics in Motorstorm your see why just simply awsome thats why the game needs that much space, and think of the potential of future games to fill up a BR disc, there be great and look awsome, most of my pc games im playing now are 10 gig installs.

Anyone know much about the blue ray drive in the retail versions?
Can we expect it to be a dirt cheap drive like most consoles?

I always thought speed was more important than space, and blu ray is slower than dvd.

the reason a lot of the PS3 games are so big are currently down to two reasons. Simply padding to make the game bigger (probably in case people want ot make an ISO it's a hell of a lot of data to download so off putting). the other reason is to do with the read times of the BR discs. they are ideal for movies but not so games. The read speeds are low so to help get round this the game producers are duplicating data on the discs to make it easier for the drive to load thus meaning the data size increases.
#29
Can anyone link to a reliable list of launch titles?
I've had extensive play time on the ps3 due to import hungry friends but to be honest nothing has wet my whistle.

I'm really on the fence about this at the moment, the spec looks good etc. but from what I've read the architecture leaves much to be desired.

BR is alot faster, even fastest dvd 16x CAV read speed is max 21.13MB/s.

BR upto 400mb/s :) unbeleivable speeds, its only the hardware that restricts the speed with BR so it depends what drive is in the PS3, but i bet its quite good as sony the inventors and want it to work.

pasted from BR spec website

While the media itself limited the recording speed in the past, the only limiting factor for Blu-ray is the capacity of the hardware. If we assume a maximum disc rotation speed of 10,000 RPM, then 12x at the outer diameter should be possible (about 400Mbps).

Its hard to know whether to believe the spec sheet or the devs...

The spec does look promising though, although the blu ray drives will be first gen in the ps3 so will be crap by next years standards.
Of course, that doesnt matter as its not next year.
#33
yeh remember at even 1x speed its defined as 36Mbps, and i think peope forgetting dvd5 say for instance even at 16x only 21mb/s on 4.4gig disc, BR have maybe upto 25/50gig so even 1 x is alot more speed because of the amount of data on disc, just like a dual layed dvd now burning at 1 or 2x is alot more than 8x dvd5, think you know what i mean, but i think ps3 will be 2x even.

pasted from BR.com

How fast can you read/write data on a Blu-ray disc?

According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x speed is defined as 36Mbps. However, as BD-ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data transfer rate the minimum speed we're expecting to see is 2x (72Mbps). Blu-ray also has the potential for much higher speeds, as a result of the larger numerical aperture (NA) adopted by Blu-ray Disc. The large NA value effectively means that Blu-ray will require less recording power and lower disc rotation speed than DVD and HD-DVD to achieve the same data transfer rate. While the media itself limited the recording speed in the past, the only limiting factor for Blu-ray is the capacity of the hardware. If we assume a maximum disc rotation speed of 10,000 RPM, then 12x at the outer diameter should be possible (about 400Mbps). This is why the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) already has plans to raise the speed to 8x (288Mbps) or more in the future.

Theoretical is great but it's not reality yet and that's what you;re dealing with because of the early drives. They will probably improve the drive over time but currently the read speeds are slow hence the need to duplicate the data on the discs.... which was what my post was about all along.
#35
Theres a whole lot of 'potential' surrounding this launch.

true, but even at 1x still faster than dvd 16x, also it looks like the 60gig ps3 is comeing with BR 2x read drive even better.

There was an article about, i think it was Oblivion, having to be put onto the disc twice so it could be read fast enough (otherwise load times were terrible).

Either way, the Bluray drive in the PS3 will no doubt be poor in comparison to a stand alone one - but at the end of the day, it's going to be much cheaper. There isn't a chance in hell they'd be making their drives as good as they actually could though. Bluray is pretty much an untested format - it put the PS3 launch back by a year, so there's obviously still going to be flaws in it, but they've pushed it out regardless.

You'll find, even if Motorstorm (just under 15GB) is that size, as Guy H has said, most of that will be padding and also poor compression - if you think the most recognised 'best graphics' currently out is seen as Gears of War, that fits onto a DVD9 fine.

Compression is becoming more and more advanced and with alittle work it's perfectly possible to cut games down, Sony want you to believe otherwise, but of course they do, they want to try and dominate a massive market in the new disc media - Sony going on about how much space there is will just make developers sloppy in their work and leave unessecary code and not so good compression methods.
#39
Not to knock the ps3 or 360 but I think that these HD formats are a little premature right now, they offer little more except exhuberent price tags.

Is it just coincidence that Blueray and Betamax both begin with B.....

Time will tell.
