Our local HMV (York) had a white board outside claiming PS3 megadeal

The offer is: 80GB playstation 3 pack with one controller plus any three games of your choice that cost £39.99 or less.

They said I could choose an extra controller priced £39.99 as a substitute for one of the games

Also, I could choose more expensive games but just pay difference, e.g. I could get one game at £39.99, one at £49.99 and a controller for £39.99, total price £309, i.e. just pay the extra tenner.

This was a lot better than the other bundles in store. I'm not an expert but this is the best bundle offer I've seen by far

NOTE: The guy in the store said this was an offer being promoted by their local area managers so may not necessarily be available nationwide (he said they have a bit more freedom with offers as they have competition from Zavvi and Game on same street - but then again this might just be his sales pitch!)

Do they still not allow the 10% student discount @ HMV?

EDIT Hot op btw, I will investigate it locally tomorrow...........
#2
Yeah very cheap as long as you can obtain one, almost as good as the deals before christmas!!

Think the 10% is still on, also there was a deal whereby if you had a barclays student account, you could buy gift vouchers for 10% less than retail, so effectively you could get 20% off if presented your student id at the till with your discounted vouchers, but that was 6 months ago or so??
#3
cracking deal this one! Good that you get to choose any 3 games and don't have to just take the ones in the set deal!

not available on console bundles according to website

I went into a hmv store last Sat with my son to buy a bundle, my son didn't like the bundled games and I asked if I could change the games, so the sales bloke took my young laddie up to the games and told him to pick any 3 games off the shelf! Result.
#6
zavvis like across the road from hmv in york so its a good deal=)
#7
lol common ...until a ps3 comes down to 199 quid i wont call anything a deal .... its still overpriced imo
#8
overpriced with a blu ray drive, hard drive and cell chip? Not really, although it is fairly pricey if you just want a console.

Well considering this comes with around £100 worth of games, it isn't far off £199 (I assume you would be buying games to go with the console?).
#10
i get the feeling hmv could be the next one to follow in the footsteps of zavvi - this deal could be just the beginning
#11
i think they might well crash and burn if their online store was not doing so well. there seems to be very few people actually buying in their stores.
as for this deal, i would say that if this can be had elsewhere then it is hot. 3 games of your choice is a great offer as a lot of bundles come with 1 game i dont want and the others had two games i would not play. to be able to pick any games myself is a good offer.
#12
An awesome deal. Am so in need of this now... just need a job now...
#13
Amazing deal, shame I've spent all my money on Xbox games these last few weeks haha.

Heat added, well done OP great find!
#14
i got mine in November for £207 with two games! anything over £250 is over priced!

i need to find a wii for under £150 now!

Where did you get that deal from ?

Play.com have a similar offer for the PS3 for £290 although they don't have any in stock at the moment

£207 new?

If you want a Blu Ray Player and a games console, then a PS3 is perfect. It is expensive, but a fine piece of kit. Plus it uses standards such as BlueTooth and actually has built in wireless (unlike the £50 xbox ad on)

Plus, it isnt the console which is gonna set you back, its the Games. granted Xbox has better titles, but i actually have all 3 consoles and think the PS3 is the best designed console (everything included and most of all; QUIET) Xbox has all the games, but the hardware is noisy and doesnt play HD or have wireless. Wii, well, **** kiddy games. Hopefully Wii 2 will grow up a bit. Doesnt have the games for me to fully enjoy the console n e more.

BTW, this HMV deal is not in Cardiff store.

Great Find!

good stuff

good find !

(for those interested - this deal wasnt available in hmv white rose leeds today)

lol at xbots claiming overpriced, you wouldn't know good tech if it red ringed on you :) 80gb hdd, bluetooth, wifi, free online gaming, home and bluray all out the box.

PS3 is hot even when it aint in a deal at the moment.
#20
I wasn't able to swap the games in a recent bundle deal from HMV, but I was lucky enough to get student discount. I know this is not usually the case and was told at other stores they don't do it on hardware.
#21
You're using 'home' as a selling point for the PS3?

Please dont start ANOTHER fanboy debate its annoying...its always the same thing RROD...how about the massive failure rate of PS3 HDD & BluRay drives? they are as bad as each other...so no rowing about who's got the best console

BUT it is overpriced...you cant even argue its not

RROD is fixed now. PS3 don't have a massive HDD problem. Both consoles have the same amount of problems with their lasers . Both have similar failure rates. The End.
#24
£299 for a games console? Is that a hot deal? I remember when the N64 was around £250 when that first came out and that just played games! Damn I must be getting old but this just seems overpriced to me.

the 40GB did have a HDD prob...40% fail rate at launch..unsure about the 80GB and the 360 lasers dont fail as often as the PS3 as its a normal laser etc where the Blu Ray is newer so not as 'ironed out'...similar to the old DVD players that failed a lot, as the technology goes on it improves and is refined
End of the day though its a piece of electrical equipment....everything has problems

that is 40% number is not true. that was rumor that came from one belgian retailer and totally unsubstantiated by the forums.

if you are truly concerned about failure rates then visit the neogaf forums and search for the "xbox died post" and the "ps3 died post"

here is the xbox one, i found it because it was on the front page.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=148060&page=192

there are 192 pages worth of discussions here.

the ps3 equivalent also exists somewhere but i can't find it because i am not allowed to search for post. i have no idea how many pages the equivalent ps3 post has but i know it is considerably less.

just found the equivalent ps3 post (using google)

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=150137

it has 15 pages

I THINK, i remember what the problem was now. it was to do with people buying bd-j blu-ray movie enabled disks and thinking that the long delay in loading (i.e. at least 10 minutes) was responsible for the machine being unable to play the blu-ray. i think this was responsible for the wrong report.

I agree that £300 is a lot of money but when you put it like that, it's £50 extra for a machine with blueray (& DVD), MP3, wireless, bluetooth and free online gaming + any 3 games then it doesn't sound so bad!

I think a lot of people just see the xbox and ps3 as Games Consoles. This is a bit of an 'out of date' view but if you do the xbox will at first appear better value as the initial outlay is less. I went for the PS3 due to the Blueray and also that in 3 years time I'd have still spent £0 on the online games compared to 3 years subscription to xbox live + the wireless adaptor.

In the end its up to you, if you want a games/media centre you've got to pay the money, if not there is always the Atari plug and play! :-D
#30
Best thing about the Wii, is that I have over 60 games and I aint bought a single one. Search backup loader on google.

Where are all the smart hotukdealers that let me know how much I can make selling these 3 games at play/cex/ebay and keep the console? Btw its an SOS.
#31
Thats a great deal especially since you can buy any game and if its above 39.99 you can pay the difference.

Before xmas I got mine with any 2 games at 39.99 or less, couldnt make up the difference tho. Did get a blue-ray remote and a blu-ray film as well for same price.

HMV Nottingham ( listergate) are having none of this.
The bundles are set and reckon the only time they offer
alternatives is when they are out of stock of the "set bundle"
items...........nevermind I will keep looking i suppose......
Can anyone please tell me the stores which DO this deal please?
#33
I have just rang both the York HMV stores and both know
nothing about this offer.
One of the stores did say you could change
the game in one of their bundle deals but this is the one that comes
with the blu-ray + blu-ray remote +1 game!

have been lookin for a good ps3 deal for some time and this seems brilliant if its nationwide but how can it be getting so much heat at the moment when there's only been 1 store confirmed doing it?? makes no sense at all

Which store is the one confirmed?
I cannot see a scanned receipt!
Not that I doubt the op, but I have just rang the
stores in Yorkand they had not heard of the deal.........
#36
Going to have to see for myself. Been looking for a good deal for a while now on a ps3 and this seems to be the best. However seems to be little proof of it being nationwide. May have to settle for the 160gb model at pcworld for £350 with 3 games.

The only problem with the Tesco PS3 deal was stock.
Any store that had the PS3 40gb With GT prologue would
have sold it to you for £190 as the bar code was correct
( My local store only had one ps3 left.....beacause it was
on it's own it scanned at £294!!!!! They would not sell it
to me @ £190! )
There is not a stock problem @ HMV

This site amazes me sometimes. Hot deals are shot down in flames, yet deals like this are voted so hot, they are the hottest of the day?
There is no proof of the original offer, indeed someone has called the store the OP said he got the deal from and they know "nothing about such a deal".
No one can get this deal, but it gets voted hot, why? ITS NOT A DEAL! I am going to start a deal post.

XBOX 360 & any 50 Games for £99 in my local Game. Geez.
