Playstation have made a new console with a 40GB hd.
It lacks the Backwards Compatibility (So no playing PS2 titles), the front USB ports are no longer there, along with the memory card readers, but the price is heading in the right direction!

It has two USB 2.0 ports, these are only at the rear of the console.

It comes with one sixaxis wireless controller

*Please note, there is no picture on the website so I borrowed this one from google images.

Which is obviously not a problem considering the VAST library of PS3 games currently available. Seriously can't see why anybody would buy this, unless they just wanted a Blu-ray player.
#4
More details here.

Does have 2 USB ports, reduced from 4.

Why not? The whole point of the ps3/360 is that they were backward compatible (to a point). The 360 gets cheaper but stays at the same spec, the ps3 gets cheaper and lobotomised. Seems like a bit of a rip to me considering the euro PS2 is emulated rather than having the chip so therefore it costs them NOTHING to leave the emulation intact.
#8
well here it is a sub 300 ps3 for anyone wanting one.

These aren't even being released to end of oct/start of nov.

So if thats true, anybody buying at £299 would be an idiot? Opinions. Seems much better value to get the 60GB now.

I don't undrestand why you'd want one that wasn't backwards compatible as you'd have to have youre old ps2 kicking around.

i would have said the whole idea of them is to improve on the older system and play the games designed to take advantage of the newer, better technology. playing the older games is merely a bonus, i cant say i have found myself looking for xbox 1 games or ps2 games to play on the 360 or the ps3.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I think the no backward compatibility means no H/W compatibility which the US machines originally had, since the UK/Europe machines only ever used software emulation it should still be the same for this machine. But I agree, why should we be ripped off in the first place.

Hopefully this new ps3 will mean a drop in the price for the 360 elite which i am more tempted to get than this. Voted hot though, good price for those who want one.

That mostly word games though. What if you had favourites on the old system that you wanted to keep playing? Take two bottles into the shower?

News Story on the new pricing structure etc.

wooohoo price drop the 40gb one looks rubbish tho:|

Im pretty sure that there will be backwards compatibility through software update, i cant see why not, but anyways, this is a hot deal:thumbsup:

Actually the EU BC is a combination of software and hardware. The EU units lack the Emotion Engine chip that some of the US versions have and this is emulated in software, but the unit still needs the GS chip which is hard to emulate due to the embedded DRAM on it.

i dont take 2 bottles into the shower, i do wii in there though.:?

i got rid of all my ps2 games when i got the ps3, saw no point in having them.

i take the point though, especially as at the moment, there are no good games for the ps3, i have found myself buying ( well getting from blockbusters for credit) games like heavenly sword and pirates of the carribean, just so i have something to play on it, my xbox elite has all the shiny new games while the ps3 is my hd player at the moment.

Well i'm deffo not a Sony Fanboy (or 360 come to that) and make no bones about it, but i'd seriously recommend that people wait till the 10th to see what games are included in the 60GB packages as they will without a doubt offer much better value than the 40GB.

I'm just waiting to see Microsofts response:giggle:

By the way, come the 10th I think the PS3 has finally got the edge on the Elite (thanks to the blu-ray), lack of games no withstanding as they will eventually turn up.
#21
Three things i would lke to add.

1. Seems backwards compatibility has been removed altogether:

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/28463/PS3-price-drop-confirmed-40GB-pack-revealed

This was obviously done to reduce costs by completely removing PS2 parts from the PS3 (60G models have PS2 EDRAM in EU) & re-engineering the unit.

2. The 60Gb will also fall in price. RRP £369 i think so maybe had for £350 soon enough.

3. Stop moaning forever people. Nothing is for free. Sony have given you top end Blu-Ray player with one of the best DVD upscaling ability (compared to top end £800+ dvd players). You still have a complete console if you want to do gaming, great media centre for Audio & Video, internet browser, video chat as well as a dual tuner PVR when the addon is released soon. If you love the PS2 games so much than you should keep your PS2 as it probably is best not to wear out the laser on PS3. You can even pick up a PS2 for £30-40 used.

For people on tight budgets this one is a steal otherwise get the 60Gb model, don't moan & move on.

Good price at last, lets be honest though most people won't be getting a PS3 to play PS2 games on.. it's a nice option but the novelty soon wears off, how much hassle is it to keep your old PS2 they're not worth the bother of selling. I grabbed one of those 7" LCD screens off play for £16 so my PS2 has a new lease of life :)

As far as software on the PS3 is concerned Warhawk is superb as is Resistance, Motorstorm, Virtua Fighter5, Stardust, Ninja Gaiden. Soon you'll be able to get Eye of Judgement, Uncharted, Singstar, Ratchet and Clank as well as the countless 3rd party titles like Call of Duty4, Assassins Creed etc etc.

Fair enough but consider, for an extra £50 you get a FULL PS3, 20GB more hard drive space and 2 games. See where i'm going? On those terms the 40GB isn't worth the £299 tag;-)

well im lucky i guess as i managed to get my elite and my ps3 from blockbusters, the elite with halo 3 in the tin was £13.40 ( 12 sponge bobs on the wii) and 5 scooby doos and the ps3 was around £125 what with all the cheeky trade ins.

why are you so obssessed with the ps3?
#29
The £299 model has obviously been brought in so Sony can now say they're sub-£300. I think anyone wanting the full PS3 experience (and better value for money) would be wise to wait to see what the bundle offers are.

Regarding the backwards compatibility issue, it has nothing to do with hardware as it was controlled by software in the UK PS3's. The reason it's not included is that Sony save money on the licensing that they would normally have to pay out for the emulation software needed to make the machine backwards compatible. I don't plan to play PS2 games on a current-gen console tbh, but i'd rather shell out an extra £50 for the other stuff i'd get with the 'value pack'.
#30
Very Hot.

Already £20 off the RRP price. But before you order, you should know that some shops will most likly bundle a game in for £299 (Pro Evo 2008).

I'm not. I just think its good that Sony are finally seeing the light and becoming a bit more competitive in the console market. Personally i'm happy with my Xbox 1:giggle:

As stated above, the EU backwards compatibility was a software AND hardware combination, requiring the GS (graphics) chip to be physically present inside the unit.

The EU backwards compatibility was NEVER entirely done in software and is hard to do because of the nature of the GS chip (and the EDRAM it uses).

This is the details of the offer the suppliers are sending retailers:

Dear Retailer,

I am writing to you to confirm the important events taking place on Wednesday 10 October.

1) Sony will be launching the PlayStation 3 40GB Console at an SRP of £299.99, your cost price for which is £****** effective immediately.

2) The current PlayStation 3 60GB Starter Pack will cease at midnight on the 9th October.

3) The new PlayStation 3 60GB Value Pack will commence on the 10 October with the following components:

PlayStation 3 60GB Console and any 2 of the following titles:

Formula 1 Championship Edition, Genji - Days of the Blade, Motorstorm, Resistance Fall of Man, Ridge Racer 7, Heavenly Sword and Lair.

This will launch at an SRP of £349.99, and your cost price for the PlayStation 3 60GB console is £******

We believe that both configurations offer a superb choice for consumers and this new price point together with an even more competitive offering will present a great opportunity for sales during the peak trading period.

Not to mention, the fact that the European version of the PS3 is already lobotomised...it does not include the Emotion Engine chip that the US/Asian version have. Thats the original PS2 chip, and thus enables far greater backwards compatibility than the standrd European version.

...as always, we get ripped off in this country...paying more for less!!!!

The xbox 360 core console doesn't play original xbox games (you have to buy the £50 HDD), thats in theory exactly what Sony are doing, they've removed some of the extras and lowered the price.

So basically these are the £425 packages. No wonder they're all listed as out of stock on Play:whistling:

This is a price i'd buy at :)
I'll have to save up though ... :-(
#39
Voted cold - personnnally I do not feel this is a hot deal for what you get...
especially with the deals around for the 60gb system or if you own any PS2 games and dont want the hassle of multiple systems.
#40
if anyone is after a cheap 60gb ps3 at the moment then i was in tjhughes today in middlesbrough and they had them reduced to £339.99 with a copy of ridge racer7. i dont no if this is all stores but must be worth checking if your just interested in console with hdmi.
