remember the 40gb one is not backward compatible..

I really don't understand people who care about backwards compatibility. Surely they already own a PS2 and if not, you can pick them up for next to nothing.

Some people dont want the hassle of messing about with wires changing from ps2 to ps3.

Why do you want to have an extra box sitting under the TV:?

Bring on the day when there ain't any console war; just one box for games, TV, music etc. - can't be too long now:p

You are talking to the wrong person on that front; currently under my TV I have a NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, 360, SkyHD, Amp and DVD player!

Its a bit like getting a new ferrari ripping out the engine and putting a 20 year old beetle campervan engine in though.

Shame, as I'm flying from Newcastle airport next week and they don't have a HMV.....

bit of a cheek if you ask me, say its a price cut when in fact they taken bits out to lower price, as soon as sony treat uk gamers with respect then i shall buy one.
so i guess no ps3 for a few yrs:giggle:

fingers crossed for that the 80gb version reaches our shores and at the us equivelent price:thumbsup:

My son has an original PS2 that is on it's last legs. As he has a whole library of PS2 games, I would either have to buy another PS2 (which you can't actually buy for "next to nothing") or upgrade to a PS3, therefore the 40gb version is no good to me, I would rather have the 60gb and let him play all of his old games. :)

That was exactly my point. I was only trying to make people aware. Paying the extra few quid to play your old games on as well is worth it to some people.

typical Sony disdain for the consumer

The under £300 price tag for the 40Gb PS3 is great, but when you realise everything the 40Gb cant do that the 60Gb model can, then you realise it isnt a price drop at all. Sony are trying to fool the public with a more attractive price for a vastly inferior product.

Microsoft did it with the Core console, once the clamour for the machine had died down, sales for the core plummeted. The same will be said of the 40Gb PS3. I am getting fed up with big corporations treating the consumers like idiots.

IMO!

well the 60gb hasn't got true backward compatibility with the ps2 either.

I think peeps have been misinformed.

Lets start with the facts:

The uk version of the 60gb PS3 only has software emulation of the the ps2. This basically means not all PS2 games work, its hit and miss thus only the ps2 games that sony have coded a patch for work on the ps3. Now that sony have gone into cost cutting, don't expect this feature to last.

The uk 40gb ps3 version doesn't have this software emulation feature.

The only models that had full backward compatibility are the US/Jap 20gb and 60gb versions. They have the ps2 chips inside and have hardware based emulation (they have the cpu and graphics chip from the ps2 inside).

So hang on, I get 20GB less hard drive (no big deal), lose 2 USB ports (no big deal), lose a card reader (no big deal) and now don't have backwards compatibility (no big deal).

The difference between the 360 Core and Premium was far greater. The Core had no wireless controller and no storage mechanism.

£260 for a PS3 + a game is good value.

Hi, first time post so go easy. If you buy the PS3 bundle at Virgin using a Virgin credit card then you get about 15% discount. I just bought the 60GB version with Fifa 08 and Heavenly Sword and an extra controller for £ 302.50. So for an extra £ 43 I am getting an extra game (with good reviews) and an extra controller which I would have bought anyway. The reason that you get such a good deal is that with a Virgin Credit card you get an automatic 10% discount but in this case they give you the discount from the total full unbundled price which is £ 475 but take it off the bundled price which is £ 350 i.e. 350 - 47.5 = £ 302.50. This was not just a fluke in my local store as I have seen a similar post somewhere else.

It will remain to be seen if the 60 GB version is better or not but when you can get it for a similar price as the 40 GB then surely it is worth it.

okay the 40gb does not play ps2 games but if you have no interest in BC then this makes a good deal - especially since it is by far cheaper than any similar spec 40gb ps3 you can buy with a UK warranty. the 40gb is also a lot quieter too.

if you don't need to play ps2 games then i actually think this is a very good deal - in some ways better than a 60gb since the machine is very quiet. if you do need to play ps2 games then it isn't a good deal.

only problem is you need to buy a plane ticket for the deal!

and the joy of carring an expensive big gadget along with you whilst your holidays :)

But even if you consider PS3 as bluray player, this is a bargain! and depreciation value is much lesser than standalone bluray player
