no i got one from argos last week and set it up a few days ago - i was thinkin the same, so set a recording and turned off ps3 and hey presto, it had turned itself on and recorded the program! its quite impressive! tho defo recommending on gettin a hard drive upgrade if you havent already - pretty cheap now tho!

ps. apologies for the GIANT and wrong-way-round photo! EDIT: sorted now!

EDIT: yeah you can play games at the same time, but I think it has issues if you're playing PS2 games (could be wrong!?)

hang on a sec....i've got two co-ax cables coming out of my sky dish that both go into my sky+ box.

so what would i plug into this? A standard terrestial co-ax from the terrestial aerial off the roof? Even then theres only one of those...

Sorry for being thick.

You'll need to plug it into a standard rooftop aerial coax lead. It wont work from a sky dish.

be carefull, the 'old style' ps3's seem to be having a few problems lately with internal motherboard problems. Sony have apparently redesigned the internal 'layou't of the new slim PS3's to counter this issue....Any new buyers, ensure you buy one of the new slim version ones......

currys and pcworld is the same company that why they are the same price.

just to highlight the above post, the ps3 havent "recently" had problems with the mobo, u've just rencently watched bbc watchdog which reported the issue with ps3. The YLOD (yellow light of death), is a known problem with the ps3 and the reason why u haven;t heard it until now is because there is a low % of ps3 having this problem. The most probable cause is excessive play time on the ps3. Also it is more common with the 60gig phat ps3, maybe due to the massive power consumption lol.

I like the way ure first post here is not even about the deal, epic fail man!

oh also it's not a known fact that sony have redesigned the ps3 to combat this problem, someone have just said this in the forum somewhere and its just another rumour flying about..

Anyways one thing i hope sony and all companies do, is to give at least a 2 years warranty for any eletrical products that cost over £150.

But anyways great find with this deal op, definately hot and worth it!

You bet it is! For £40 it's a brilliant capability to add to a PS3 that would cost significantly higher price if you were to add as a stand-alone machine to provide this facility. Got the deal listed recently on Tesco Direct at £5 more and have been extremely impressed at the HD upscaling feature it adds. Note that you will have to purchase an aerial splitter and additional aerial lead as these are not included; Sony obviously believe that the PS3 WILL become the hub of your entertainment centre!

Its not just £40. If you have a 40gb PS3 or maybe even the 80gb PS3 you need a hard drive upgrade which is £30+ for a 160gb hard drive. Playtv I have myself and it only has a single tuner so you can only record 1 channel at once, it also has no series link which is included in a decent PVR. I replaced my Playtv with a PVR that I got for £99 last year. The PVR can record 2 channels and I can also series link programs so I never miss my favourite series.

As an ex-PC World employee, I can tell you that the prices aren't always the same. They do use the same till software, but it's entirely possible for items to have different prices at different chains.

As for the PlayTV, I've got one and it's pretty damn good, especially how well it upscales. I actually though I'd miss the ability to record two channels at once, but I don't. I've got plenty of TV I haven't yet watched, even without that facility.
#33
for the record, Play TV has two recievers, as it can record a channel and watch a different one. what it doesn't have is the ability to record two - i would think that this coould eventually be updated with a different firmware? I understand there is a new one due out before xmas that incorporates series link.

No snags adgloride, but I use it on a 80GB PS3 and unless I need to record more then the Hard Drive capacity, record 2 programs at the same time (which I've never needed to do) or have a series link facility, then please find this capability for less than £40? :whistling:
#35
id rather get it from play.com as ive had trouble with currys .of stuff not turning up .
#36
You'd rather pay £59.99 online from play.com rather that go into your local Currys/PcWorld/Toysrus and purchase for £39.99, rather odd.

i cant go into local store as there 30 miles away and i dont drive .so internet buying is my way of life

That include this line -

Twin HD (720p/1080i) tuners (still awaiting HD software support)

Don't think it can support more than 1 normal freeview channe(single tuner)l let alone 2 HD ones :?

Yeah, not convinced by the HD tuner claim, but there are 2 tuners as it can record one channel and watch another.

Personally I really rate PlayTV - it's become my TV viewing method of choice for almost a year now. The best feature IMO is being able to export the recordings losslessly and back them up on a computer.

The firmware is due an update and a few months ago one of the developers was engaging with users here to see what new features should be the priority...
