Plex app 79p for Windows Phone

davidsr Avatar
2y, 4m agoFound 2 years, 4 months ago
Plex has dropped the price of their app in the Windows Phone store to 79p. I know it may be a bit more of a limited audience than for Android/Ios but it's a big discount from the usual £4.99.

If you buy it on windows phone it will also let you install it free on Windows 8 if logged in with the same account. I bought it on phone last week and it then became available on both my tablet and pc for free!

If you have windows 8, you can just install the plex windows desktop client for free anyway. It's a bit odd that it's free for one half of the OS and paid on the other.

Is VLC not available for Windows phone? if it is its got all the functionality of Plex and more, it also allows offline viewing without having to pay a subscription (Plex pass) and VLC is free.

This is a very slick way of watching anything on your computer at home anywhere you like. It automatically adds movie art, plot, biographies etc and also provides trailers for your films.

You can also install channels, but they've never been very relevant to me.

I think it's one of the first "universal" apps - i.e. you buy it once and it becomes available over phone, PC and probably in the near future Xbox One.

Tell me about it, I bought Halo Spartan Assault at full price separately on W8 and WP8, then Microsoft announced universal apps and put it on sale. Plus I bought Plex through W8 this morning for £1.49. One day I will catch a break.

Heat added, great app, great price.

Yes VLC is available, and no it doesn't do what Plex does. and no, you don't need a to pay a subscription for Plex pass. Most Nokia Lumia users got Plex for free.

Plex apps connect to a Plex server, holding your media usually (or a friends who's decided to share theirs with you) and if your PC can play the content, your Plex app will be able to view it regardless of the device it's being streamed to. But you get some additional stuffs such as automatic album art and blurb about the content among other things... but yeah, not really VLC.

You don't know what plex is do you? VLC is just a media player. Plex is a media server and this is the client to can view/watch all of you media on your phone.

This is a hot deal! I'm sure there are loads of people who accidentally bought a windows phone...

They should make an Xbox One version of Plex

Love this app. There are occasional bugs with unusual video files/codecs from torrents, but between this and MX player nearly all video files should play, and you get to watch them wherever you want when the files are on your PC. :)

I do actually, Plex server is free for all formats. VLC can connect to a Plex server for free as well as other media servers, you can also download to watch offline with VLC for free something you have to pay a monthly sub for with Plex

No but that would be a very clunky way to get locally streamed media onto your TV. Why use a mobile device to connect to a Plex server to then cast to the Chromecast connected to the TV when a Now TV Box could 'cut out the middle man'

Had bought this on win8 surface, didn't know I could get free in phone as well. When you click buy it says you already own it. Thanks.

The free windows app is not touch-compatible so the paid version is useful for tablet owners.

Cheers OP - purchased :)

You mean why use a remote control (mobile) to control the playing of your media with the added bonus of being able to play BT Sport, Wuaki, bbc iplayer etc from the same mobile device. Yeah dead clunky that lol. Not sure why you hate so much, Plex is a pro piece of kit, the mobile apps make it fantastic. A professional Netflix-like UI at a tiny cost.

Someone with no knowledge of Microsoft App stores SPAMed my Deal.

So I'll post the info here:

You have ONLY use the link above if you have a MS phone account.

Plex is also available on the MS Windows store (this is SEPERATE) from the MS Phone store and there you need to have a Win8 device to buy from here.

http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-gb/app/plex/647bfcf7-7f87-4a72-ad86-2e6274f969e3

However you can buy from EITHER and it will work with all your MS devices, as was states earlier in this thread.

This is very useful if you have WINDOWS RT, such as a SURFACE RT or SURFACE 2

Not sure why we bother trying to help out other HUKD users if information is so easily lost and deleted....

Is that like a childish exaggerated version of just saying why do you dislike it?

Not sure why you hate so much,.

Wouldnt say I hate it, I bought it on IOS when it was on offer earlier this week to see what all the fuss was about but found out I couldnt download locally without paying a monthly fee so I'll stick with VLC for the time being as this allows free local downloading for offline viewing.

Yes the interface is nice and it's ability to download metadata but I'll say it again casting to a Chromecast is clunky, far easier to buy one of the Now TV boxes for £12 with it's own remote. Far easier to use (especially for the Kids) once it's setup.

Fairy nuff, it doesnt suit you for downloading locally but your inital comment said VLC does everything Plex does and more, which it doesnt, lets not put misinformation on here.

Well to be fair casting requires extra hardare e.g a Chromecast and VLC on my iPad and iPhone can Airplay to the Apple TV anyway again with extra hardware.

Sounds like a nifty little App. So some heat. However I can't watch video on my Lumia, for any length of time, because of the small screen.

yes the link for 1.49 is wrong
