A few tips for the slightly less-computer literate people out there:

This will be compatible with 99% of Motherboards currently utilising or rated for DDR2 PC5300 or DDR2 PC4200 - it will just "downclock" itself to those lower speeds.

Download CPU-Z
(tiny download of a few KB and no installation required) to determine what kind of RAM and how much your PC currently has.

2GB is plenty of RAM for all but the most demanding tasks these days so if you're on 512MB or 1GB and your PC is getting a bit slow this is a very cheap and effective upgrade  I'd recommend just replacing what you have with these new sticks for best performance (dual-channel).

This is desktop memory and not suitable for Laptops. Play do have lots of PNY SoDIMMs suitable for laptops at similar prices.

Any previous purchasers got any idea of the CAS latency on these sticks? Cheers

PNY is not the best of ram i have loads of network and friends pc's go down with ram issues even one of my own and its usually PNY ram its just not very good. This is a very good price eventhough and it should have a good warranty. The reason i quoted you is if you are going to put this in your server if its a mission crytical or important data you have on your server i would go else where as this is not for you i wouldnt put this anywhere near my domain controller. If its for some small home unit that is not important take your chances its all about how important your data is.

Ah ok thanks.

The memory you linked to is laptop memory whereas this is desktop memory. The sticks are different sizes and incompatible. The two sets of memory are pretty much identical except for that.

Laptop memory is about 6.5 cm, or 2.5 inches long. Desktop memory is around 5 inches long, which means the connecting pins are also in different places.

Pretty good summary here

ive caved and bought the son 4x1Gb in the 2gig packs over the 2gb sticks as the 1gb sticks have heat spreaders and are of a better quality i cant belive no one caught this so the 1x2Gb sticks have no heat spreader but the 2x1Gb sticks have heat spreaders so will be better for overclocking and are much more expensive
#17
thanks, ordered, heat added :)

Did you read the user feedback/reviews? Says it doesn't come with heatspreaders and it's just in the pic.

Actually, heatsrpeeaders at this level are pretty much a gimmic used to make the RAM more visually appealing, and hopefully sell more units. RAM doesn't tend to get too hot on its own and heat is never really the limitation when overclocking RAM but rather the quality of the actual chips themslves. Having a matched pair of equallly good RAM is more important so 2x2GB sticks actually reduces the chances of a stick dragging the others down over 4x1GB. Also, the resale value of 2GB sticks will be a lot higher down the line - see how much 1GB DDR sticks still fetch, especailly around a year ago.

I thought you'd got the wrong thread there! I was like "what does the RAC have to do with Play?!" :p

Thanks for making me aware of that, I didn't know and I'm an RAC member and regular Play user!

This was the slowest deal to go hot I've posted and I thought it was one of the best :? Now it'll be on the home page but very far back.

Can I use PC6400 on a PC3200 mainboard but it will run slower. May upgrade soon but not yet and dont want to buy twice...

Once it goes hot it goes to the top of the hot list on the main page. I know because I gave it heat when it was on 54 degrees.

No PC3200 mobo needs ddr1 RAM. Play have this going pretty cheap too though.

So it does :)

I thought it was done by date posted rather than date it reached the temp threshold (60 deg?)

What's the difference between DDR and DDR2 memory?
#24
DDR has different pin arrangments so it wont physically fit into a DDR2 slot. DDR2 slot is also faster.
#25
Just ordered 2Gb, H&R added :)

Does your Dell only have 2 DIMM slots?

Yes, you could do as you say and swap one out for the other. Nothing wrong with mixing RAM.

Id be interested to know which Dell Vostro you have?

As I have a Vostro slim, which I thought was the smallest. And even that has 4 sockets. If you have looked at the online manual it shows 2 banks but each of these has two sockets. I bought 2 x 1GB crucual sticks, for £21 after Quidco.

Wasnt sure if it would be better to buy 2 x 512mb or 2x 1GB seeing as I already had 2GB in there, and 32 bit vista only supposedly recognises 3GB.

At least this option gives me better performance if I choose to run 64 bit later on.
