You can get Popcorn Hour A110 with WN100 wireless adapter (separate item use search facility on site to find it) for £230.97 delivered or £197.98 just for the popcorn hour a110 (using £10 off voucher valid til end of Feb) next stock available 14th March.

You can get 1TB Internal or external HDD for under £70 at various places now

I realise it is a little cheaper to get it direct but this a UK stockist and the best price I have seen it from one also will be a lot easier to return if something goes wrong, and no customs hassle.

I have the A-100, great piece of kit, a bit glitchy and bugs are being fixed with firmware updates all the time a 250gb HD installed, well worth it if you want to stream full hd to your tv from your hd, managed to get my hands on one when the exchange rate was 2:1, ended up paying about £90ish for it plus duty (£28) and about £50 for the external HD, so this is a good deal, hot

Great bit of kit. I have a PS3, but am reaching the end of my patience with it's media streaming limitations. Heat added.

Have you tried the PS3 Server.

It works a treat for me directly from WHS Server.

The PS3 does not support .mkv files (containers) i also have a ps3 and i was fed up with the amount of times i have tried to play an "unsupported file" i went for the popcorn hour and the ability to directly download torrents to the A-100 or A110 HD is great,

I've got an A-100 and I couldn't live without it, it's made my ps3 completely redundant.

Apart from COD4 :)

Can this thing play AVCHD format .MTS file?

If it can then I'm sold!
#14
yes it does check here: http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/index.php?pluginoption=catalog&task=info&item_id=6

has trouble with some files which have higher than L4.1 encoding.

Try MK2VOB. A 1.5gb file takes about 3 minutes on the most basic of computers.
#16
The title say's and 1TB HDD for under £230.97 but then states the hard drive can be got for under £70 which I make a total of over £300 or am I doing something wrong???
#17
I'm sorry, but those who are saying it makes their PS3 redundant are doing something wrong.

If you have an mkv, convert it with mkv2vob. DTS now supported via file playback as well as AVCHD disc/usb structure. If it's not 4.1 profile then it transcodes it.

Good price, but i have no need for one as i have a PS3.

That was what I was thinking

Same for the wireless adapter

The point being made is that the Popcorn hours plays these formats without having to transcode them. It also accepts a 3.5" SATA drive (internally, as well as supporting external USB drives like the PS3) and can be used as a NAS drive.

This is quite a bit more money than the Western Digital HD TV thing what benefits are you getting?

So far I see networking capability and internal storage. But otherwise.. what is the other £120 going on?

Oh and title is wrong ;-)

It does support DTS, and the A110 has an optical out rather than just the Co-Ax found on the A100.

Them things are well overpriced

I have an old usb hd that has the identical shell to that

so much for r&d

this thing must cost them all of £10 to make

300mhz mips cpu lightning lol

i have the 110a and it plays anything i have a 500gb samsung f1 drive in it and 2tb on my main PC and no matter if the hd media is local of over the network 1080p play perfect as for the wireless dongle don't expect full hd to play well the bit rates to high and a wired network connection is what you need.

It has built in NAS torrent downloader and Usenet access and plays media from the net such as YouTube and veoh to use some of the said features a HDD must be installed and there are loads of other little programmes and scripts you can find that make it do other stuff as it has such a big following. You cant class the ps3 in the same league as this the PCH110a its brilliant but expensive but it does play any format you throw at it the downside is its not something someone who is not good with pc's should buy as to get some of the functions working is quite involved and complex.

You shouldn't have bothered posting this on HUKD as its lost on most of the people on the thread if they are comparing this to offerings like the western digital and external HDD they don't have a clue that's like comparing a ford focus to a Ferrari F50 before making stupid comments about it do your reading these are the best media streaming device there is and are from the states and stock sells out as soon as they get it and they sell for £230 just for the unit.

I shall be watching Hellboy in a minute at 1080p with no problems the PCH even has usb ports that allow you to plug in a usb cd/dvd does your WD tat allow that and i know for a fact that the WD wouldn't play the HD formats this does and i also know that the popcorn hour as won loads of awards for how good it is.

Also notice its not due in stock yst thats because they are like rocking hourse ***** and anyone who knows anything about media streaming wants one.
#25
Your far better off getting a ps3 it uses the divx sdk and 7.0 does mkv
so at some point so will the ps3

as noted by the added support of divx 3.11 to the sdk that the ps3 now supports

The a100 will only play DTS through a decoder, if you want to play DTS through standard stereo speakers such as a TV, you need the a110.

Watched Transformers in 1080p format last night on my WD TV Media Player - no problems at all. In fact it has played everything I have thrown at it .
It cost me £79.99 - nice piece of 'tat' for the money...

But this is much smaller, quieter and far more attractive than a PS3 - If you ain't worried about looks or noise then get an old Xbox, softmod it and put XBMC on.

What are you using to stream ? TVersity is the one I use.

No the ps3 doesn't support mkv, but you can convert using mkv2vob, but it can take a while and has to be split into 4 gig chunks to enable the fat32 reading ps3 to play it.

Somebody changed the heading (not me) the original heading said wireless popcorn hour set-up for under £300 from a UK supplier and then listed the 3 items that made it this price, popcorn A110 wireless adapter and a caviar green 1tb internal HDD, I could only link to 1 tem as it is not being sold as a package so I linked to the A110 with the main price showing £230. But the point is I wanted to show this set up was achievable from a UK supplier for under £300 now, without the hassles of importing one and it should be easier to return if problems arise, and although it is still available they have expired it.

thanks for the help but by waiting on an answer to my question so long that its now expired !:x
#32
You don't need to split any file if you're streaming, there is not FAT32 limit unless you're using an external device such as a USB stick or a HDD.

My point was, it was said "this makes my ps3 redundant", if you've got a PS3 then in my mind there is no need to buy this as well, as the PS3 can do what this can, albeit in a roundabout way, plus of course the PS3 offers all the other things that this doesn't.
#33
Can we play the shows and videos bought in iTunes with this?

I nearly bought a PCH recently as two friends recommended and then I saw an ad for the WD one and have basically been stuck trying to decide between the two ever since !

They both play any format you can throw at it (afaik) but the PCH can be connected to the network, however not sure if my wireless pre-N network would be good/strong enough in the location I would need to put the device (under the TV with the other kit)

PCH also does downloading but I have a NAS that does that already which does mean having a network one would be better....

ah the decisions!!!

Erm, you obviously aren't aware that the WD player uses exactly the same internals as the Popcorn Hour :) The only things it's missing are the Internal Storage support and the Networking - hence the cheaper price.

...If you ain't worried about looks or noise then get an old Xbox, softmod it and put XBMC on.

The old XBox can't cope with HD content.
#37
Also support for HD Audio which is excellent, user apps such as juke boxes and other apps such as Youtube which can make a a lo of differences. Depends what you use it for.
Also no point comparing it to a PS3, both are media players but the config options PCH make it much more.
Not everyone wants to convert from MKV ;)
#38
Does the WD TV support DTS-playback, I can't see it listed in it's specifications...
#39
Not sure, if it does. I don't think it could handle DTS decoding.
#40
And allied with something like gbpvr on a PC it makes a wonderous PVR.
I can record all Freeview channels, a Sky channel and two Freesat channels (inc HD) simultaneously. A 14 day EPG and all front ended on a diskless A100.
