pogoplug now £14.97 instore @ currys, cheapest nas/cloud device?

eternaldeternald

Hi seen this in my local currys (Ballymena) but asked a friend of mine to check it out at his store in belfast. He bought the last one but may be available at other stores as I was assured it was nationwide to clear. Possibly one of the easiest set-up nas on the market as its plug and play for the basic features. For those of you who don't know, this allows you to plug in a usb hard/pen drive and access any of the files on the drive anywhere in the world with internet access (tablet, phone, laptop etc).

If however you're feeling a little more adventurous you could realise this devices full potential by installing archlinux and have it set up as a fully featured linux webserver. Excellent value for under £15 and low running costs due to the arm processor! I've included some interesting links below if anyone would like to give it a go. Hope this helps some one : )

So you could use with a 500gb hard drive, and access via a smart phone? Nice idea, never heard of it

The reviews tend to go either way with this. Out of the box its really easy to setup, under a minute, but it is basic and might I add usable, especially if you have a fast broadband connection. But it does have great potential though and for the sake of a few hours could save a good bit of money and work as a great server intro for people.

If you have the skills, put Linux on it and you have a very nice, low-power server.

If they have some instore, worth taking it to the till and getting the price checked. A similar pogo-enabled device was stickered up at £39.99 in my store, got to the till it was £19.18.

I've found the pogo service to be somewhat variable. It's a great idea, and when it works it's spot on. It's just not 100% reliable, and a lot of fixes have to be done on Pogo's servers - the end user has no control when things do go wrong. Although always good to whack a copy of Arch Linux ARM on it!

Model is Pogoplug E02-UK. Bought the last one in Sheffield from Meadowhall Retail Park, next nearest was in Alfreton. Mine was pink, hmph! The nice woman in Chesterfield Road Currys checked for me and there was also a wireless Pogoplug device listed on their system at just short of £20 but that was out of stock.

Picked up two today - website for people who want to experiment is http://archlinuxarm.org/ as that contains info on installing linux and the extra packages e.g bit torrent. I just saw the link in the description but it is worth visiting the base site as here is a lot of useful information there.

The Seagate goflex is also on sale for 19.18 and can likewise be hacked

Got one of these. Great product (got cheap from ebay). Can be a bit slow, but it works fine from all PCs, Android and sheep Phones.

If you leave your computer on all the time anyway, then you can just make an ftp server

If you want one buy it now as (although I'm sure they will sell out at this price) they are getting recalled back to Currys main stock distribution centre by the 27th and will probably end up on eBay after that.

    No heat here!

Bogus listing I'd say. The standard Currys site doesnt even list this as a product!
