If only it was a bit lighter...personally I'd go for the Tamron 150-600. It's lighter and has more reach.
Thanks Sureshot you have put my mind at ease :)

Is this website legitimate?

The reviews seem to say so on feefo and trustpilot so i paid using credit card when i called them so please dont put doubts in my head lol

To honest you'll be fine. Besides being protected on your credit card, I checked out some reviews and forum experiences and people generally seem happy. I bought a camera last year from Panamoz, after checking reviews out. I emailed them in the early hours of Monday morning, the week of Good Friday, and got them to price match some items on a few items from other sites. While "risky", I did a bank transfer to get a further 5% discount, and ordered Monday afternoon. I needed the camera by Thursday and I got it delivered by UPS on Wednesday afternoon! I didn't have to pay any extras.
While tempted by this offer. I don't really have money, but it is a great deal. :)

I purchased from here last Thursday and it was with me Monday. camera is perfect the charger is an america plug but there's an adapter inc. actually helps me as I visit the states a lot so means less to carry. I believe the warranty is through them but hopefully I won't need it so shouldn't be a problem.

I have to say its a great deal its over £100 more at Curry's.

point being I would recommend the company.
Hah...picture looks like a tie-fighter from star wars!?!...

anyone bought from this site? very interested in this deal, sounds to me like grey imports aren't a big worry, thanks
rich_1986
I have the D5200, fantastic piece of kit, and the extra features and upgrades on this make it even better. Mine is a grey import, and the camera is fully registered with Nikon's UK warranty system and has serial numbers to register for UK insurance cover (should you want to cover it, I did).

I am the exact same, and have had no issues. Great camera
kkthomask
this one or Sony A6000?(I am aware they are more expensive)

Depends what you want to do with it. They are both good. If you care somewhat about video, get the A6000. If you don't, well, the Nikon is fine.

I would also suggest the Panasonic G7, which is available for £319 after cashback on Wilkinson Cameras. That's probably better than these two as it's essentially a budget GH4, which is an excellent, excellent camera.

It's £889 at currys.co.uk + 1.05% Topcashback.

The good thing with Apple is that their warranty for laptops is worldwide. If you want to go down the grey import route, cheapest place to pick up Apple gear is Hong Kong (same plug as the UK). Prices can be up to 20-25% cheaper.
It points to being a grey import because the model number should be MF839B/A but they've just said MF839 and left the UK specific part out. Sneaky.
colin10086
grey import I assume. Make sure it has a UK keyboard and UK power cord.
Taxes and the Price You Pay
The total on your invoice includes applicable taxes & charges. By making a purchase on our website you are acting as the importer of the product and agree to Portus Digital making all delivery arrangements to your door, including customs clearance into the UK or other EU countries.

Thanks for pointing that out. Was thinking of ordering a camera body and missed that. I must admit I only checked that they had a UK address before looking into it further and comparing with others

On a side note on cashback, does anyone know why the camera on argos doesnt come with cashback? http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1914308.htm does this mean it is not a UK import? sadly having to look at paying this up on an argos card so trying to make it a half good deal, phoned the help line but no help!
it is possibly fine for cashback but i am not guaranteeing anything!

why contact? could look at their site?

"And your products?
Naturally we also introduce new lines and remove old lines as they become obsolete. Our products are imported from various sources around the world. When you buy a product on our site you recognise that Portus Digital is sourcing the product on your behalf and making it available for you to import directly from the country of origin."

...but do let us know when you contact portus to confirm UK stock eh?

Every shop who sells uk stock advertises Nikon cashback at same time - portus not. Like rodman alredy mentioned - places who sells uk stock are listed at camerapricebuster.
If you have a problems with understanding few simple facts - change place for posting stupid comments. Don't try to defend your post at all costs, because you look ridiculous...

You're all operating on the assumption that Portus sells this as imported, who amongst you have called them to check this?
It makes me laugh, on the one hand you're all belly aching the deal on the incorrect basis that this is an imported model but at the same time saying there's a better deal via a website that sells imported models from abroad!
Gotta love 'professional' hotukdeals users. It's not a competition, relax.
It makes me laugh when people makes such comments without basic knowledge about the market ... who sells uk-stock and who grey import. You didn't check that first but trying to teach others... sad

Does it really matter that these are imported?
I got mine ok, don't see what the problem is & they've been around for ages according to at least 1 other forum member
I was almost convinced to buy it because of the price. But then I read a couple of forum threads about this company and... I'll go for something else. Even their address is fake. I won 't risk

If you are not in a hurry to get a camera and you are happy with grey imports - my advice is to keep an eye on Rakuten and Pixelelectronics. Last week they had the D5200 for approximately the same price and you got £70 of Rakuten points (there was a 25x points offer) with it....
How does their repair / returns service work ?

I think it's more down to personal preference, there pros & cons for most of the top brands
Partly true, especially between nikon and canon but sparkle hedgehog is right. The a6000 blows this out of the water in everyway. It depends what you use it for as well. I would never use this for pro video but use the a6000 quite a lot.
So one for video & one for pics. That's a lotta dosh & carrying around.

I would still use the a6000 for pics over any canon APSC..
For video I actually use a diff camera surly anyway.

18-135mm is really good for everyday usage :) 70d over 760D
I was looking into the Sigma 18-35mm f 1.8 lense. I'm looking to make short videos but have little experience in knowing what lense's would be ideal for this. do you have any advice?
The sigma is the perfect video lens, very sharp. And great as a stills as well. You won't get the best video out of this camera though.
Why isn't it good for video? I've been waiting for the 70d to fall down in price and was just about to buy until I saw ur comment. Lol.
What's the problem with video?
Sorry:/ the h264 codec is pretty rubbish amongst many other things. The sony a6000 beats this by miles on video and has histogram etc which helps a lot. Also check out the Panasonic gh2 or if you want it soley for video the black magic pocket.
As much as canon were at the forefront a few years ago they have only made minor improvements since. There isn't a huge difference in the vid quality of this an a 550d for example.

The Sony a6000 blows this canon out of the water but unfortunately people mentality still dictates that there are only two brands to consider when buying a new camera.

Did you (or anyone else) post the Curry's deal a few weeks ago? I didn't see it?
Not me, but there were a few deals listed as it was a code that applied to all canon lenses. This was the one for this lens.

Nah, you can buy greys cheaper if you look around... Portus digital give a UK postcode and address, but look on Google maps and it seems to be the NFU Mutual premises... Makes me suspicious :|
Where`s cheaper
Google is your friend... X) - Even a quick scan on Fleabay brings in one from Korea for £1429 inc p&p
Taken from Portus digital faq section:When you buy a product on our site you recognise that Portus Digital is sourcing the product on your behalf and making it available for you to import directly from the country of origin.
Didn't think so
I don't give my money to any company I find on google like simply electronics
Take your blinkers off for a minute...
You didn't specify a company you know/like...
There are loads of companies selling grey imports to the UK - I just told you about one on eBay - There are several more on eBay, all cheaper than yours, and more found on Google...
As an aside, I have also used Simply Electronics (twice for goods costing ~£3000) with no problems at all...
Panamoz have bad reviews too you know...
You said you knew cheaper companies
You would use eBay to save £50 or £60 when you could have a 3 year warranty , I wouldn't
Nit blinkered just my preference

Hah, so you'd pay £50 - £60 more for a 3 yr warranty (using independent repairers, not Canon BTW)
You can buy a 3rd party warranty for less than that...
It's your money though...

Not such a great saving (£30)for a grey import with no manufacturers` warranty , less resale price, not voted
No one would know the difference if you sold a grey import most of the time they are the same camera unless you are getting from the states some canon will say rebel instead of 550d etc but if you get a Japan import where most of the imports come from they come from the same place they just come through via different import channels. HDEW cameras, digital rev, one stop etc are great importers that I know of with great warranty service if needed in fact sometimes better warranty than you get with a UK based camera.

They would know the difference in my listings , if I buy from UK I always mention it as it pushes price up selling with a receipt in my opinion
Yes realise they are same camera , bought my 6d from hdew a couple of months ago, for a good saving .
Wouldn't personally bother for this saving though
pavel76
Irrelevant comment - we talking about warranty, what have credit card or PayPal common with warranty ?

I worked last night, am tired and now trying to work out if you're being serious or just lacking in observational power.

If within a year it breaks or has a defect and the company either refuses to honor the warranty or goes bust then you can claim against your CC under s.75 of the Consumer Credit act and either get it fixed for free or get a complete refund.

Edit: If you pay with PayPal then you lose those rights as they are acting as your agent and incidentally isn't it funny how they don't mention this in any of their adverts?

Full frame cameras are relatively cheap nowadays and this is a great lens, the difference is image quality between this and the 1.2L is definitely not worth the extra £900+.

It depends what kind of photos you take. It's not a general purpuse lens as it use to be with 35mm.

Depends what camera you mount it on :p
If you can afford a full frame camera, you probably wouldn't buy this lens :)

How so? I think the 50mm focal length works best on a FF body, and it's a good compromise between not being too plasticky (1.8), and not hideously expensive (1.2L). Of course, there are some very good Sigma 1.4 alternatives, but they're generally not as cheap as this still.

You've got to remember, if you're using this on a crop sensor, which most people do, it's actually a nifty-80 rather than a nifty-fifty.
SaltyCDogg

however don't expect stellar build quality. it's just as plasticky as the 1.8

That's not fair. It's not got amazing build quality at all, but it's at least got a metal mount and will take a knock or two without falling to bits.

I'd agree that the build quality feels better on this lens (for a start, having an actual focus ring to grip rather than terrible plastic front ridge (a la 50mm f/1.8) is a definite plus.

However, I'd be wary of knocking it (due to the front element). I'd perhaps go so far as to say I'd expect my f/1.8 to come off better from small-medium knocks!

Would rather pay about £50 extra for the 70-300 tamron deal that was posted the other day. It beats this lens in tests.
Can't see how they can justify £19.99 for postage, it's just price manipulation on search engines. I wouldn't buy from them because of that alone. IMHO of course
Cheaper (delivered) on Amazon etc: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-AF-S-NIKKOR-55-300mm-4-5-5-6G/dp/B003ZSHNCC

This thread makes for interesting reading. Note that, as corrected in a later post in that thread, the parent company is spelt 'Validhirst' rather than 'Validhurst'.

I note that hdew and Portus Digital's price is almost exactly 20% lower than Digital Rev's price of £389.

go for the 18-300-amazing all in one lens!
If you were to get one lens for this camera which would it be...I know that, with the best will in the world, I just couldn't be bothered to lug a bag around with me to keep changing lenses.
good find, can't buy thoun im skint until 2099.

Great price for a great camera if you have lenses already. Yes, likely a grey import, but they have a good reputation - Google Portusdigital reviews.

My mate used portus and they took his order over the phone saying the D7300 was in stock and when he chased it up a week later it was out of stock. Good and bad experiences.
I've used these guys. They are pukka!
...Grey import......moan whinge, grumble.....yes, we know...go away THAT'S WHY IT'S CHEAPER! :)
I was tempted to buy their Nikon D5300 that was posted a couple of weeks ago. I got all the way to their checkout and pressed pay with my Maestro Card (site says you can pay this way). For some reason it did not go through. I rang Portus who tried to get me to pay by bank transfer. I didn't feel comfortable so thought I'd wait.
Not a thing wrong with this company. Used them to buy a 5d mkiii off them last year. Speedy delivery and camera has been fantastic this wedding season. Yes they are imported, but they supply a 2 year warranty and saves me easily £500.

I've used Portus digital too, found them excellent, good communication and delivery when they said (1 week)
Just want to say that I received camera, fast delivery and good communication :-)
I purchased a D7100 with a 18-140 VR lens for around £500 less than I'd have paid buying it officially here. Yes, my lens came a week later too, but overall a small inconvenience given the huge saving over list. Very pleased with the deal and, no, as it says on the website, all stock is despatched from them in the UK so there's no risk of you being clobbered with VAT etc.

The way I decided in the end (and risk it) was that it was little different to me going on holiday to the far east or the US on holiday, seeing the item in a shop at the vastly reduced price (compared to the UK) and buying it. That, and the safety net of purchasing it on a credit card, with all the consumer protection that that gives you made it a no-brainer for me. And finally, for me, the fact that I've bought several Nikon camaras, lens, flashguns over the years and I've never had any faults on them....now Canon is a different thing!! Don't get me onto the subject of expensive L lenses with back-focusing issues from new!!
I think that's the old kit lens, I could be wrong...
Well worth a punt at this price I think, though I could imagine some similar prices on UK stock around this Christmas.
I picked a 5200 kit up last Christmas @ £349.

Great price for a really good camera, a worthwhile upgrade to the D5200.

I have just purchased the same camera from portus and they delivered within a week of ordering, the only problem was there should have been a 18-140mm lens included as it was a Nikon bundle but the lens was not in the box. I had to wait a week for the lens to arrive. Without a doubt the prices are great but splitting a package like that is not good.

PS

This is an amazing camera with some great features, i can connect my smartphone via wifi and see what the camera see;s on my phone.
Did you pay costume duty, vat, or any additional charges?

No customs duties or any additional payments at all.

Would not buy from Portus. They are grey imports, and there's nothing wrong with that. But when questioned about it via email they blatantly lie (with bad grammar) in saying their stock aren't grey imports. Stick to DigitalRev or HDEW.
A mate ordered a Nikon D7100 from Portus last week-ordered over the phone and needed it within the week as going back averseas. 'Yes we definitely have stock and will ship today'. 3 days later nothing arrived. Called Portus back 'no sorry it isn't actually in stock'. Refunded and not happy
goodgrr if I remember correctly Portus Digital offer an additional years warranty together with the manufacturers warranty where the camera is repaired in the UK rather than being shipped abroad, as long as you have your original invoice.

Thanks for the advice notoriousdp, wish I'd followed this when recently online shopping while drunk but Portus Digital in my experience have always soaked up these costs themselves.
I know some people have mentioned concern about this retailer being a gray importer before - therefore I'm sure different people may have had different experiences when dealing with paying import, so here's my advice:

I bought a camera off of eBay which had similar prices to this retailer - the way I made sure I would not get hit with extra charges was that when searching for the camera I made sure that the item was already located in the Uk on the search filter. After that you're guaranteed not to have any nonsense. Also it meant it came within 2 days!
Really great price, as said seems to be a fair price reduction for the import.

Who is providing the guarantee?

That's fine, but they didn't have to open the box and repackage it using their feet.

Unfortunately my camera came unsealed. It's clearly been opened / returned or whatever. Wouldn't suit as a present at all.
Anyone else the same?

As it is clearly stated, they are imports, intended for other foreign markets... so every one will have had the box opened, to replace the foreign power adapter plug with a UK one, and possibly to swap a foreign language manual to English.

hmmm, if it does not say VR2 on the lens then I think you have been duped. Are ytou able to compare it to a V1? After speaking to them with reguards to exactly this, I have my doubts... but will be extremely happy to be wrong! Will buy this today if you can confirm.

Thanks

Each to his own; I'm not about to upload pictures of the lens as evidence, but I'm not someone who gets duped! The VR II lens does not have VR II written on it. The clear difference is that the VR II has a button on the barrel, with an 'L' position. You push the button, and rotate the zoom ring to the 'L', to shorten the lens when it's not in use.

That is the version of Lens I have in front of me, and I paid Portus £255 for it, using the deal linked above. The original VR lens is larger overall, and does not have the function to retract to the 'L' position. Portus perhaps have a mistake on their stock control system (which is what the member of staff would refer to). It is an import...intended for the Australian market, with a UK plug adapter added.

Hope that helps. The 24 Mega pixel sensor with no noise is superb, by the way. It removes the need for a telephoto lens (for most people), as you can crop even just a 1/4 of the full size image, and still get 6 Mega pixel quality.

Wow thanks for the info my box does say VR II just checked the lens and is same as yours. Great buy then is a Christmas present, so i don't know much about cameras. Reading that this is a great beginner camera is what pushed me to buy so thanks OP. If you look at the front of the lens it does say VRII on it also.
