If you're unsure how to, I made a rather crude looking guide for another member, it might help?

Err, Short answer=Yes.

What resolution do you game at and what sort of games do you play?
If you are playing Bioshock, Crysis et all Buy one. If you are playing minesweeper and browsing the web, does your current card cope with all you use it for?

:oops:What is the PSU requirement for this please. Somehow I doubt my 375w is sufficient:oops::whistling:

375W is a little tight.

It really depends who makes your psu and how truthful they were about what wattage your psu can handle
#15
What kind of performance increase would this be from a 3870XT 512mb? The price of the 3870XT is only a few pound cheaper than the 4850. I haven't seen any benchmark comparisons yet, worth an upgrade?

It depends on the quality of your power supply and what components you have in your system. There’s a good chance that it will work as I’ve seen reviews showing a HD 4850 system consuming 211W at load – Anandtech.

It's a standard 2 year old Dell Dimension 9150.

From what I've read there is quite a difference with the 4850 being better...

Massive. Search the net for reviews of the HD 4850, there's plenty about.
BTW I own A Sapphire HD4850..........it's a great card, thinking about getting this to finish my xfire setup.
#20
The only real problem I've read about with this card is the heat it generates. So although your PSU might be fine for handling the power needs, you might think about getting a better one just to keep the temperature in the case down anyway?

who on earth would vote this cold!!!

People who think an 8600gt is high end.....
#22
The heat problem has been solved with the latest drivers. The fan now runs at a slightly higher speed but the heat has now dramatically been reduced to around 50 at idle and high 70s at full load.

Any idea what kind of effect did that have on the excellently quiet running speeds?

for the price its an unbelievably good card. Cant believe i shelled out on an 8800gt 2 weeks before its release when i could have spent the same amount of money on a great performer. Now I got a 4870 and my bro a 4850, and i have to say it pwns all games out there. Forget about crysis though, it does play, but that game... i dont know how it can be salvaged :D

#27

Not that I know of, the current 8.7 drivers don't change the speed at all. However it can be manually changed by editing the xml file that controls the profile (like clock speeds etc). But this doesn't need the latest drivers.

If by drivers you mean bios (which require you to flash the card "at your own risk"), then some of the makes have been updated or released updated bios' but not all of them have, although you should be able to use one bios for all/most of them.
