Mark Wahlberg stars in this inspirational docudrama that explores the remarkable rise of Massachusetts-born, junior welterweight title winner 'Irish' Micky Ward. A determined pugilist whose career in the ring was shepherded by his loyal half-brother, Dicky (Christian Bale) -- a hard-living boxer-turned-trainer whose own career in the ring was nearly sent down for the count due to drugs and crime -- perennial underdog Irish Micky rebounded from a disheartening series of defeats to win both the WBU Intercontinental Lightweight title and the WBU Light Welterweight title thanks to a fierce combination of determination and hard work. David O. Russell (Three Kings) directs from a script by 8 Mile's Scott Silver and Paul Attanasio (The Bourne Ultimatum).

Release date: June 20 2011

If anyone is interested you should see this documentary from HBO High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell .

Shows Micky Wards brother Dicky, very sad, but worth watching.

best film ive seen for a while

Superb film, Christian Bale is excellent in this.

For a film about fighting there sure wasn't much fighting going on. Just a film about a bickering Irish family living in America. The only good thing was Christian Bale's acting of Dicky, apart from that, terrible, save your money.

Great film, thought it was the best film of the awards season, Bale is phenomenal definitely his best work so far, which says alot imo! As for the complaints about not enough fighting don't take the title for its most obvious meaning & look at how Micky struggles through the film against him family.

Watched this at the cinema. Was expecting better based on the imdb score/reviews online. About 30 minutes too long and probably something most would only watch once. May have been because I was knackered that day though...

As long as you take this film as a drama and not an action punch up film, it's kinda good. Some funny bits in there too. I liked it

just watched today. Honestly do not know what all the hype is about. The only thing this movie has going for it is that its based on true events. Even then the story isnt all that. Big let down.

First film I've seen in ages where I was actually felt bothered about the characters - Micky get away from your family. Although it was a bit like watching a family from Jeremy Kyle show
