#5

I just bought two of these about a month ago from Misco (who are about 20 miles from me) and they were about 17 quid each.

They are very good drives and were the replacement from LG for the drive that was already the A list holder in PC pro.

Its worth mentioning - although may not be the case - that the drives come with a set of silver and beige bezels in addition to the black they are assembled with - but I had to call Misco to open the box to confirm this. So these parts may be included with the Play offering too.

why do you need 20x dvd writer when we can't see any 20x dvd's to write!!!
#11
Because the burners are capable of burning the disk at a higher speed than rated! !!!
#12
Just ordered mine for £12.82.
Voted hot.
Thanks bingsy and everyone else who makes hotukdeals so great.

I got a 20x Samsung for around this price months ago and my samsung was sata, does not seem anything special to me. and isnt securedisc something most people want to avoid? it is only made for people like record companys to make it harder for people to rip their music onto an mp3 player.

SecurDisk is a disk recovery solution, not a DRM thingy iirc.

Sorry if this sounds stupid but is LG GSA-H55NBAL 20x Internal DVDRW IDE/PATA Black Bare Drive @ £13.49 the same one as LG 20x GSA-H55LBRL / DVDRW / Internal IDE Lightscribe Drive @ £17.99 only that comes with software/drivers and 3 bezels?

I'm only asking cos my bro needs his dvd writer changed asap and this sounds good.
#20
Sorry, Just querying something. Is it true that if you replace parts of your PC from PC world then too many changed can mess up the OEM windows code?? I've changed the memory and graphics card on mine already...eeek. Wouldnt mind adding this though!

Yes, although it's generally only triggered by major things like a new motherboard. I've never actually seen it happen, though.

If it does, you just need to re-activate.
#23
Its A Bare drive as stated on play website ie. OEM not Retail so u will get what it states on the website a black drive. Still good price! Burn!

Fair enough, I'll give it a go. Will try and research it further. Not now though, longgggg day!

Wrong. Very much a DRM thingy to prevent access and ripping.

No, very much a proprietary encryption system with additional parity and integrity checks. It prevents *other people* from reading *your* data. By 'other people' I mean anyone without nero's software, including your future self and anyone not using windows, natch. And by 'prevent', I mean 'annoy until they download software to convert it to a normal disc'.

do not buy this ****. securedisk is a technology designed to limit your freedoms. this is not a feature and these morons here who with their sockpuppet accounts are trying to act as if it is are obviously making a profit.

think about it for a minute before you buy... securedisk encrypts data which can only be decrypted with securedisk drives. isn't that very limiting considering that you can use software such as truecrypt to do the same and using your password, decrypt in any drive? Why would you want to buy another drive to decrypt in your destination location? The reason why LG is selling this evil hardware is to bargain with media companies and sell their technology.

Hotukdeals is being overrun with these moralless hawks. Shame on you. You guys are selling the freedoms of your children. Loosers.

Steady on mate...you'll have a heart attack!!

Have to agree partially though....its not exactly a 'feature' is it? It just seems like something designed to protect other companies

That is not true. You can decrypt the data on any drive if you have InCD Reader 5. The only thing you can't view are the copy protected PDFs. Doesn't seem too limiting to me.

However, I'm guessing that most people won't be buying this drive for that feature alone, it's just an added bonus.
#34
Do you have to use securedisk or can you bypass it to prevent future problems?
#35
does this have lightscribe?

i'm looking for a new dvd writer, for £13 you can't really complain
#36
Can you disable SecurDisk on this?

From the review it seems you can turn this feature on/off

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/index.cfm?ReviewID=1001
With all of the SecurDisc settings turned to on, we found that the LG GSA-H55N took almost double the time to burn 3GB to a disc – although the more you burn to disc at one time, the smaller this gap should become
It helps that, even when used as a normal DVD writer, the LG GSA-H55N is exceptional. Its 20-speed DVD-R/+R facilities are exceptional, and when you combine these with 12-speed DVD-RAM and 10-speed DVD-RW/+RW, this is clearly a fantastic product
Verdict
You're in effect paying a £5 premium for the security features on the LG GSA-H55N, but even if you never use any of the SecurDisc facilities, this remains a very impressive model. As a means of securing your privacy and keeping tabs on the quality of your DVD media, SecurDisc is extremely good indeed. And you'll only need it to work its magic once, and you could well find that extra cost proving priceless

Good price for this 20x writer, I can't find it as cheap anywhere else. Just ordered one with the 5% Play discount voucher £12.82 plus 4% Quidco if it goes through.

Voted hot. Why some people are insistent on SATA DVD drives I don't know.

Better cooling from a slimmer cable perhaps? Hot swapping functionality(who hot swaps DVD drives?)

Perhaps people think it will be faster if it is sata? It won't be, the IDE bus FAR outstretches anything a DVD Writer can read or write at.

...and securdisc is a feature that you can use, or not. You might as well have it than not - it's not there at the expense of something else.
