wish I had one of these when i spilt wine on my ds. now mine looks like an extra out of a horror movie!

pre order price dropping because hardly anyone is pre ordering. Probably because they have overpriced this console. Still at least £40 too expensive for what you get. A dressed up 5 year old hand held console.
#3
DSi was doing nothing for me but THIS in dark brown?!!!!! does that mean i'm getting old? LOL
#4
This is a pisstake. Im glad and I dont blame the consumer for giving this a miss. Im happy with my DSi and I wouldnt purchase another nintendo handheld until the next gen DS2 is out.
#5
Can this use the same games for DSi and DS ?
Thanks.

"The DSi XL is not just for old people" Nintendo claim! ( yeah right thats why they picked such trendy colours!)

Here is an article I found with Nintendo defending the XL, seems Nintendo think one of the reasons all ages will want it is the stylus is bigger so its harder to lose down the back of the sofa, now that is a real selling point!
http://kotaku.com/5450751/nintendo-claims-dsi-xl-not-only-for-old-people

In its defence I have to say I would love the bigger screens but another massive fail by nintendo, the screen resolution is the same as the original so it will look pixel filled!

As for the OP deal, cheapest about so I guess its hot!

These won't sell well until R4 et al work out a compatible card.
#8
I still have and prefer my original DS, Lite was no improvement, DSi just silly and this one is for who?

Not voted but please don't but it, hopefully this will get the DSLite's down a bit in price.
#9
the nintendo ds is no longer portable. who wud honestly want to carry this beast around? its bigger than the psp 1000 for crying out loud!
#10
Jesus, how many times are they going to release the same damn console !? =/

well everyone has their own taste, lol! I like the retro look of the original ds, the screens are not bright enough and its too bulky though imo, the ds lite was a massive improvment, cosmetically and how it felt to play on, plus brighter screens!!

I Also think the DSi was another nice upgrade, bigger screens and brighter still, better speakers, cameras and software, SD card, the menu screen is a much better set up, more user friendly, the dsi ware titles, sound recorder, some nice new features!

However this is hardly an upgrade in anyway, bigger screens with the same res so the games will look worse, its like rick moranis got his crazy invention out ...........

"Honey I blew up the DSi, a little bit" lol

I am looking to buy for my 4 year old (who has never owned a DS before) and wanted to know why I should rather buy the older models apart from smaller screens and cheaper prices - seems this model looks good and is better - a bit bigger maybe but overall nicer.

Does anyone know whether the new one plays all old DS and DSi games .. great if it does.
:?

Yeh it will work with all DS and DSi games

The R4i DOES work on the DSi XL

Yes I agree R4i does work on DSi XL as does any card working on 1.4u which is the firmware shipped with DSi XL.

I use EZFlash Vi on dsi.

Ordered mine from Japan the day it came out, got it in white as the other colours are nasty - wine red & brown tat - no thanks! The only problem is the menu is all in Japanese so bit of a struggle to navigate.

OK, the R4i does work as long as its the one with 1.4 firmware compatiblity on the box AND the screen believe it or not is a huge improvement over the original. Japan are on 1.5 firmware and it is rumoured the R4i (1.4 version) will not work so dont upgrade! Unfortunately, it is also rumoured the UK release will have the 1.5 FW on them. The graphics are no way pixelated so stop assuming the games will be without having seen it and as for portablity, its still portable but not pocket size obviously.

Overall the best Nintendo console is the DS as it is the last of the region free machines, DSi and the DS Fatty edition have introduced this region control feature which is absolute BS. I've travelled all over the world and picked up games cheaper in the US & Far East and played them no problems. Upgraded to DSi and lo & behold couldnt play some of the latest games on it and found the same issue on the DS XL

Wow region coding on a handheld, never heard of that before. What a stupid idea.

100% agreed. Wii is the most grabage machine ever invented. They've completely turned their back on hardcore gamers and gamers in general that got them where they are today. This machine is for the Rainman type of individual and anyone who disagrees should be ashamed of themselves period.

BUT this is about the DS XL which is a good little machine ONLY if you get a card like R4i as they get the most use out of the machine. Watching movies on this size screen is real cool.

Overall, the deal is too early to call it HOT as I'm sure when it comes out there will be some good prices around.

Got to give credit to Nintendo for their bizarre wisdom :

2001 - Gameboy Advance (Flawed Not Backlit)
2003 - Gameboy Advance SP (Redesign in a clamshell Backlit)
2005 - Gameboy Micro (Drop the Gameboy Color compatibility, smaller screen, portability ploy)

2005 - Nintendo DS (Flawed poor backlighting)
2006 - Nintendo DS Lite (Redesign, improved backlighting)
2009 - Nintendo DSi (Drop the GBA compatibility, enhanced features)
2010 - Nintendo DSi XL (Larger Screen, lack of portability, for people that like to play at home on larger screens ploy!)

What is the point in a bigger heavier DS?? i like mine because it fits in my handbag no problem and doesn't weigh much. Yes i keep losing the stylus but that's my problem not theirs.
#27
would make a nice coaster, but apart from that its a useless bit of kit, web browser is awful, games are for children, camera is awful. Worth buying if you still live in the 1980's

It is in their wisdom for those that are not bothered with portability, that would prefer the bigger screens for sitting at home with, they feel there is a market for that. The same way as they thought there was a market for the gameboy micro with its eye wrenching small screen that would fit in your pocket and was extremely portable!

Unlike your avatar, which is still useful in 2010 as a doorstop :-D

I must admit, I didn't buy into the gimmicks that the DSi provide, and certainly won't be buying into the gimmick of bigger screen that the DSi XL provides either.

Wonder how long it will be before some third party manufactured releases stick on magnified screen projectors for the DS Lite and DSi....the cheaper option

The R4i and M3i Zero work on the DSi, so should also work on the DSi XL. The only thing that would stop them working is if a new firmware is released for the consoles (which, ok, probably will happen) but even when that happens it's just a case of waiting for new firmware for the cards, which should take a matter of days, you won't have to wait for a whole new type of card to come out.

I don't get why people are dissing it. Yes, Nintendo are milking it, but it's a hugely successful console so can you blame them? You don't have to buy it, so it's just another option for anyone who doesn't already have one. It's a shame they didn't increase the resolution for the bigger screens, but it's only an extra 1.2 inches so it will hardly make any difference.

Personally I've got a black DS Lite that has been used a lot but well looked after so it's in excellent condition, but I was still thinking about replacing it with a new one. If I do, it may well be a DSi XL, not just for the bigger screens but also for the extras that were introduced with the DSi - especially the built in web browser. I only think it's a shame about the colours but surely others will follow - my DS Lite should last until then and hopefully I'll be able to get one a bit cheaper by then too!

For anybody considering this IMO get a ds lite, the dsi and dsi xl are nowhere near worth the extra, nintendo are ripping the a**e out of this platform now.

But the parents buying these for the next generation gamer didn't care, and the kids had fun on them. Just like some kids had fun on Game and Watch.
I think some people take toys too seriously
This is the price of 3 plastic Buzz light year toys that will get a fraction of the use.

Problem with waiting though for other colours is the same as buying a Gameboy Micro at the end of the life of the Gameboy Advance, wait a year to buy a DSi XL and by then I am sure they will have plans to release a follow up to a 6 year old handheld, yes the DSi & XL have enhanced features and faster CPU over the older DS/Lite, but are for the most part gimmicks that are not being utilised with software.

I see the DSi XL market more for those with either high disposable incomes, or those that have avoided the DS for the last 5 years and want to take the plunge and larger screens appeal.

I have had a black DS Lite since launch day thats well looked after (upgraded from the old phat DS) and have no intentions at all in buying either the DSi or XL

What a stupid comment. Nintendo have evolved the DS so that the kids coming of gaming age get a better machine and more choice. This is actually the first Nintendo portable where the actual hardware hasn't been improved.

More you are misreading my potted history, I take gaming seriously, and just pointing out Nintendos potted history of rehashes.

Yeah and two generations of handhelds were rehashed with minor improvements of shape design and screen enhancement.

The DSi and DSi XLs extra functions are gimmicky apart from the web browser, which is about the only thing that benefits from the increased CPU speed.

For true games players, the DSi and DSi XL offer nothing notably of interest, and the lack of sales of the DSi has proved that the majority of consumers feel that way.

Games consoles are toys, all this talk of hardcore gamers and serious gamers and grown up games, who the ### wants to grow up? I would rather be playing on a DSI XL tomorrow than stuck in traffic and paying bills that's for sure.

My Neice had an original DS and back then no one cared about the backlighting as there was nothing around the same price to compare it with. She loved the machine to bits, she now plays on the PS3 and can kick most adult's ***** at fighting games. Her parents were able to take advantage when the better DS lite came along, and I'm sure parents this xmas have opted for the DSi. Calling them rehashes is stinks of snobbery. The gaming kids of tomorrow willl only be too happy to have the next Nintendo "rehash". The hours of fun in the extra software in the DSi for a start.
