Sony PlayStation 3: 60 GB Model
[PS3] Our Price: £425.00
PS3 is the most advanced computer system that serves as a platform to enjoy next generation computer entertainment contents in the home, realized through the combination of Cell and RSX processors, in addition to the playability of a vast catalog of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software titles.

Having Giga-bit Ethernet and a pre-installed hard disk drive (HDD) as standard in PS3, users will be able to download a variety of contents as well as access on-line games and services over the network.

Equipped with basic input/output ports, PS3 supports a broad range of displays from conventional NTSC/PAL standard TVs to the latest full HD (1080i/1080p) flat panel displays, offering the joy of the most advanced computer entertainment contents to homes around the world. For use in living rooms, maximum heat and noise reduction has been achieved with a noise level equivalent to that of the current slim-line PlayStation 2.

With the overwhelming computational power of the Cell processor, PS3 is capable of playing back content from Blu-ray (BD) disc at a bit rate of multiplex 48Mbps with ease, the maximum bit rate defined in BD standards.

The new controller for PS3 has been created by refining and improving the worlds most popular PlayStation controller which has shipped more than several hundred million units worldwide. The controller for PS3 employs a high-precision, highly sensitive six-axis sensing system that is capable of processing all parameters within the controller itself, thereby eliminating the need for any additional settings on the display system. By applying this technology, it will become possible to freely control the PS3 system over the network.

Seems a good price. ChoicesUK are quoting £450 for this version.
#8
Thanks for the heads up on this, I'm starting to worry whether the price is just going to get higher and higher.

I've pre-ordered mine with ChoicesUK and even they don't even know what the sale price is yet. They've taken £100 down payment from me and have put the 'left to pay' column at £350. They swear to me that this is because they believe £450 to be the top end of the scale but it should be cheaper. The 'left to pay' is just a figure they've put together and it can be amended once the RRP has been released.

To be honest I've heard everything from £380-£550 for the 60GB. Only time will tell.

I agree £425 for a games console isn't exactly a hot deal imo, maybe other people will find this a good deal but I certainly wouldn't purchase the ps3 for that insane amount of money considering that you can get really good spec laptop/pc for the same price of money!

:?

i cant believe that the anti ps3/sony thing has spread even to hotdeals.

i get the feeling that even if it'd been £400 the cold response would have been the same.

if you dont hate sony you're just not cool these days...
#14
maybe if they bundled it with a free toploading Betamax tape player it would be worth it:whistling:

Isn't £425 the normal official price in UK anyway?

I too find that price too expensive and didn't consider getting one at all when it was announced. Then I went to canada last christmas and saw the shops there had stock and selling the 60Gb version at £315. Couldn't resist at that price. If it was £425, I wouldn't have bothered.

The OP should be thanked for finding this as I don't think there'll be any stock left after release day. Voted Hot as many people will want one of these when it's out.

I voted cold (Even though I own a PS1 and PS2), for the following reasons:-

A games console is not worth £425 (without a game) of anybodys money, if you really need one, wait. The price will soon drop to something more reasonable when Sony realise the demand isn't there at £425.

Almost every game being release for the PS3 has already been released previously on the Xbox 360 (it has lost a lot of it's exclusive titles).

Sony is trying to push its new bluray format onto the market via their games console (increasing the cost of the machine), this is an unnecesary expense for a format which I have no interest in.

In 2005, Sony showed a large number of PS3 games, to show how much of an improvement over its rivals the PS3 will be (the demos were then proved to be fake CGI mock-ups, the actual games are very poor representations of the original CGI)

Sony's comments about the consumer over the last year have been arrogant and extremely childish, regarding criticism of it's pricing, Sony's CEO said "If the public think it's too expensive, they will just have to work harder (to earn it)" and of it's gullible target audience he commented "well to be honest, we could launch it without any games at all and they (the consumer) would buy it anyway!"

and finally, the reviews have been less than favourable for the final product, here are a few:-

http://www.gametrailers.com/viewnews.php?id=3961

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=155309

They are my reasons, I have nothing against Sony (they make some great TV's) but this time the product just isn't worth the original asking price. A shame from a gamers point of view, but true (roll on the PS4)

Added pre-order details to title and Thanks for this by the way :)

I don't hate the PS3, I'd really like one, I just think the price is way over the top, and it can't be called a hot deal, because the Blu-ray dvd-player, for which your paying so much money doesnt have a guaranteed future, most experts believe that only 1 format will survive in the long run, so you could be left with paying £425 for just the games console which would be way overpriced.
#20
Voted + on this one, not that it's a good price (for a console) or anything! ;-)
#21
There is no way I'd pay that kind of money for a games console. Why would anyone be interested in buying a PS3? If you want top notch graphics and slickness buy a 360. If you want entertainment and playability go for a wii ;-)

I've never been interested in owning a Playstation or PS2, both were sub-standard machines with sub-standard games.

I'm a hardcore Nintendo and Sega fan, both of which know how to make good machines and make fantastic games. I also have to give respect to M$ for the XBOX, good machine with some great games. They missed a trick though by not making the 360 totally backward compatible.

Playstation and PS2 were successful because of the marketing, not because they were any good. They have carried Sony for years now but I Don't think the PS3 will be able to keep carrying the company.

The real big release in March is Halo 3, now that is something to look forward to.

PS3 for £356 jap version, butyou have to find a way to get it to the UK. Maybe send it to a relative in America or Asia and get them to send it to you.
#23
at least with the 360 you have a choice of what you get, even though microsoft ramp the prices up (£79.99 for a 20gig hard drive... I don't think so) but with Sony, their trying to shove everything down your throat at once, I'd never pay that much for a console
#24
I think price has been a deciding factor...I've already joined the Xbox 360 clan but don't want to delve to the depths of fanboyism (i.e. anti-PS3s rants). Its not necessarily the console itself at fault...just Sony's attitude at times...which I know has probably been exaggerated as irate Europeans await the delayed launch of the console.

The price of £425 must be the console itself and no games....
The £550 @ Play.com has 3 games. Each game costs ~£50 at launch so you save £25

Considering the Xbox 360 has been out for 15 months now there are some surprisingly good deals on hardware for it....e.g. HD-DVD drive for £120.

It all boils down to whether you prepared to pay X amount more for the PS3? If you are prepared, than buy it! :whistling:

I haven't voted btw...it shouldn't be voted cold really as its good for bringing people's attention for pre-ordering, not so much a hot deal
#25
Ive got a ps1, ps2 and psp which are all great. But the ps3's price is ridiculous, and i certainly wont be considering one at that price...

Your basically playing for a blu ray player with a upscaled ps2 attached, and i can see them losing the format battle (betamax, minidisc anyone?)

They make great AV equipment, but I think theyve pushed it too far with the ps3...

Voted cold btw

especially since sony have forced the porn industry to use HD-DVD by not allowing adult content onto Blueray... porn is always the deciding factor in format wars :w00t: :w00t:

Shouldn't be voted cold just because you don't want one, that defeats the whole point of this site.. As for these comments.

"A games console is not worth £425 (without a game) of anybodys money, if you really need one, wait. The price will soon drop to something more reasonable when Sony realise the demand isn't there at £425."

A games console is worth as much as people are willing to pay, i don't think a souped up Gamecube with a movement sensor is worth £180 (the wii) yet people are falling all over themselves to get one. Considering standalone Blu Ray players are around £500 the PS3 represents fantastic value for money on that basis alone. Whether you actually want a HD player is another matter.

"Almost every game being release for the PS3 has already been released previously on the Xbox 360 (it has lost a lot of it's exclusive titles)."

Wrong. Final Fantasy, arguably one of the most popular and important game franchises is coming to the PS3 and not the 360. Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Lair, FLOW, Metal Gear Solid 4, Formula One, White Knight Story, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance Fall Of Man and plenty of others are all PS3 exclusive.

"Sony is trying to push its new bluray format onto the market via their games console (increasing the cost of the machine), this is an unnecesary expense for a format which I have no interest in."

Well don't get one then, why do you feel the need to tell others not to get one? Gonna buy a HD DVD player for your 360? You will have to at some point because MS will be making games for the HD DVD.

"In 2005, Sony showed a large number of PS3 games, to show how much of an improvement over its rivals the PS3 will be (the demos were then proved to be fake CGI mock-ups, the actual games are very poor representations of the original CGI)"

Motorstorm looks very much like the trailer and nothing has been seen of Killzone2 yet so what else?

"Sony's comments about the consumer over the last year have been arrogant and extremely childish"

What's that got to do with whether you buy a product or not?

Sad but true, it was the main factor in VHS beating Sony's "Betamax" system.

I think another reason the Adult entertainment industry has chosen HD DVD over bluray, is because they now see bluray as aimed at children because of its inclusion in a playstation (and that is obviously not their market).

Good post horacehogarth

I've got a 360 already which is great and will be getting my PS3 in March, unfortunately it seems people think it's cool to jump on the bash Sony bandwagon lately.. having seen a PS3 in action it's fantastic and i can't wait to get one. The fact it's HDMI is a big plus for me and also the 60GB Hard Disk is another plus. Hideo Kojima has said recently that he wants to use a 50GB Blu Ray disc for Metal Gear Solid4, should be interesting!

"Gonna buy a HD DVD player for your 360? You will have to at some point because MS will be making games for the HD DVD."

Are your really sure about that because everything I've read regarding the HD-DVD format on the XBOX 360 is contradictory to your statement. I certainly wouldn't be too pleased if it were true.
#32
don't knock the ps3 until you actually own one. unless you are an unsuccessful scalper i think most people who own a ps3 are happy with what they have got. i own a ps3 and i am very pleased with it. i think it is worth every penny.
#33
MS won't be releasing games on HD-DVD - that would stop over 90% of the 360 user base being able to buy and play the games.

Common sense really.
#34
There's a lot of interesting opinion here from both sides.
Simple economics though, if the price is right the stock will go quick. Sell-outs in Japan and USA, along with very high PSN registrations seem to indicate it's not overpriced right now, but who knows in 6-12 months?
IMHO it's well worth the money, especially for the next-generation realism of games like F1, which is literally unmatched if you are lucky enough to play it on a nice big HD telly!
