Was in Blockbuster today and spotted this cracker of a deal.

Basically all 'old' model PS3s (ie not the new Slim) are £159.99 2nd hand.

Now the reason this is such a good deal is that included in this is the original 60Gb model which has backwards compatibility with PS2 games.

The guy behind the counter says this is just a temporary deal, and the prices will be going back up this Friday (Dec 4th).

PS Be warned, you may wish to ask them to test the machine for you first, as the first one i got (60Gb) was cutting off and indicating it was overheating with a red flashing light after about 5-10 minutes usage.

Apologies if this has been submitted already, i did have a search but nothing turned up.

do they not come with 6 month warranty better paying for a new one if you can
#2
To be honest I would steer clear of the original 60Gb.

I've already had to fix a couple because of the YLOD and it seems to me that most are on their last legs.

Just my opinion. :whistling:
#3
had a 60gb just after launch sold in sept to get a slim
#4
still have a 60 gig... going strong even with daily use since launch
#5
yeah, it's a 6 month warranty, but tbh, if the 60gb's are dropping off now, if i get 6 months out of it i'll be happy to just take it back and swap for a newer, non-60gb model ;)
#6
Nothing wrong with 2 60gb ps3's here either had them both since launch.

So from your statement, we should stay away from ALL Xbox 360's :whistling:

lol, nah I have one of those, although it barely gets used, as I'm more of a PS3 person.

I think the point I was trying to make was that I would spend the extra to get the more reliable slim.

On a seperate note, I have an 80gb one from not long after launch (I sold my launch 60gb when they were selling for crazy money on ebay) and I reckon thats on it's way out - as sometimes it hangs when turning off, and just keeps flashing till I turn off from main switch on rear.

I am paranoid that I'll lose all my saves and stuff, so will be getting a Slim very soon.

I have fixed a couple of friends 60gb's (the fix didn't last long, but did give them time to back up their drive) and I wouldn't trust one myself.

As I said my opinion.

No i was just commenting on how crap Xbox 360's are with their massive failure rate. The YLOD problem is much much less than those :)
Basically i mean we have more need to steer away from Xbox 360's than the 60Gb's (My 60Gb hasn't had a problem in over 2 years though)
#11
the new 40 and 80 GB's are the best.

might as well buy a ps2 if your so keen on playing ps2 games.
i bet people playing ps2 games on ps3 will be playing ps3 games on ps4.

how hard can it be playing the right games for the right system?

some people are so picky and then moan about no backwards compatability which costs quiet a lot and then moan about the price of the console being too high.

erm...it was sony that touted itself around saying how great it was that it had backwards compatibility, you can't just remove a feature and not expect backlash from consumers.

Although i agree with you...just buy a ps2 they only cost what? 20 quid? but the principle of the thing i can see why people would moan.
#13
tbh the ps2 compatibility is a big thing for me, because i'm a massive RPG fan and still have at least half a dozen on PS2 that i've not even touched yet, so having the ability to play them on the PS3 rather than having to root around behind the tv to plug in the ps2 again is a bonus, especially when i already have my pc, 360 and wii hooked up to it ;)

i don't undertstand why people just disregard old games just because something newer and shinier comes out.

people still watch old films, so whats wrong with people who want to play old games too?

Being able to play PS2 games is a great thing, i have done it lots of times if i get bored with the PS3 games, and you don't need a PS2 stuck beside it, plus you also have a memory card reader and 2 extra USB ports and a chrome strip

Even if you don't use any of these much, it's still an advantage

Got my PS3 60Gb on launch day and it's still going strong. Keep meaning to go back and play Shadow of the Colossus on it, God I wish they'd do a PS3 version of that game!

i bought 60gb mainly because it had backwards compability...its not about being picky, but some people want to play ps3 games but they had 100's of ps2 games lying around too ;) + ps2 games catalogue is like 7000 titles ! :D

I'm a big Final Fantasy nut, so the backwards compatibility is a huge selling factor for me :)

problem i have now is do i buy FF13 on 360 or PS3? lol
#19
I bought a 40GB in March 2007.

It is still perfect.

I bought another 40GB for my bedroom off ebay a couple of weeks ago and it is wrecked. Really badly looked after. Got ripped off and the advert claimed it was in immaculate condition! Gypos!

The longevity of your PS3 really depends on how well you look after it IMHO.

No you werent you were trolling.

This is a PS3 thread and when the other poster mentioned YLOD (a legitimate problem in the context of this thread) you immediately saw it as a threat to your fanboy manhood and thus reverted to 'but the 360 is worser' type. When it clearly has nothing to do with the 360.

Thats trolling in my book.
#21
Still got my launch 60GB too. It's quieter than my launch Wii. And come on, who'd choose a Mega Drive 2 over the original Mega Drive today? The luxurious PS3 60GB with its witchcraft buttons and shininess is where it's at. Unless you like to save a bit on your electricity bills...
#22
also comes with 1 month free unlimited BLURAY/GAME rentals. so u could rent a game a day - latest ones as well.
#23
if you get the ylod will sony fix it for free?

Had mine for almost 3 years no problems. Easily the most reliable of all phat ps3's

£100 or something they charge
#26
The percentage of faulty PS3's is minimal in comparsion to Xbox 360 faults.
I have 3 Xbox 360's so that in itself tells a story and I have bought 6 in total since launch.
Since I bought my launch PS3 I am still on the same one so for my money, this is a hot deal for the 60 gb ones.

Upgrading to a 250gb drive is cheap and easy and you get the best of both worlds. :)
#27
If this does include the old ones that include the PS2 backwards compatibility, then its hot from me, they've gotten so rare and that functionality makes it like gold, I think these still go for original price (£400, £500?) or more on ebay
#28
I've had my 60gb (although the drive's 320gb now) since launch without a single problem.

Personally, I prefer it to the slims. Sony went all out to make a money-no-object shiney touch sensitive dream machine... now they are desperately trying to reign the consumer price (and loss per machine) in, they are reverting to cheaper details (hence the finish and buttons IMHO). And you can put Linux on the originals. (and I still play PS2 tourist trophy)

I agree mine died just after the launch of the slim they are all starting to die now.

this is quite a good offer saying you can buy a 60gb for £160 that is half of what i payed for mine 2 years ago. My 60gb has been running really well apart from a random lock-up every now and again but im hoping it doesnt get ylod dont want to pay £100 to repair it even though it is a good model. Worth paying though with the chrome and 2 extra slots looks better then other models.

I was just saying that the PS3 problem is a drop in the water compared to Xbox 360's RROD balls up.
Just stating a fact. and i said that there is nothing wrong with 60Gb's, as long as you take good care of it and keep it well ventilated.

It certainly was he is a troll for sure, and the word "MASSIVE" he used made me lol.

Surely that makes both of you a pair of trolls then for coming and commentating on this thread backing up your inferior console? :-D

And yes the Xbox problem is indeed "massive" with almost half of Xbox 360's having the problem, to me, anything above 20% would be a "massive" fail

:lazy: lets not go down this route for the 8 billionth time, shall we? Its off-topic and tbh, annoying.

It all depends on choice
PS3 > Small chance of known failure = dead console = £100 fix
X360 > larger chance of known failure = dead console = free fix (in 3yr period)

Me = X360 fanboi  but I know a hot deal when I see one (simply due to the 60Gb being available, else average)
#33
surely the 160GB for 160 isn't bad no!?

Wrong, you are covered for your first year on PS3

if you can find one in stock at your local yeah, but the deal is primarily about the 60gb version imo, as they usually go for over 200 quid still on ebay.

the one i got mine at (Ashton-u-Lyne) had quite a few 60Gb's, a few 40's and a couple of 80's. Don't think they had many 160Gb's, if any.
#36
Do they come boxed or with a controller at all ? or is it just the console itself.
#37
this deal is hot for me i just rang couple of london stores and they do have them in stock if anyone in london is looking for this deal the catford branch in SE london told me they have plenty in stock
#38
thats funny, I just happen to ring the other SE London stores - Welling and Eltham. Welling are selling it for £199.99 and Eltham dont have any preowned consoles in stock or something like that.

Thanks muj, I will try Catford...

all depends how they were traded in mate.

i got one in a box, but it seemed like most of the ones they had were unboxed.

just need to ask them in the shop if they have any boxed ones or not.
#40
I went to four different blockbusters all sold out but they would sell at £159.99 if they had them or they wouldnt honour this deal and charged 200 pound. Tried ringing 10 different stores in Manchester and same situation Ashton was very adament they wouldnt sell em for this price. Thanks anyway op worth a try.
