Preloved was launched in 1998 by founder Ian Buzer. Buzer was a fan of attending car boat sales and visiting charity shops and initially the website was just a hobby website. Preloved wasn’t the first website of its kind; companies like Loot and Exchange Mart already existed. However, Preloved quickly acquired an audience, largely by word of mouth. In 2013, Preloved created National Second Hand Day, a special day to celebrate the UK’s love of buying second hand goods. In March 2014, The Hut Group purchased the operator of Preloved, Moo Ltd, for an undisclosed sum. Preloved is furthermore well-rated on TrustPilot, one of the main website reviews websites.
Preloved is completely online-based and works on a peer-to-peer model. To buy anything through the website, from a second-hand TV to a second-hand car, you will need to get in contact with the seller via the website at www.preloved.co.uk.
Preloved can be used on any internet-ready device such as a desktop, tablet, or smart TV. There are also native Preloved apps available for both iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android devices such as smartphones and tablets.
The items that are sold on the website are countless. The following are just some of the main categories on Preloved:
Top Brands Available at the Preloved Online Shop
What’s available at Preloved depends entirely on what people in the UK are selling at that time. The following are some of the most sought-after brands:
Users set the price of the products they sell on Preloved, so there aren’t any times of the year when Preloved run a sale. However, there are times of the year when there is a surge of new products listed on Preloved, often at reduced prices.
Before and after Christmas is a good example of this. Money can be tight for many people both before and after Christmas, and many people sell second-hand items or unwanted Christmas gifts to raise some extra cash. This can be a good time to keep an eye on Preloved as you might find a bargain that you wouldn’t find the rest of the year. Of course, these deals can come up at any time of the year so you don’t have to wait until the Christmas period to do your shopping.
To contact a seller, you will need to create an account with Preloved. This allows Preloved to verify you as a legitimate user and to create a message inbox so that you can see and reply to messages from other buyers and sellers.
You can either sign up for a free membership or a paid membership (£5 per year for buyers, £25 for sellers). The added bonus of the paid membership is that you get slightly quicker access to viewing new adverts.
Preloved simply list the advert. The actual exchange of cash for goods is between you and the seller. If you’re buying something large such as a second-hand couch or bike, then the chances are you’ll meet the seller first. It’s always a good idea to try and meet the seller first to make sure that the item is exactly as it is described at preloved.co.uk. For cars, bikes, and other such products, you may want to take a test drive first before making your final decision.
How you pay the seller is up to you. Cash is common, although it’s not uncommon for payments for more expensive items to be paid for by bank transfer or PayPal. Preloved recommend using PayPal as you are protected under PayPal’s Buyer Protection scheme and if something goes wrong, you can mail a claim to be reimbursed in full.
Preloved have some sage advice about buying second hand, for example trying to meet the seller in a public rather than a private place as well as not carrying too much cash with you.
Usually, you pick up your buyings directly at the seller. Sometimes you will need to have an item shipped. This could be something that you’ve already seen after meeting the buyer face-to-face, or it could be something that you’re purchasing online from the buyer.
For larger items, Preloved work with the transport company www.anyvan.com. You’ll see an option to get a quote at the bottom of most pages, particularly on larger items such as furniture. Simply enter your postcode and click ‘get instant price’ to see how much it would cost to get it delivered by AnyVan.
How you get your items shipped is between you and the seller. Most people will ship using Royal Mail as this is usually the least complicated option for sellers. Options include First and Second class postage for smaller, less important items and Next Day Delivery for items you want urgently. If you are buying something valuable such as a mobile phone, you should use a tracked, insured service. If anything goes wrong with the delivery, you will then be compensated.
Returning items can be tricky, and so it’s important that you make sure you’re happy with your purchase before exchanging any cash. Preloved do not handle the financial side of the exchange, so you will need to take it up with the seller directly. Often, the easiest way to do this is using PayPal’s buyer protection. Under The Sale of Goods Act 1979, any item sold by an individual must match the title and description of the advert. Buying from an individual gives you significantly less protection than buying from a company. The product has to match the description, so if you order an iPhone and don’t receive an iPhone, you are protected. However, the Act doesn’t necessarily protect you if the quality of the item you receive is different to what you expect – unless the quality is explicitly stated in the description. In any case, to avoid confusion, try and meet up with the seller to look at the item first.
Preloved is very active on the Social Media:
Preloved also have a blog where the team at Preloved discuss tips for buying and selling, upcycling, and gardening. Buying and selling second hand can sometimes be confusing, so it’s worth taking a look at Preloved’s FAQ section for answers to some of the most common questions and concerns.
For most problems or questions, you will need to get in touch with the seller directly. However, if you need to contact Preloved you can do so by using the contact form on their website.
You could also get in touch with Preloved’s parent company via e-mail at email@example.com or their postal address:
