If you reserve the Sony Playstation® 3 at Comet for a £50 deposit you will be placed in a reservation queue. We are operating on a 'first come first served' basis, so the earlier you join the reservation queue the more likely you are to receive a console on the release date.

As soon we have confirmation from Sony of console, games and accessories allocations we will put together a number of great value launch packages#. Please note that Playstation® 3 consoles that have been pre-ordered will only be supplied in packages and not stand-alone.

Once the launch packages are confirmed, you will then be e-mailed full details and asked to contact us to confirm and pay* for your choice of launch package, as well as select your preferred delivery date.

Please note, pricing for the PlayStation® 3 and launch packages is subject to confirmation.

As Sony have not yet allocated stock to UK retailers, we are currently unable to guarantee that you will receive your PlayStation®3 console on the release date. However all preorders of Playstation®3 consoles will be delivered on or from the release date of the 23rd March. Please note, as the PlayStation®3 in very high demand and supply is likely to be restricted, you may only make one reservation per household##.

To avoid disappointment, please ensure that your contact details are correct so that we can keep you up to date with any potential problems with your reservation. Once the stock arrives, we will attempt to contact you 3 times to arrange delivery. If we are unsuccessful, or you do not respond within 1 week, your details will be removed from the reservation queue and your deposit refunded.

Your statutory rights are not affected

What happens when the Playstation® 3 launches?

Once Comet has received its initial stock allocation we will make 3 attempts to contact those customers who first pre ordered a console to confirm and pay* for their choice of launch package and arrange delivery. If we cannot contact you and we do not hear from you within 1 week, you will lose your place in our reservation queue. Please note, all pre-order deposits for the Sony Playstation® 3 will be refunded to the original credit / debit card. Comet will endeavour to refund your deposit as soon as possible, however please allow up to 2 weeks for the deposit to be credited to your account.
Will all customers that pre-order Playstation® 3 get their console on the release date?

Currently, Comet cannot guarantee that all customers will receive their console on the release date. Demand for the Playstation® 3 is expected to be extremely high, and at present stock levels for launch are not known. As a result, Comet is restricting pre-orders to one per household##. We are also operating on a first come first served basis, so the earlier you join the reservation queue the more likely you are to receive a console on release.
# Comet will offer a choice of a number of entry level packages with a choice of one game, as well as step up packages with two games, three games and accessories.
*Please note, in order to speed up the payment process, we are unable to refund your deposit at the time we take payment for the launch package. Comet will endeavour to process this refund do this as soon as possible, however please allow up to 2 weeks for the deposit to be credited to your account.
## Please note, if any multiple orders are found for one household, or if we suspect anyone of breaching this rule, Comet reserves the right to cancel your deposit and issue a refund.

So its not technically £50 is it? The £50 is a deposit until prices are confirmed.
#2
Sorry should have been clearer, Preorder PS3 with £50 Deposit
#3
Not the best pre-order. £50 up front and then they charge you full whack upon despatch and you have to wait 2 weeks for the £50 to be refunded. I think HMV has been the best so far - no need for a bundle, no payment taken and Quidco too!

PLUS - Sony have just announced today that the European PS3 will not feature the hardware PS2 backwards compatibility or the Japanese and US models (which played around 97% of PS2 games without issue).

They have removed the PS2 chip as a cost-saving exercise and will now emulate the PS2 titles in software. They claim to offer emulation of "a few" PS2 games now.

There is a website that tells you which games will work....but.....the website claims that it'll announce these on March 23rd!

So anyone who has a definite pre-order have been mis-sold...

/stands back hoping thread will catch fire...

I also cancelled my PS3 pre-order because of the news! No more Sony consoles for me in the next few years I guess.

Details here..

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=23003

So not only are we paying alot more for the console, they are actually taking away components (to make more money) for the Euro release.
If there are any gamers or people thinking of purchasing - get one from the States.
I can personally vouch for a company called Videogamesplus.com. They delivered to my door (marked as a defective toy so no customs charge) with 3 days for £377 all in!

You can read the hundreds of happy gamers who have purchased from them at avforums.co.uk (ps3 section)...

they will play them in time, just sony is going to release software updates through the network! I know this may take time but why would you be playing ps2 games on your ps3 within a few months of purchasing it, surely you would be playing ps3 games!

They are also using a 'cheaper' more cost effective chassis for the european PS3 - whatever that means  Maybe itll be made out of cardboard or MDF !!!
#10
rip off!!! sony have stopped to new lows with this news

I'm an avid gamer (especially Xbox 360), but pre-ordered a PS3 with Amazon just in case Sony made an important announcement prior to launch that could persuade me to part with £500 for their games machine.

Well, they certainly made an announcement:- "a cheaper build and no PS2 backward compatibility chip included for Europe, to save money", so an inferior product than both Japan & the USA but with a higher price tag.

Sorry Amazon, but thanks to Sony, you have yourselves another cancellation.

No they won't. The EU PS3 is missing the special chip that handles the PS2 games. The PS2 support via software updates is limited (whatever limited means), but will never come close to 98%, which is what the US/Japan gamers got with their PS3.

So are we European gamers some idiots for Sony or what? We have to pay more $$ than anyone else, we have to wait longer than anyone else, and now we're getting a PS3 that is missing a critical component upon which I based my decision to pre-order a PS3 (now cancelled). :x
#13
I was gonna wait until XMAS 08, when hopefully it has a few good exculsives, multiformat titles arnt inferior to what my 360 can do and of course a major price drop. The only possible exculsives that will be worth getting would be FFXIII and Gran Turismo 5. However I am starting to think that the PS3 will be as big a flop as the Dreamcast (burnt my fingers there), and current sales do nothing to suggest otherwise. Maybe Sony are trying to beat Atari Jaguars record :giggle: :giggle: .

No.

From the press release: "Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3"
#15
tis a real shame since hearing this news, however it wont be long until some tech-heads will probably release some sort of chip/mod to allow playback of more ps2 games...

its only a matter of time.
#16
I'm not sure what to do now myself. I might wait for it to get hacked so it would be truely multi-region (including PS2 games) and then buy a US/Jap version.
#17
What I cannot understand is why the hell do you want to play PS2 games on it anyway. My other halves little brother has a PS2 and the graphics are terible OK I am comparing it to the XBOX and the 360 but why get new technology and play the old shite on it :?

I will confess I am taking the risk and buying 1 to put on fleabay (let the abuse begin) but I wont be buying one for myself even though I have owned a PS1 and PS2 before but since having the 2 XBOX's I prefer the gameplay and the remotes actually feel like you are holding something not a cheap bit of plastic.

And since I have had my 360 I have only ever played HALO 2 from the old XBOX games I had and don't play that anymore.

Sony aren't getting anther penny from me, they can forget it. They charge more, keep us waiting longer and now offer us a cut-down version!
Anyone for a cut-down version of the PS3 for a higher price and arriving much later than for USA and Japan. Forget it Sony, you're taking us for fools. BOYCOTT IT!
#19
funny yesterday I was interested in pre-ordering one, today I think i'm gonna wait a few years. Its unaccepetable offering it for more with inferior quality.

I second that. First, Sony gave us the root-kits. Then they gave us the exploding laptop batteries. Now they are trying to sell us a cut-down version of PS3 for lots of money, but I hope people will not fall into it!

Yep, cancelling my pre-order as well due to the news on backwards compat.

For all those people asking why this matters as we should be playing PS3 games well the answer for me is there is only 2 interesting PS3 games (Resistance & Motor Storm).Pretty much the rest of the launch titles I can get much cheaper if I wanted them for the 360. The reason I wanted to play PS2 games is there are a couple of classic games that I never got to play as I had an xbox instead of PS2 and thought now would be my chance to play them. Plus it's a principal thing as well, why pay more than anyone else and get less than anyone else!!

Im off to Canada at the weekend for a couple of weeks holiday so may just pick up a full fat Coke PS3 from there rather than the Diet Coke version they are trying to push on the UK!! Can also pick up the PS2 games I'm interested in for next to nothing while there :)

Wouldn't surprise me if the next thing they announce is that they are going to region lock the PAL PS3 games!!
#22
yep , stop mine too after hearing this news, have been a loyal fan of sony but it stop's here !:x
#23
glad i never pre ordered, will stick with my 360 and wii
#24
Sadly, though many members here and on other forums are now boycotting the PS3, it won't make much difference to Sony unless everyone tells their friends who are thinking about buying one and mentioning it on other forums where it's not already mentioned.
The word needs to spread as far as possible so Sony get the message that European consumers will not accept it.

Not going to abuse you over that, but it didnt take long in the US for ebay sellers to start losing money, and europe is going to have a lot more stock (1m, 200-300k in uk, allegedly), for less demand (amazon still havent run out of their pre-order allocation). You may find yourself out of pocket on the deal.

Game have JUST sent me out an e-mail shouting about guaranteed launch dates, limited stock, etc & the specs they are listing are STILL promoting the PS3 as "Backwards Compatible - Plays compatible PSone and PS2 titles"!!!

Is anyone selling(taking pre-orders on) these & being honest about it's capabilties?!?!?

I take it pre-orders are not going as well as anticipated?

The reason I ask is a lot of retailers are bombarding me with "Pre-order yours now!!!" emails. For the 360 and Wii launches they didn't do this as they had already sold out.

I might hold off for a bit, if sales are poor we might see a quick price drop

Well I think the main problem came from Sony themselves yesterday, when they announced that the European PS3's will be inferior to all others.

Trying to save themselves money by charging us more for a version with a cheaper build quality and the PS2 backward compatibility chip removed (so we can't play all the PS2 games like the rest of the World can) does make paying more for a second rate PS3 console a joke for us Europeans. :x
