Just went into my local blockbuster games in Runcorn and the had loads of boxed preowned XBOX360 core consoles for £49.99 with a 6 month warranty. Not bad for under £50 considering you get the console, pad, hd lead and power brick.
sorry no picture didnt have my phone with me.

#4
Good deal but you need to make sure it's not banned from xbox live.

I don't think pre-owned 360s are worth the hassle, its hard enough keeping a new one RROD free.

I've never owned a 360 before and have always been tempted to pick up a cheap one. If I bought one from BB, are there things I should do to protect from RROD as much as possible? I'm thinking making sure it has a good air flow is key but anything else?

Cheers

Great value. GAME want £99.99 for a 2nd hand Xbox Arcade.

Are we still allowed to call it 2nd hand? Everyone seems to say pre-owned now-a-days. I suppose it sounds nicer but it's still 2nd hand.
#13
Rang a local BB and they're charging 89.99 for an arcade, reckon its worth a haggle?

I agree i would not bother wasting my money on a used xbox i have had two xboxs & both of them have had RROD twice & disc drive probs!!!!! i got ps3 now 2 years no problems at all...... I have just purchased the new xbox with kinect for xmas & hope i have more luck this time.

Shame that this is obviously a local deal. I've been after a cheap xbox for a while now.
#16
@zuulan it might have had 4 or 5 owners

It seems to be fairly universal. I picked up one in Crawley, Sussex a couple of weeks ago. First one didn't work but Blockbuster were happy to exchange.
They had about 7 or 8 in stock. The replacement was an Elite (black) model but £50 only gets you the console and one controller, no hard disk. Thats another £10 or £20 depending on size.

ASFAIK the number of owners is irrelevant to the RROD and E74 errors, its the build date that seems to determine when your warranty is up. This was certainly the case for me, I bought my Premium in Dec 2007 but when I logged on to xbox.com when it RROD'd it said that my warranty ended September 2010 (which was the build date)?!? Either way, if its modded you're screwed so MAKE sure its not been fettled with.

@ oj0, air flow is not going to help, the problem lies in the fundamental design flaw that means that the motherboard heats up during use and stretches the X-clip (which secures the heatsink to the graphics chip). Over time the continual stretching and cooling breaks the contact between the heatsink and chip and it overheats. I've seen many reports that say you can make things worse by forcing air into the console as it disrupts the flow inside the case!

Basically, if you're getting an older console the chances of it RROD'ing is huge. If you really cant afford a new one, take a risk, but if it breaks and its been opened you may find that you'll be buying another very soon (so might as well have just bought a new one!).

@ frakison

Cheers buddy, you've confirmed what I pretty much already knew which was if I want one, buy a new one. My girlfriend tried out a Kinnect 360 the other day and was very impressed so may now have her backing to buy a new one :-D

Surely the 120gb elite is worth 90 quid with a 12 month warranty?

Whoever said it...you're right. It's based on manufacturing date. MS will repair those consoles who have RRoD upto 3 years after that date. Afterwards...you're out of luck and these days its probably just as easy to buy a new console than pay for the repair!

The older ones, PARTICULARLY the Core are probably the most prone to RRoD so I would always stay away from these, however, chances are if its quite an old console (as all Cores will be) and it still going then it should last you 6 months, and you can always change it under the BB warranty...

I've repaired loads of these and they're a nightmare >_> Try and keep it as ventilated as possible, but as has been mentioned its a design flaw really - overheating causes the Pb-free solder to melt the traces :/ ...or the m/b warps

Things are better these days...but not much ;)

I think the falcon chipset models don't have the same level of RROD faults. I think these were produced from very late 2007, but a bit of a google investigation should give mor info.If you can pick up one of these for £50 then it has to be a bargain.
#25
Heh. I remember the days when everyone wanted a Falcon to solve their RRoD woes - thing is the improvement isn't too significant :/ - the Falcon does have the extra subsidiary heatsink though. But pick one of these up if you can, like fredos said - Bargain really.
#26
I'd be happy to pay £50, not a lot more though, hopefully some other deals like this will come up. My check my local but it's only a small store
#27
So the elites not worth 90 with a warranty? A little help people :(

was contemplating getting the hubby a 360 for xmas (he already has a ps3 and a wii but keeps hinting for an xbox)
thought this price sounded ok but sorry to be stupid but what does this rrod thing mean??
many thanks

RROD
Red Ring of Death
Basically xbox is knacked and has overheated, Microsoft provide 3 year warrenty on xbox's for RROD, the older Xbox suffered badly from it, and the newer ones not so much.
#32
Was tempted but after reading all these horror stories i think i will give it a miss !
#33
I babied my Elite 360; I wouldn't run it too long at any one time, kept it well ventilated, never left it on overnight, always unplugged the power brick from wall etc. and 21 months later I still got the RROD.

The free repair was pretty quick at least, 8 days from when it was picked up, to being returned. Even more impressive considering the repair centre was in Germany.
And it ran perfectly until the day I traded it in against the 360 slim (on its release day) :p
Was approaching 3 years old and I got £100 for it.

As I expected, none in my local :(
