its's one of prince's very best albums, you couldn't say it was his best as most of his albums are so damn good it's hard to choose his best album from over 30 studio albums, but you really can't go wrong with this. the beatles white album was the definitve double album of the 60s, stevie wonders songs in the key of life was the definitive double album of the 70s and SOTT is the definitve double album of the 80s. each of those double albums covers a variety of styles of music and capturing the artists at the peak of creativity and fame. few can create a chock full double album with all killer and no filler

the thing is, at one point this was intended to be a triple album called the crystal ball, and even then it was all killer and no filler, but warners weren't confident about releasing an expensive triple album set in the 80s, so it was edited down to a 2 lp set. it started off as a single and then double lp set called the dream factory, before becoming the crystal ball and then SOTT. this was one of the most prolific periods of his career, and everything recorded was a masterpeice. it's just a shame that there are still amazing tracks from that period still locked away in the vaults unheard by the public. even the b sides released around that time are better than the hit singles released by most artists at the time. he's one of the few artists to have b sides and other throw away tracks become massive hit singles (manic monday, nothing compares 2 u, how come u don't call me anymore, i feel 4 u, kiss - he originally gave that away)

at the price it's worth buying as a stocking filler for any music lover

Madhouse is a group led by Eric Leeds, to whom was Prince's lead horns member (Sax, Alto Sax, Big Horn, Trumpet) from 1986-1988. They were signed to Paisley Park Records (which Prince owns) and its just mainly instrumental. Prince does feature on it though playing guitar Im sure.

Im sure your prince an will be thrilled =]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madhouse_(band)

that should explain it all. the boxset is a bootleg btw, there were only 2 officially released albums and long deleted, the original cds are very rare and go for quite a few quid on fleabay. it is a great collection of the 2 released albums, plus 12"s and b sides and the two unreleased albums

the music might not be to everyones taste, the style of the first 3 albums is best described as similar to the miles davis album tutu, whereas the npg version of 24 is more of a funky jazz album and more accessible

the madhouse albums have been out of print for literally about 20 years but are quite sought after by fans. there are also albums by the following acts that are equally sought after and hard to get, and definately worth getting as they are essentially prince albums with other peoples lead vocals

the family (contains nothing compares 2 u)
appolonia 6 (manic monday was pulled from this last minute)
vanity 6 (appolonia replaced vanity in the band and movie purple rain)
the time (all albums are great)
sheila e (first 4 albums have prince input)
jill jones (excellent first album)

there are many others but those are written performed and produced by prince. there are also a few lesser known prince albums such as xpectations, one night alone, the chocolate invasion, slaughterhouse and news, and also the npg albums goldnigga and exodus, these may be missing from the collection

and whilst there are literally hundreds or thousands of bootlegs and dozens of essential ones, try and track down the undertaker, a 40 minute live studio rehearsal with just prince on guitar and vocals, sonny t on bass and mike b on drums, it was originally to be given away with guitar player magazine but warners wouldn't let him. it was released on vhs and laserdisc in 95. the pulled cd is perfect quality and omits the overdubbing on the video release and dolphin is a different version from the vhs

the other essential live bootleg is called small club, an aftershow on 88 in holland, 2cd perfect quality soundboard recording, cover versions, new and unreleased songs, a laid back jam session

These are the things all Prince fans should have. Small Club is the CD that defines everything that is great about Prince in my opinion. Exodus epitomises his brillianty mid 90s Funk Rock phase and One Night Alone contains great music. As for Undertaker, there isn't much I wouldn't do to see this released on DVD, astonishing performance. If anyone has some spare Paypal trust me and search out these 4 things on ebay, you won't regret it.

As for Madhouse, I hate it. That and his News stufff does absolutely nothing for me. There are that many Princes that I like 99% of them - but the instrumental Prince seen on these two is the Prince I most dislike.

it might be helpful for those wanting to adventure further in prince by pointing out the styles of some of the mentioned albums as he covers so many styles

one night alone - solo piano album
the truth - solo accoustic guitar
the undertaker - guitar rock/blues
madhouse/news/expectations/cnote - instrumental jazz, but not cocktail/swing or easily accessible
kamasutra - instrumental ballet
goldnigga - npg's hip hop album (mainly tony m on lead vox/raps but worth it for black mf and johnny)
exodus - second npg album from 95, mainly sonny t on lead but funky like a p funk album
slaughterhouse/chocolate factory - early 2000ish online track compilations from npgmc

and just to warn that the 94 east stuff is cheap but also ****. only worth it to complete your collection, this is 70s sessions pre his first solo albums, prince plays keys and guitar, no vox

if you want a great collection of outtakes then the 34 disc set called work it (2.0) is essential. there is a similar older set called the work, but this is more updated (altho not 100% complete). this is of course a bootleg set of outtakes in the best circulating quality, only circulated via p2p afaik

the less said about NEWS the better imo. Small Club is an amazing gig, he plays Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic nearly 12 years before its released! I also reccomend getting any and every Lovesexy tour on CD. The DVD of the channel 4 broadcast is my favourite in my collection of nearly 30+ Prince DVDs.

also major rep for The Family's album

For those of you that are prince-curious I recommend visiting www.prince.org - a great resource and community of fans.

Sign o' the Times is truly great. At 3 pounds this is hot hot hot. I may just buy one as a spare!

Have some heat .... probably the last 'great' Prince album, the tour to this album was amazing as well, unfortunately the Wembley gigs were cancelled, I saw the tour in Holland, the SOTT DVD concert is worth getting hold of, shame they edited the DVD down to SOTT tracks apart from LRC, Prince was at the top of his game in the 80's.

another great double album and another great deal, diamonds and pearls for £3.15

this album introduced rapper tony m to the newly formed npg, not the greatest rapper to say the least, and many fans of prince were not fans of rap so they hated tracks like jughead and push, but that's only 2 tracks out of 13

btw, news isn't a bad album, it's just that it was an instrumental progressive jazz album with four 15 minute long tracks, completely different to anything previously released under princes name, and still very different from the madhouse albums. earlier this decade prince released music mainly by the internet, and released a 70 minute prog jazz style concept album about jehovas witnesses and followed that up with a fanclub only piano cd, an expensive triple live album boxset recorded during a small venue tour, then a "normal" cd given away free at his huge american tour, and all this before last years news of the world giveaway cd and 21 nights at the o2 (playing to half a million people in london alone). there is a live cd from his aftershow gigs available right now with his new book, and he has a new cd finished right now that's back to the old skool style, i just wonder how it's going to be released, so as you can see, prince doesn't stick to convention and usually confuses fans and public along the way. you will find that there will be people who can't stand his "regular" pop/funk music but love some of his more unconvential stuff like news, truth, undertaker, etc

i wouldn't say SOTT was his last great cd as the gold experience was fantastic, as was all the music around that 94/95 time, and the rainbow children is a great album although many fans hate it. i'd say you are pretty safe buying his albums up to 95 and from then on you should research before buying, not that the rest of the albums are bad, it's just that what came before was so good the rest isn't as great by comparison, or at least his pop/funk stuff

btw, there is a 20 minute track called the war that's also worth seeking out, it's a progressive funk track like the revolution will be televised meets what's going on. it was released as a single online and isn't on any album

One of Prince's best albums. H&R added.

A great compliment to this essential CD is the DVD. Cheapest I could find was at the Hut £5.23

Tesco have now cancelled my order blaming Entertainment UK (part of Woolworths) for not being able to get any more stock. They have given me a few hundred clkub card points as compensation so it isn't all bad.

Anybody know the next best price?

Just picked this up for £3 at my local Sainsburys.
