No, the FW is unimportant, but Sony just said that they gonna remove the dev-mode for the upcomming models to prevent jailbreak and clones.

But presumably this stock has been in the retailers hands for a while, do you think they've recalled them all or something ? Or haven't they been, is this what I've heard about the hold back of stock ?

We talk about a Sony thing so everything seems to be possible *rolleyes* . It was announced in every PS3 forum I know in Germany:
[...]Sony mit Auslieferung der neuen PS3 320 GB Modelle am 15.9.2010 den Entwickler und Debugging Modus entfernen werde.[...]
Translation:
[...] that Sony removes the developer and debbuging mode within the distribution of the new PS3 320 GB modells starting at 15th September 2010.[...]
Absolute and total rubbish.
ALL 320GB PS3's released on the 17th will 99% (of course I can't promise hell won't freeze over tomorrow) have firmware OLDER than 3.42.

Such a load of tosh, the 320GB models have been released for ages in other regions. It's obviously a translation of a translation, i.e the original comment was in english, then translated to german, then back to english. That or some would-be internet journalist buffoon got confused that 3.42 removes all debug features and since it's come out around now...used some "intuition"..and came up with a load of crap.
Sure, production of PS3's from now certainly will have firmware 3.42 or higher, but the ones being released on the 17th will have been made 2-3 months ago at least.
And it's been pulled back to the original 17th since then.
