Please leave a comment if you are voting cold, to help others. This does seem to be the best price around for the stand alone console. Please feel free to add a comment if this is incorrect. :)

Are these likely to fall by a large margin before mid march? Was thinking of getting one for my birthday.

Good luck finding a 60GB version....the last place to have them in stock was choicesuk in a bundle - maybe give them a call otherwise in down the second hand route me thinks!

There will apparently be a new SKU launched around March-April time with the new rumbling Dual Shock 3 Controllers I would wait until then.

You can get a new one here:
http://www.simplygames.com/info/14747

But its really expensive!! (altho less than it cost when it was release tho....), alternativly if youre really lucky then gamestation sometimes have pre-owned ones for sale for about £300 but you have to be REALLY lucky!!

Otherwise ebay as was mentioned above, although the prices seem to usually end up at around £400 as well. Im actually selling my 60GB'er on ebay at the moment (am switiching to a 40GB'er in order to free up some cash!)

EDIT: Oh, and voted Hot as this is a very good price for an upscaling DVD player, Blu-ray player and Linux PC...... Let alone a high definition gaming console

How would you use both an egg card and quidco - do you not have to buy it via a link from egg website to get that discount?

Just pay with your egg card when you go thro quidco. It worked for me, I got £40 off a LCD TV recently.

Only availiable for mega prices on EBay etc, however, most PS2 games did not run properly emulated on PS3 anyway, so not worth the extra expense.
#18
i can vouch for it being the cheapest stand-alone. i spent 2 weeks searching and weighing up all the different bundles from everywhere before going for this one. got it a week ago and love it. much better than my 360, which i've sold.

kermitz- you could look at going for a standalone ps2. second hand it will still be as cheap as trying to hunt down a 60gb. plus i believe that the 40gb are more energy efficient and much quieter than the 60gb.

I only have one PS2 game that doesnt work (Buffy Chaos Bleeds). All the others run fine (24, Buzz, GTA3 etc)

Mine isnt silent, ramps up to level 3 within 20 mins and stays there even when idling. Quite distracting for DVDs/BRs. Its not as noisy as an xbox but the fan is distracting.

I'd give the trading forums on AVforums - there are often folk selling 60gb ones - and certainly not as bad price-wise as the eBay robbers.

what about when you turn it on...? just kidding. seems like its the luck of the draw with noisy ps3s. some say its silent, some say its noisy. just dont get a 360. jet plane.

I had 60gb PS3 and my xbox 360 was far more noisey

Buying a 2nd hand PS2 must be cheaper than trying to source a 60gb

Apart from an issue with the PS2 title "BLACK", we have any no issues playing any of our PS2 games.

If anybody is interested, Sony offer a web page to check on the compatability of titles where the PS2 "Emotion Chip" is emulated by software on the PS3:

My 360 is silent.... had to dig its guts out and replace with no stock fans ETC :-D

If MS wont do a good job looks like you have to do it yourself ;-)

But hot deal for ps3 ( unless we get that price drop that is going around )

That was Sony's reasoning (excuse?) for the 40Gb model. For the difference in price, the punter does not need to sell their existing PS2 console to fund the purchase of a PS3 & lose compatability. The original PS3 60Gb console (£425 RRP, then down to £399 with the additional controller & bundled games) would be the same cost as the 40Gb PS3 with the additional purchase of a new PS2 console.

It sort of makes sense. I think :)

My Dad got a brand new 60gb just before xmas, he put it in a cabinet as was so noisy, but then it overheats when playing blu rays.....he is in his 50's so does not use it for games.

Think I will stick with a 40gb and upgrade the hard drive, give all my old ps2 games to a charity shop.

My day-of-release 60Gb PS3 is near-silent too.

PS[3].

Sony issued press reports yesterday to confirm that a new PS3 model, a 40Gb Satin Silver console bearing reference "CECHH00SS", will be available in Japan from 6 March 2008.

Shipping initially with a matching Satin Silver (wireless) SIXAXIS controller, but no bundled game titles, the new model will cost 39,980 JP Yen (including tax)... about £190 (GB Pounds)!

A "DUALSHOCK 3" controller will be available in the new colour (to complement the existing Black & White variants), for 5,500 JP Yen (including tax) [around £26 (GB Pounds)].

Also, the Japanese market sees the introduction of the "PLAYSTATION(r) 3 The Best" series game titles from 19 March 2008.

The first titles to be available at a reduced price (like the existing PlayStation & PS2 "Platinum" series titles already available) of 3,800 JP Yen (including tax) [£18 (GB Pounds)] will be...

"Folklore" (or "Folksoul" as it is known locally)
"Resistance: Fall Of Man"
"Ninja Gaiden Sigma"
"Mobile Suit Gundam: Target In Sight"
"Ridge Racer 7"

The budget range series will also be made available worldwide, but no date has been fixed for any other local region as yet.

No release date (or confirmation of release at all) for the White PS3, or the Silver PS3, for Europe has been set either.

fp.

You can always offer your PS3 titles for sale/trade here.

If you wish, prepare a list & send it to me :)

had a jap 60gb ps3 over a year now quiet and i dont understand how a higher capacity hd can make a big diff to power consumption
#32
Thanks OP & other posters. Ordered one, total outflow will be £260 (discount code - £10+quidco 3%+egg 3%). Already have Destiny child - live in atlanta BD to start with (visual treat :)). Heard Shakira - oral fixation is good as well.

agree with that, much better package the 60gb version, still not sure why sony dropped it in favour of the less specified 40gb version except to just pxss people off.
#34
Different (cheaper) chip set for new ps3s, which is why it lost backwards compatability.

To make more money.

They've reduced the cost of production for each unit.

its not the hd which affects the power comsumption, the new ps3s(40gb) have 65nm chipset rather than 90nm in the original this means the machine uses less watts, produces less heat and therefore needs less cooling(hence fans run quieter)

And before anyone argues I had a "silent" jap 20gb, and a silent 60gb Us machine, and didnt believe it could be any quieter...

just got a new 40gb uk one and it is definitely quieter (ie. it is quieter than silent!)

and cooler can play games/movies for about 6 hours and still has cool air coming out the side rather than warm after a short period b4.

nope not quite right, the different chipset doesnt remove the compatibility, its just they no longer have bothered to add the two (on original jap/us machines, 100% backward comp) and one(on the european machines 80% or so backwards comp) chips from the original PS2 soldered onto the top corner of the board.
#38
I stand corrected. :)

Good deal for the console though
#39
i think i may sell my 60gb one on fleabay and get this one.

i am not a tree hugger or anything, but anyone can see the benefit in a power consumption drop.

plus i have absolutely zero interest in playing ps2 games on it, and never have done (ps1->ps2->ps3, not once have i put a previous generation game in a new console)

So you are not at all bothered about the carbon footprint of leaving the "[email protected]" application running for 24 hours a day?

No, me neither.

But if your 60Gb PS3 is in good condition you should get back more than you paid for it elsewhere. On HotUKDeals you'll have to aim at the original R.R.P as your maximum price.

Good luck.
