Because Microsoft are having to discount their models to make them more attractive before "LittleBigPlanet" is released for the PS3 & Sony clean-up the market with everybody else who is still undecided what to do this Christmas.
The price of the console is relatively low compared to the ongoing costs of software titles & online subscription rates, anyway. As well as monthly online account charges, and discounting hard drive capacity & the ability to play Blu-ray movies, the Xbox consoles also require the purchase of a wireless adapter to make them comparable with the Sony console(s).
By the middle to end of next year Microsoft will be talking about the next model of their console, so I expect that they are trying to get another festive season's worth of sales before this happens.
Dropping the price in times of low disposable income is a good strategy... but Sony are of the mindset that their console is worth the asking price as, save for the costs of game titles, no further costs are required thereafter.

With Quid at 1.5% this is a discount of £4.65.
In comparison, Play.com are offering an 80Gb PS3 with "LittleBigPlanet" (effectively 'free') for £299.99.
Quidco at Play.com is just 1%.

I reckon its because the ps3 works. I had 3 xbox 360 in 1 month and they all had the RRD. I wouldnt even pay the £130 asking price infact i wouldnt have one if they gave it away

I dont think its that they have forgotton about recession, its just a different business model - Microsoft are all about the add-ons ie their own special double price hard drive, and play and charge kit (come on just give me a USB port!) Wifi adaptor etc, so they make the money back that way. I also dont think Little Big Planet will change much, its fun, but the 360 has so many games available, one game wont make any difference IMHO.
Of course the PS3 has a quiet Bluray drive as well, but the back catalogue of games for 360 is fantastic. I sold my 360 recently, but will pick another one up when they bring out a slim model, I just couldnt stand the noise from mine, sounded like Henry the Hoover, certainly couldnt watch DVDs on it without running a cable from another room. Not sure why they didnt design something quieter like the PS3, guess it was rushed.

This does seem a better deal. Not sure why it isn't listed on hotukdeals any more, obviously removed by someone...very sinister :whistling:
