Absolutely brilliant deal if you are able to get it, especially the Little Big Planet + Extra controller bundle!!
#2
Do you know if they had many instock at that store, since may take a stroll down there tomorrow?
banned#3
What was wrong with the slims you've had/seen OP?
#4
damn litterally just bought one off ebay a couple days ago for around the same price, heat added!
#5
Will check tomorrow and buy - too good a deal to miss!
#6
You must of had a one in a million slim then. They are nothing but quiet whirring beasts :-D

Where as the fat PS3 is like an elephant blowing its trumpet for 5 minutes every 15 mins or so.
#7
got a 250gb slim for £260 odd on the amazon deal (games and all included) my fat 80gb is in the bedroom now and is still loved but its fans were giving it hellfire in its old video cabinet were the 250gb slim sits quietly as if its not even there.
#8
Been looking at getting a PS3 recently.
If I can find any in Preston tomorrow, I'll own all 3 current gen consoles. YAY :-D
Hot hot hot!

Not sure what Phat you had, but mines super silent, as is the slim.

My xbox on the other hand, thats another story

Err guys, at what point did the OP say the slim was noisy?!

I think it's implied that the OP had one die on them? I've not heard many death stories of slims myself. From what I gather they're more reliable than the old ones.

Hot, but I can't imagine there's that much left.

I've noticed that wherever you go that's all people seem to post whenever someone claims that some PS3s are noisy, it's like any criticism of the console has to be countered with a criticism of the Xbox ;-)

Anyway my 40GB phat got so noisy during gameplay I thought it was broken, even opened it up replaced the thermal paste just to be sure. After playing with a friends one and doing some research it just seems that many 40/60GB were just noisy and before anyone asks no I didn't wrap it up in cling film and put it in a locked cabinet..

Anyway great price, I'm really tempted to get an 80GB hope god it's not store specific, although it will be. Voted hot!
#12
i'll refrain from voting because most of these deals are store specific. come to think about it most deals posted here are store specific.

got a sku number for it, i'll try my local asda in the morning and if they have one then i will vote hot. otherwise it looks like a clearance since it is the old fat version
#13
No..all he means is that many people like the shiny look instead of matt. but a bigger hd for a little more money makes the slim a winner for me. I will be looking at the screen when playing games, so only thing that can affect my playing is any noise..which the slim dont make.
#14
also the 120gig ps3 slims were going for £199 a while back in sainsburys and costco so it really isn't that much of a bargain, unless you want a ps2 backward compatible machine.
#15
this price has been mentioned several times, and as such i'd be surprised if there's any more than 1 or 2 stores with any stock - i know that my local havent got any, and havent for a while!

Basically end of line stock.... Good luck in finding one since these were all exhausted last time... ;)
#16
A per my original post I don't know how widespread it is. I agree it's end of line so expect it to be limited. In store (Pipps Hill) they had a few of their on-shelf boxes, may be 5-10. Strangely they used to sell just the slims, though never advertised the 250Gb. My first 120Gb slim came from this store just after Christmas and when I returned it a couple of weeks later they had none, and haven't since.

Slim v Fat
I prefer the looks of the slim, but my preference is mainly down to noise. Previously I had a 40Gb fat and that was wonderfully quiet. It suffered the YLOD after 20 months so I took the opportunity to 'upgrade' to the slim. I returned my first 120Gb due the noise and though my 250Gb is slightly better (just) it still can be irritatingly when watching blurays and tv. It seems pot luck whether you'll get a good one.
#17
I own both the slim and the phat versions. They are both as quite as each other, I also have an xbox, dont get me started on the noise with that but thats a different story for a different thread!

VOTED HOT for anyone that manages to get it.

But anyone working on the PS2 basis should observe teh detail here:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

Only earlier PS2 80GB Phats were PS2 compatible, the later ones like my 40GB weren't.

makes no sense whatsoever! even if you meant 80gb ps3 phats then its still nonsense! :w00t:
#21
Finally a sensible price for this console. I'll be picking one up if my local has one.

Only the early SIXTY gb PS3's were backwards compatible - NOT this one :?
#23
You can't buy new backwards compatible machines any more. Simple as that. The exceptions to that rule are so slight its not even worth your time typing them.
#24
Great deal if you can find one left. Hotter than the innards of an xbox! :p
#25
As as already been mentioned,it was the original 60gig launch model that was mostly backwards compatible with PS2 games.

However,it is now pretty much a known fact that these models (60 gig) are very unreliable and suffer from the "traffic light of death" and/or blu-ray drive failure. This was highlighted when BBC tv covered the issue on their consumer show Watchdog.I also speak from experience because my own 60 gig machine stopped reading disks after appoximately 18 months (out of warranty).

Anyway, back on topic, this is a cracking deal and I have one myself which is far quieter than the Slim which we have downstairs.
#26
Great deal if you are just after the console itself.

As the noise debate i have an 80GB Phat PS3 and dont find it noisy at all, my laptop it louder (when the fans kick in)
#27
Smoking if your lucky enough to grab one. Remember you can do other interesting things with the phats too.

I think your fans must have been broken then mate, as the old system was designed so badly that it shut off the fans completely during gaming unroll enough heat built up, then BAM! you have a jet engine in your room.

The xbox is disgracefully loud if you don't install to hdd, and even when a game is installed the fans are 10x louder than the slim xD

Again, they weren't. The fans are quiet for the first 15 mins or so of gameplay, and after that you can't shut them up. Unless you live in a freezer of course.

well I aint making it up. My 80gb is near silent even after hours of gaming. Same for my mates one too.
#31
My 80gb is quite loud when accessing the disk, but quiet otherwise. Annoyingly, the PS3 often accesses the disk when the disk is not even in use (ie - playing a film off the hard drive). I find that ejecting the game disk from the drive stops the noise.
I wonder if reports of loud fans are actually due to disk access?
#32
So - has anyone other than the OP actually found one of these??? :D

My 60gb is fairly loud, but the projector drowns it out even more :-D the xbox is actually rather quiet, so long as you install to HDD which is fine by me.
I have to say our slim is definately quieter than the 80gb it replaced, but still no where near silent.

To defend the 60gb somewhat (whilst touching a huge plank of wood!) - mine is over 2 years old, and still plays flawlessly, blu ray, ps3, ps2, ps1. It's certainly the loudest model out there, and I realise its only a matter of time till it dies - but I've been very happy with its performance and for me at least the upscaling of ps2 games is still worth any negatvies alone.

I guess it must really vary then, as my slim is next to silent all the time, even when its raping the disc during a game. My mates fat ps3 was also noisy as hell when the fans kicked in.

Just rang Preston Fulwood and Preston Clayton Green, both said they haven't had any in for ages.
Hrrmm, oh well :(
#36
Just called about 5 different stores in and arround london. Nothing :x
#37
The main advantage of this over the slim is that hopefully sooner than later you will be able to run homebrew software on it! :w00t:
Geohot (Jailbreaker of iPhone) is one step closer to hacking it although they still got a long way to go. This can't be done on slim because you can't run linux on it.

oh yeah as for noise the slims have a higher pitched fan noise than phat, so they are more audible.

#38
the main advantage of the slim is that they run a lot cooler than other models which run very hot and end up with broken solder eg yellow light of death, its exactly the reason mine packed up,the repair guys who had fixed 1000S said px for the slimline line asap!

Bad video, doesnt show the PS3 fat with fans at full power, same with the slim.
