I've fed up with juggling music, video and game downloads on my PS3 40GB hard drive, decide to order this before Fallout 3 DLC is available.

Type Hard drive - internal
Form Factor 2.5" x 1/8H
Dimensions (WxDxH) 7 cm x 10 cm x 9.5 mm
Weight 117 g
Capacity 500 GB
Interface Type Serial ATA-300
Data Transfer Rate 300 MBps
Spindle Speed 5400 rpm
Buffer Size 8 MB
Manufacturer Warranty 3 years warranty

Choose within 5 days for free delivery

PS: I know people might be worried about this is a SATA II rather than a SATA. Although PS3 won't benefit from enhanced data rate from SATA II, it should work well as an ordinary SATA hard drive. The reviews confirm this too.

Western Digital 500GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache - OEM Scorpio Blue

the 500gb drives are starting to fall to nice prices now. i got a couple at the £71 mark a few weeks ago so my laptop has a terrabyte internal storage. only about a year ago they were about the £150 mark each. i use my laptop as my data backup of my main pc so my backups can be more use than sitting on a drive doing nothing and i can take it anywhere. with 1TB 3.5" drives at the £50 mark and 1.5tb around £90 it's pretty cheap for a lot of data. shame the 2TB drives are still about £200 though, they need to drop by at least £50 to become better VFM

Just caculated that this 500GB hard drive makes a nice£0.13014/GB, compare to the 320GB on sold on Amazon for £44.99, which gives £0.14059375/GB

£65.07/500 = 0.13
£49.99/320 = 0.14

Took me less than 10 seconds. You must be living your life at BREAKNECK speed to not be able to give up 10 seconds........

Upgraded mine a while back. Be sure to keep hold of the original hard drive, incase things go wrong you can switch back before sending it back to Sony.
Be extra careful when unscrewing the original hd, they can be tough to get out. I had to get a new screwdriver that fit snuggly to get the job done. Google for tips if you have difficulty. Remember this - push down hard on the screw while unscrewing to stop it slipping out.

Can you ftp files to your hd like mp3 and avi and run it straight off the HD?

Under System settings there is a option to back up ur existing files and saved games to a external hard drive.

Edit: When you have installed the new hard drive you simply connect the external hard drive in which you backed up your PS3 save files and media and restore it onto the new hard drive.

I've upgraded from a 60gb (yay a PS3 that plays PS2 games) to a 320gb and its the best investment I've made espacially if you have Play TV.

Im not sure what your asking here, but if you want to play media off your home computer to your PS3 which is connected to your TV then download TVersity, as you can also transfer files to your PC to your PS3 easily through it.

It is very easy to swap the drives over - just make sure you use the correct screwdriver to take out the blue screw (or you are going to shred it) - and allow aside some time for the PS3 to back up/reinstate your data.

Nice easy guide here:

Yeah that's what I meant, but how do you transfer the PS3 OS over to the new HD?

Think i'll have to upgrade my laptop soon with drives coming down to these prices :-)

Added Manufacturer to the description, might want to add it to the title ;-)

PS3 so wasteful with installation crap. They need to sort that rubbish out - somehow

actually installation is a good thing because it will prolongue the life of your ps3. i have had xboxes, ps2, dvd players and dvd writers all failed on me and one thing they all had in common was the laser.

installation by definition is the caching of data that is frquently used by the game. a 4 gig installation will mean that that 4gig of data will be read from the hard drive instead of the dvd player on a regular basis. this is a good thing. even aaroon greenberg of microsoft said that one of the reasons they introduce game install for the xbox was to increase reliability.

The PS3 OS is stored on internal flash memory (1GB) - not on the HD. You are only wanting to transfer over your game data/media/downloaded games/save data when you swap drives - the OS, user information, settings and trophy info is all kept on the flash memory, and does not leave the system.

Have a spare FAT32 formatted external HD ready for use during the transfer - plug in your spare drive and run the PS3 backup utility. Swap in your new HD, let the PS3 do its thing, then restore your old stuff from your spare drive using the back up utility again. Job done.

Tip: If are are struggling to format a large external drive to FAT32 on Windows, use something like Swissknife v3 (worked for me)

You mean like how the xbox 360 has only 13gb out of the 20gb hard drive after formatting or how a computer loses space after a hard drive formatting? :?

Sorry to be picky, but the trophy information is kept on Sony's servers up until the point where you last synced. So providing you link your PSN account, the trophy information is automatically sorted out. There's no risk whatsoever of loosing your trophies (up until your last synced them).

It looks good too when you add DVD covers and album art.
Mind you, you don't need a big HD if you use this:?

You need a big hard drive just for games these days, installs are about 2 to 6 gig each, demos are 1 gig plus. Plus you can't stream for custom soundtracks in games, it has to be on the hard drive.

How does this compare to the WD3200BEVT? Is this (WD5000BEVT) the same but just the next size up?

Totally agree on your point about the need for a big hard drive. I think you might be right about these two hard drives. However, there is a review here about this 500GB drive, have a look.

no the reason why xbox 360 doesn't need it is because the ram is much more superior. PS3 just can't handle textures on the fly like that so it needs to install it. Simplz
