Sony PlayStation 3 PS3 Console with 80GB HDD
PS3 is the most advanced computer system that serves as a platform to enjoy next generation computer entertainment contents in the home, realised through the combination of Cell and RSX processors. Having Giga-bit Ethernet and a pre-installed hard disk drive (HDD) as standard in PS3, users will be able to download a variety of contents as well as access on-line games and services over the network.

Equipped with basic input/output ports, PS3 supports a broad range of displays from conventional NTSC/PAL standard TVs to the latest full HD (1080i/1080p) flat panel displays, offering the joy of the most advanced computer entertainment contents to homes around the world. For use in living rooms, maximum heat and noise reduction has been achieved with a noise level equivalent to that of the current slim-line PlayStation 2. With the overwhelming computational power of the Cell processor, PS3 is capable of playing back content from Blu-ray (BD) disc at a bit rate of multiplex 48Mbps with ease, the maximum bit rate defined in BD standards.

I got my slim for £199.99 new so tempted to vote this cold, but will leave it as people may prefer the fat PS3

Shiny or skinny lol;-)

I had one of these just before Christmas (£199 from Comet with LBP), but was much happier that I managed to exchange it for a slim 250GB. You're right they dont have the shiny finish, but the old model just looks huge next to the slim which isn't exactly small. Haven't voted either way as I'm sure some people would like a PS3 for sub £200 but for a few quid more ...
#7
Seems a good deal to me.
Anyone buying a PS3 should consider an extended warranty or check how
helpful the retailer is.
My son's broke after about 14 months and Sony weren't interested in helping
(apart from £99 for a repair)

Luckily we'd bought it from Game and they were willing to repair it for free.
I assume this relates to things having to last a reasonable time and they can't
wash their hands just because it's outside the warranty.

If you look around the web the PS3 seems a lot more reliable than the
360 but it can have problems with the DVD/BR breaking.
I should also mention the machine did get used a heck of a lot.

You should have tried Game in the first place, it has got nothing to do with Sony.

At least 40Gb more is available in the smaller capacity "Slim", but the "Phat" 80Gb model does offer the facility to install a (new/different) operating system (Linux) that the slim models (120Gb & 250Gb) do not.

Nice to see they are falling in price fast. I think I will give it another 12 months, what do you reckon the price will be then?
banned#18
Cost you a grand in 12 months, it will be retro though..
#19
Why has someone expired this?
#20
Because it is no longer as advertised.... it's not under £200 anymore mate.

still a reasonable price. I personally would rather spend the extra £20 and get the slim.

What annoys me is not that it has only 2 ports but the fact they put them BOTH at the FRONT...

You can always buy a USB hub & run that to the back of the console so you only have one lead in sight.

Depends on preference. I'd rather have a small QUIET PS3 over a fingerprint magnet vacuum cleaner.

The old PS3s are a bit like modern day kids, fat and noisy :whistling:

Unless you have an original PS3 with the memory card slots hidden beneath the hinged flap on the left of the console, why do you ever need to touch the case of a PS3 to leave fingerprints?

The new PS3s are a bit like old grumpy adults; dull & looking for an excuse to not exert any unnecessary energy ;)

you need to do some research my friend the old fat ones were shown on various sites eg watchdog bbc1 to have overheating problems resulting in ylod ,very common fault but sony would not admit to any design fault, the new ones are designed to run a lot cooler to eliminate this problem ,i asked the experts who repaired my old phat one what to do if it happens again ,reply sell it or exchange asap for the slimline one! it may not look as good but its there to perform not look at

Which "experts" did you use to repair your console?

Arguably the overheating issues with both the Xbox 360 ("Red Ring Of Death") & the PS3 ("Yellow Light Of Death") is due to the new regulations regarding the use of lead in the electronics industry.

As lead-free solder is now used in the manufacture of the consoles, when they get hot during excessive/prolonged periods of use, the solder softens & this can eventually lead to gaps/breaks in connectivity between components.

60GB systems had a high fail rate, my mate was unlucky enough to have his fail inthe first week. 40GB/ 80GB were stable but overheat alot and are beginning to show problems now, whilst better than the 60GB, are in my opinion still poor.

I had a 40gb and was instructed that I must update, did so and it damaged my console. I understand that due to the eliment of chance, it's possible that this could happen, however, after reading online it would apear that this problem is more severe than that.

Some people have been even more unlicky than my friend, have had a console killed by updating, they've managed to get it replaced, only for the new one to be killed by the same update, now that has to be rare.

While alot of consoles are working after updating, it is Sonys attitude that has most concerned me. They have insisted that people pay £150 to ahev there console repaired, and have denied that any problem exists, despite all of the posts regarding it on their on forums.

Being 18 technically doesnt mean I'm an adult nor a Kid ;)

Whats up with the cheap plastic chrome on the front of the old PS3s anyway? At least Microsoft use actual metal instead of plastic, jeez.

Before I start a new argument, yes I concede that 360's (apart from the controller) look cheap and still use old dvd drives. Oh to hell with it either way I'm gonna end up starting an argument! :?

Like I originally said its about preference. I dont care so much about looks of a console over how it actually runs. The old fat PS3s were only quiet when not under heavy load i.e. playing games. I had to triple the volume levels to hear anything from my TV or headphones everytime the fans kicked in (every 10 mins or so). It was like someone turned on the hoover. The slim is a constant quiet whurr (like an installed game running on a 360), which is better than a bit of tacky oversized piece of shiny plastic any day for me

lol 10 mins.......your funny.
"it was like someone turned on the hoover" ahahaha even funnier.

take your 'fact' to a website with dumb people, its not gonna work here.

its been proven time and time again that xbox is louder then ps3.

i love it how its all of a sudden a matter of "preference" when the facts go against xbox. normally wii fanboys use the 'preference' excuse but now xbots too?

just like you said, i also didnt want to start an arguement but i just had to looking at the comment you wrote......

i agree my 360 sounds more like a jet engine compared to my Phat PS3.

i had an old £300 20Gb 360 (non HDMI) and that RROD twice, once when id got in from the midnight launch of WaW. as far as im concerned the PS3 is a much better build than any 360 end of!!

i paid £300 a year ago for my phat and think the style of it matches my TV real nice....

going to vote hot, good console, good games (LBP,UC2) and a wonderful media center (x264), but if your a gamer get a 360

sorry i couldn't resist... :p

Have you ever installed a game to the xbox HDD? No, didnt think so. Thats what i was stating. Try READING my comment before talking crap. Fact is, when the game is read off the HDD the console is virtually silent, as the DVD drive is powered down whilst gaming. The older PS3 models had a poor cooling system. It basically let heat build up to such a point that it had to shoot the speed of the fans up to cool it down, and like I said, every 10 mins or so, unless you live in your freezer.

And you call me a fanboy? My xbox has been sitting in the corner for the last 3 months. I make one little comparison to the 360 (which you failed to read properly) and then bitch about it like some little 10 year old faggot. This is also coming from a guy with a PSN logo for his avatar and has posted numerous 'fanboy' comments/accusations across HUKD... n1.

Do some research little boy, and maybe learn to read more often? :whistling:

Like I said in the post above, it depends on if you actually know what features are available on the console, which a lot of people dont. If you want to go as far as comparing the two consoles, a game running off the 360 HDD is actually quieter than any other console. Then again if you only have a 20gb HDD, unlucky you

...says the self-confessed 18 year old who hasn't reached adulthood yet :)

If we all tried to have a discussion as adults without any name-calling by disrespecting other people's reasons for their preferred video games console then we all may learn something.

Tolerance, probably.

Has anybody considered asking for this thread to be unexpired considering the comment by DweebDude above?

When someone brings me down to that level, I might as well go for it. Although to be quite honest I'm disappointed in myself, arguing with a sexually frustrated PS3 lover over the internet. But there's not a lot to do at 12am...

I forgot to ask about the deal still being active, must have got caught up in something else... ;-)

the experts who have 100S of positive feedback in manchester google ps3 repairs mcr and they are there, you are right about the solder but a company as big as sony should either be able to own up to the faults and repair the faulty ones, why bring a cooler running model out if the originals were fine?
