I guess everyone is selling these off cheap to make way for the PS3 Slim now.

I think they should be 'selling them off' cheaper than this considering you get a free game from HMV for the slim @ 249.99

why would you say that? technically the ps3 phat is worth more (due to its components being more expensive at the time). plus there seems to be a rush on for some people to get a non-slim version before they go for good.

worth more due to its components being more expensive at the time? rubbish! The new one is smaller, cheaper to run and does the same thing. £200 for the old one would be a deal, but not £240

:? Don't get it?

Have you compared DDR to DDR 2 lately?!?

You can't run Linux on the Slim and you can't actually switch the machine off, only in to "Stand-By" (unless you just flick the switch on the mains of course). It also lacks 2 USB ports and PS2 compatability vs the 80GB PS3. I'd go as far as to say the PS3 'Slim' is the worst value PS3 Sony have put out.

To me running Linux on the machine was a significant boon in terms of value, it gives you yet another PC in the house and a huge library of extra (free) software that can be run.

not quite the same comparison. I have the 60GB launch model, which is worth more because its rare. There will be a demand for original PS3's once supply dries up, thats my view anyway.

It's fact that in order to create a lower-priced PS3 they had to use cheaper parts to manufacture.

No, no, and no. The 80GB PS3 (featured in this deal atleast) does NOT feature 4 USB ports - it has just two, like the newly announced Slim. It doesn't have PS2 compatibility either - by software OR hardware emulation. Buy a hub and keep your old PS2 plugged in if you're so bothered. I don't get it - Sony stated backwards compatibility was out when they released the newer ('fat') PS3 models some time ago - why didn't all the nostalgic PS2 format users rush out and buy them then? Like you'd want to play Shadow of the Colossal on a 'HD' television anyway, you'd vomit at it's graphics, abilities and capabilities in comparison into the machine you could actually be using to it's potential. The 40GB PS3 is the only one which has real value at the moment due to it's media options (and backwards compatibility) - it has more USB ports and a few media card readers.

Oh, and as if the average consumer will want to install Linux. I doubt they know it exists, and I doubt you even installed it. Sony made the Slim to appeal to the market (in terms of pricing and features), not just the fanboys and media center snobs. It was removed because it just isn't possible on the new hardware.

Anyway, I'm picking up a Slim on 1/9 due to upgraditis.
