Instead of dropping the PS3 price in the UK, Sony has dedcided to create a new bundle to rival the 360 Pre + 2games.

PS3, extra controller, and 2 games from a selection of Sony Developed ones. Eg Resistance & Motorstorm.

This deal should go live by the weekend of 20/7/07 in Game i think. In my Store at least we've been suggesting to customers to come back next weekend for this very fact.

Not sure if this is just with Game, but who knows.

P.s Dont forget quidco and Reward points (£10 min)

This is the standard price change for EU as far as I'm aware.

Anybody whose missed this has been living in a bubble.

Frankly with the price of the ps3 well below £300 in the usa and japan the european/uk price is an absolute joke. They even get a full emotion chip for backwards compatibility in the 60gig model. The current amazon.com price is $500 (i.e. £250 approx) and includes a full playstation 3 remote control and six!!!! blu-ray movies. I'd be happy to pay £299 for our lower spec model without the blu-ray discs or additional remote or games but even that is poor value compared to the usa/japan. At current prices the ps3 is best avoided in the uk.

Yeah, sadly so especially since they are region-free once you get the unit you can buy games here as normal. So far they seem fine for reliability so there's no real warranty issues either.

I have no interest in a PS3 for now but tempted to pick one up a US 60GB model up while they still have the EE as once that model is gone it may well be gone forever.

Yeah I wish I knew someone going to the states to pick me up a ps3 but sadly I don't so will have to play the waiting game until european pricing is more reasonable. I'm guessing Sony are going to have a pretty terrible christmas and so the new year will probably bring a big price cut even if its retailers chopping their margins to the limit just to get shot of them.

I'd really like full backwards compatibility so I'm quite keen on a usa ps3 though with emotion chip. I'm not keen on sony copying microsoft's approach with partial and less robust software emulation.

Might be worth considering going to New York to buy your PS3
http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/specialoffers/specialofferstotheusineconomy.jsp

Flights from £240
PS3 (US) £250
Total: £490
Consider it as a holiday to NY for only £65 extra :)
#8
You gotta pay new york tax ontop of that and maybe import tax

Nott if you buy it at the Airport.

Hey man i might be wrong but i thought the ps3 is still region locked if your trying to play pal ps2 games on a usa ps3, therefore you would need to pick of usa ntsc ps2 games aswell

Who plays ps2 games anymore

Why on earth would anyone buy a next gen console and play old games? I know people have collections of old games for their old consoles, but surely it makes more sense to flog em and buy the new stuff?

Why buy a Ferrari and only drive it at 30 miles per hour?

I have a US PS3 and not once have I thought of running a PS2 game on it

Not really an accurate analogy, it's more like buying a new Ferrari but wanting to keep your classic Ferrari and use it from time to time. The older one may not be as fast but that doesn't mean it's useless, some of the most beautiful Ferraris are the older ones.

There are games I still play on the PS2 that are great games, graphics aren't everything - I've just ordered Global Defence Force which has a poor framerate and graphics for the PS2 but looks a superb game (predecessor to Earth Defence Force 2017/3). Also gone back to Ace Combat Zero after playing the new demo (which isn't out until the end of the year) and a bit of Katamari plus there's some great shooters which I don't think are ever getting a sequel on the newer systems (R-type Final/Gradius V)

Do you only play new games or good games, Id be amazed if you have played through all the amazing PS2 games available.
#16
I don't know why this is such a cold deal, considering the 2 games must be worth at least £30 each, so that's £365 for the console and after the cashback and reward points, it would be about £355.

Don't forget that if Game is selling it at that price already, that means it's the rrp price, so you'll be able to get an even better deal.

Also, the PS2 had quite a lot of quality games whereas the PS3 only has a handful of decent to worth owning games and gaming isn't all about graphics, it's about the gameplay........ surely the Wii has taught some of you that?

I'll admit I'm probably in the miniority but yeah if I had a ps3 I would want to play my ps2 and ps1 games on it which I still have. However thinking about it a usa ps3 is no good to me as ps2/ps1 games are still region locked and mine are all uk games. Sometimes I just want to play an older game rather than a new one. However it looks like I'll have to wait a long time before the uk price is palettable.

its cold because it is the standard price now so not a HOT deal!

Fair enough then. Personally, I've completed all of my ps2 games some time ago, and then bought an xbox 360 so I've been playing on that. Generally once I've completed something (on hard) I tend not to go back.

That said I'm also working through my World of Warcraft addiction right now, so my console play is much reduced.
#22
cold as the offer is not even on yet.
#23
I wish amazon USA would deliver to the UK. PS3 + 6 blue-ray movies (1 free with pack + 5 from rebate) + bluetooth remote for £250
#24
I don't know why this is such a cold deal ..... so that's £365 for the console

See if you can guess - the £365 for the console might be a bit of a clue.
We're being ripped off by Sony. They just announced a further $100 discount in the US (which is already cheaper than ours) but there will be no price reductions in Europe. I refuse to be conned by them - I'm sticking with my 360 now.
#25
The $100 off is to get rid of the 60gig stock. As soon as they are gone, the 80gig will be avail at the same price [$600] - so is only a temp price drop.

Exactly, i dont think we are getting such a bad deal, if you think about it the only reason the PS3 seems to cheap in the US is cause of the strong pound/weak dollar, and then once you stick on VAT and DUTY the prices add up.

So they will still be paying less for the 80Gb version than we pay for the 60Gb version, wow, what a billy bob bargain.

But its not about the single price of the console its about the cost of living, everything to us seems cheap in america, their Minimum wage on average (amongst states) is $8.00 an hour, ours works out at about $10.

The price of a CD in america.. Icky thump (white stripes) $9.99
The price of a CD in the UK... Icky thump (white stripes) $18.00 (£8.98)

Both of those were from their respective amazon sites.

And if you were to order one from america..

$599+$60 shipping (average) is at todays exchange £323 so with vat its £379 (plus the £12 parcelforce clearance fee)

So to have it delivered from the US its £392 with no games or controllers.

I would prefer to pay the extra and get 2 games and a controller, who cares about an extra 20gb harddrive? U can fit one yourself....

I don't know why this is such a cold deal

It's not a hot deal as this bundle is now standard, voting hot for RRP isn't the point of this website.

But i feel it was more of a "heads up" than anything, as it would warn off people looking to buy a PS3 at the full price and waiting a few extra days, as the new bundle wasn't common knowledge to everyone.

I bet there'll be loads of PS3 deals using all there combined vouchers in the next couple weeks. ;-)

surely it would be warm then

As an aside on the PS3 itself:

PS3 is fine by me - excellent media centre, couple of excellent games(Ninja Gaiden sigma :)), HD dvd player.... I was happy to pay £350 for it. I don't need thousands of games as I lead a normal life as opposed to sitting in front of my tv for hours on end. And as I've got a similarly minded flat mate, we share the cost of these things. Diagnosis - top notch... We've also just got a Wii for those after the pub moments. All bases covered.

Surely with the Virgin student deal or the Credit card deal this will work out very well, or are those not available anymore?
