Very.
Its a great little device, I have one already but at this price I might pick up a spare.

Whatever you do though, if you buy to use with your PS3 don't upgrade the PlayTV software to 2.02 as it effectively breaks the system and to get it working again yo have to reinstall and lose all recording in process...
I suppose you could upgrade if you systematically exported every recording to the main PS3 menu.

Anyone get it working with XP?

But if you buy this and don't have any existing recordings, what difference does it make if you upgrade?

Thanks

This is a cracking piece of kit, paid £28 pre owned a few weeks ago

Very good price. I bought from Tesco couple of weeks ago for £32.70, and even that was a bargain, so this is even better if its in stock.

Two questions for those more knowledgeable:

1 - I take it I can only record this when the TV is on and the channel is selected?
2 - If and when is the HD version of this out?

Thanks!
#10
Is there an HD version of this out?
Do you need the TV on when recording?

I am waiting for the HD version to come out at some point - but i wouldn't count your chickens, i've been waiting since last year when FreeviewHD was announced.

Still £29.99 is probably the lowest price you can get this for...

TV does not need to be switched on when recording as the freeview box is connect via USB to your ps3 - your PS3 will be running in the background.

Hi I am not great with things like this but do you need a aerial point for one of these? Have a TV in bedroom for ps3/dvd player but no aeriel point

1 - Nope, you just need the aerial cable plugged into the PlayTV box, and the power on to your PS3 and you can schedule recordings all day long and it'll record them by itself.
You can record a channel while you are watching it as well, and also you can pause and rewind TV. I already have on hooked into my PS3 and I can say for sure that the above all work.
It's basically Sky Plus/TiVo.
2 - No schedule for HD to come out in the UK because HD works using a DVB-T2 Tuner and PlayTV only uses DVB-T.
They'd need to release new hardware, and Sony haven't announced anything yet :(

At this price, I'm definitely picking one up after work to connect to my PC!

^^ How do/can you connect it to PC?

It's called "PlayTV", not "PS3 Go Play"... you dope.

And yes, the v2.02 update can cause your PlayTV to fail at any time after installing. You must reinstall to fix, losing your recordings.

No fix as yet from Sony.

Aeron Vincci better wait for the HD.

Does anyone know if there is anything similar out there for the Xbox?

I wish, but nope. It was one of the reasons why I bought a PS3. Much better hardware than XBox 360, but games are far better on the XBox IMO.

Got this boxed for £35 a month ago, and I already believe I've got my money's worth of recordings. HOT indeed!

I have a normal aerial on my tv that I use the ps3 on. But I receive a bad picture on normal fta channels.

Is there any point in me getting this then?
#21
You wont get a HD version till at least 2012/2013.

It would be pointless for Sony to release one when almost nowhere in the country can currently receive HD broadcasts.
#22
What does the update to the software (the one that can break it) actually do? Any new features or is just that paid for crappy update that does social networking or something?

BTW, awesome bit of kit. It's what I use my PS3 for mainly.
#23
good deal, about to go pick one up now

Using this PlayTV box won't improve your reception i am afraid - so if you already have a bad picture signal (e.g. pictures cuts out every so often...) then this won't be much better due to signal strength in your area.
#25
btw a question for someone who already has this, is there an upgrade you have to pay for with this, also is it possible to upgrade to 2.01 for free, avoiding the from what i hear the disastrous 2.02?

I wouldn't say its pointless .... there's a lot of ppl out there who already can receive HD....

plus, doesn't hurt to have it ready for those who don't, and have them watch freeview whilst waiting for HD to be switched on.

All software upgrades on the PS3 (software/hardware) are free..... you just need to pay for your internet (that you should already be paying monthly to your ISP)
#28
Not knowing of any issues I recently upgraded to 2.02. Had no problems and my HDD content was still all there in the Play TV menu. If you haven't got a sky or cable + box then this is the nuts.

Sorry, there is an update for PlayTV that you have to pay for, it allows series link and something to do with messaging whilst watching. Not bought it myself as dont feel the need to, but otherwiseits an awesome peice of kit, especially as I can watch stuff on my PSP in the bath!!!

Can you please explain a little more? How do I record to PC? Do I not need some software of sorts? If so, what do you use? Can you edit your recorded stuff?

why are people banging on about HD channels and they want to wait for the Play TV hd version, the hd channels suck lol: BBC1 HD, BBC HD, ITV HD, C4 HD. Wow lots of choice on the freeview platform. Play tv is fine :)

He isn't a dope, he's called it that as that's what Argos have called it. No doubt a cut & paste job. It's Argos who are dopey X) but this is a great price & I've ordered one as I've been waiting for PlayTv to become cheaper after upgrading the PS3 HDD to 500 GB.

As for the latest upgrade it seems it's completely broke. No idea why Sony have taken so long to fix it. Why are they offering an upgrade to it if they know it's broke?

There's no HD version planned, the rest of Europe has it but the UK uses a different HD standard and Sony never do any favours to the UK market. Just look at the launch date delays & price differences we have the pleasure of enduring.

There's a paid upgrade available for about £7 which give you series recording plus a few other advantages (bit cheaper if you have PSN+).

I've used Play TV for a couple of years & it's great. Latest s/w is gash like.
