PS3 / LAPTOP UPGRADE : 320Gb Western Digital 2.5" SATA Hard Drive - £65.99 Delivered.

Going by other PS3 forum discussions supposedly this is the best hard drive to have if your going to upgrade your PS3.

I can confirm this drive works great in a PS3 as my mate has one in his.

For comparison it's £99.99 delivered @ Play.com !

I recently upgraded my PS3 with the same drive. Used a USB based one as a go between to backup my old 40Gb, then replaced the 40Gb with the 320Gb, and restored the contents from the USB to the 320Gb and all my downloads etc came back as expected!

Just so people know, the drive in the deal isn't PS3 specific. It will work in your SATA based notebook etc as well

Yep ! I was getting carried away with upgrading my 40Gb PS3 .....:-D

My other option was getting this 250Gb Western Digital Passort External drive for £55.50 and swapping the drives so i'd end up with a 40gb external too :

But nobody could confirm exactly what spec the drive was inside the External enclosure to go in the PS3 !

yes its the right size and type, but you need the bits that hold the HD in place in that dell laptop, which dell only supply if you have a second HD - ie. if your laptop only has one HD at the moment you won't have the fittings so will need to get them from dell. if you look in the manual and open the HD compartment for both drives you will see what i mean

Good point.

I currently use XBMC on an old xbox, which i would love to replace (ugly, noisy box), I've been thinking of upgrading my drive in my PS3 with a view to installing linux. Installed yellow dog on my 40Gig drive to give me a taster. Installed ok, but I think it will be a good few years before it'll be in a position to be used as a media center.

Good drive. Got one this week from a dealer via ebay for a few pounds less because I got fed up of waiting for the Samsung M6 500GB, which seems to be only on sale in France. Have some heat.

Fitted the cheaper Fujitsu 320Gb in mine a few weeks ago, working perfectly, 3yr warranty, excellent value.

Is it easy to install on the PS3?

All you need is a scewdriver and some other storage device to backup your current data on to while you switch, external USB HDD, flash drive... memory card (60GB only) etc.

It's as simple as backing up your existing data, taking out some screws... switching the drive... re-inserting said screws.... doing the recovery procedure.

It's extremely straightforward.

P.S Why would you try to use Linux as a media centre? The PS3 is capable of streaming from a Windows machine if you're into that kind of thing.

Incase their computer isn't powerful enough to transcode HD content on the fly, or so that the computer doesn't need to be running as well.

Oh, and because of the likes of XBOX360 becoming the 'updated' XBMC (for the original XBOX) isn't looking good!

The graphics are gimped on any Linux PS3 installation so it wasn't really going to happen anyway, not until Sony provide more access to the hardware or someone manages to break the protection somehow.

As for streaming, if you're doing it with WMP11 then no transcoding takes place it's really only a method of getting the data to the PS3 over a network. When I download something for example in a .mkv container I re-mux the file into a .mpg container (few minutes max) then add it to the WMP library, the PS3 will then see it which will let you either watch or copy it to the HD.

Not wanting to have the computer on is a valid point though which is why I upgraded the HD .

I think it's awesome that you can just upgrade your PS3 memory like this. I wasn't aware you could do that. If only Icould do that with my Xbox!

i suggest if your laptop doesn't hold two drives, get an external caddy and connect the new drive then use software like norton ghost to copy the 40gig drive to the 320gig, then remove the 40gig drive and replace with the 320gig drive. you can essentially copy the old drive to the new one and it looks like the same drive but 320gig isntead of 40gig (ie. you don't have to muck about with partitions). there are other programs you can use instead of ghost

alternatively you can remove the old drive, put in the new one, install windows and programs and then connect the 40gig via a caddy and copy over the data you need, and you don't need ghost or special software to do it. i think svp have cheap caddys about £6ish

If you're talking about transferring data from PS3 all you need to do is
1) Connect an external hard drive or flash drive (provided its large enough) via USB to PS3
2) Go to your PS3 system settings & go to the 'backup' option to backup your data
3) Change your hard drive
4) Transfer your PS3 data back onto the new 320GB harddrive

As simple as that:thumbsup:
