The Sale Of Goods Act states that products should be fit for purpose. If there's a serious issue with something as integral as a laser diode, you could very easily argue your PS3 wasn't fit for its job - even if it's out of warranty. SOGA covers products up to 6 years IIRC but you might have to go to small claims court to action it. It's not automatic.

If it was made in 2009/10 it would still be under warranty.

Bear in mind, most retailers will do and say ANYTHING to get OUT of the SOGA.
#6
But if you go through money claim online and then the small claims courts, I don't see a representative of Sony turning up for the sake of £200 odd quid. Then you'd win by default.
#7
EU law covers you up to 2 years and Sony know this as they offered to sort my mates PS3 if it was under 2 years for free.
#8
my ps3 broke WELL OUTSIDE of warranty and sony replaced it no problem. The way I see it provided you have a regular history of topping up your funds wallet (which i had) it is in their interest to replace anyway ...
#9
Eu / UK laws must be different then as at least 6 years in the UK that the SOGA covers you. It is also not Sony you claim against it is the retailer that sold the unit.

They may well try and do or say anything to squirm out of their legal responsibilities but if people can't be bothered to push for their rights then can you blame them........
#10
I was refering to actual warranty periods.
#11
Actual warranty periods should also be dealt with direct to the retailer not to the manufacturer.

Some manufacturers will be helpful and sort it, lots will point you back to the retailer. Lots and lots of the retailers will try and palm you off to the manufacturer!

Lol - I understand now. Didn't realise a666andy was refering to his PS3 - not the laser.

buy a £200 console, hammer it for 2 years and it breaks down. why bother complaining? no console is bullet proof, ultimately they have to be replaced or manufacturers couldn't survive. all consoles are crap really, what do you expect for the money? they're made with poor components to keep the cost down.

generally, they get well used so parts wear out. obviously its a different story if it breaks down if only a few months old with little use. in that case, yes you can complain. buyers have to be realistic,
#14
lol yea was due to the blurb stating it would fit the 2008 or later PS3 models.

Looking again, how can they only be trying to offer a 3 month warranty with this anyway????????

So i expect you're one of the people that the retailers love lol!

The first PS3 came out at around £450 from memory, if that fails after 2 - 3 years would you really say oh well? Even now at nearly £300 you would reasonably expect it to last a few years minimum! if you paid £40 for a PS2 then agreed, a cheap toy like that would not be expected to last years and years...........
#16
?? dunno what happened with the posts then?? (duplicate post)
#17
sony knew what they were doing at £450. there's always idiots that will pay that at first. even at £600 some numpties would have still bought it. it's just profiteering. if i'd bought one for £300 even and used it repeatedly for 2 years and it broke, i wouldnt be that upset. if i'd hardly used it, i would. i'm sure they could make it with components that last 5 or 10x as long but the console would still be £500 or more.

Are you having a laugh mate?

no, but you might be. how can you compare an atari with dinosaur basic technology with a ps3? do you use an atari everyday now? think there's a lot more to go wrong in a ps3. can't remember a blue ray laser being fitted to an atari. and isnt that what keeps breaking? i have a 20 year old amiga 600 that still works perfect but i don't use it.

Sony say their Playstation 3 platform has a lifespan of 10 years - I'd expect the console to last half of that. (not two or three years).. :whistling:

PS: The image I posted was a generic image taken from some random site - more fool you for takiing it literally.

i qoute, "are you having a laugh mate?" how naive do you want to be? how do you think their sales would be if they said their consoles had a lifespan of 2-3 years? which in reality is what they have. how many ps3's will EVER last 10 years? mmmmmmm......?

To which indeed, you are having a laugh.
#23
no, i'm being realistic.
#24
Just buy an extended warranty, they're only about £70 for 5 years. Then you will have effectively paid £320 for something that WILL last 5 years.
