Hi
Thanks for posting. It is good practice to also add the merchant and price to the title. It helps people who are just browsing through. And in my experience your post will get a few more “hot” votes.
Emmajk42 / Juliet_Bravo wrote a couple of very comprehensive and excellent guides for newcomers to HUKD here: - http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/145906/newcomers-advice-on-hotukdeals-gene/

They are well worth taking a look at.
Kind regards Andy

Good price, I bet these will get cheaper now with Freeview HD coming out soon, will a new version will come out to support that?

Heard rumours that It will be patched into the current hardware.

Have you any links to freeview HD, last time I heard was that HD would take up too much signal or something like that:)

Great news if true.

Yes HD freeview will be available when analogue is turned off in your corresponding region. There are 4 transponders available with 3 currently been taken by BBC, ITV and Channel 4. It is hoped that HD freeview will be available in all regions (not channel islands) by spring 2012.

You may need a new set top box. This is a quote from the Freeview site: -

Viewers who want to watch the new channels will have to buy a new set-top box incorporating the superior MPEG-4 rather than MPEG-2 compression technology. MPEG-4 is twice as efficient as the MPEG-2 standard , while a new European transmission standard (DVB-T2) will increase capacity by 30%. These boxes are still being developed and discussions are taking place on when they will be available to buy in shops.

Indeed this might be the case, if you look at the manual for PlayTV:

http://uk.playstation.com/ps3/hardware/accessories/preview/item102429/TV-the-way-it-should-be/

(Direct .pdf: http://uk.playstation.com/media/121581/805257_MASEA_PLAYTV_ENG_V11.pdf )

It states:

PlayTV Manual
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Interface USB 2.0
Connector USB
Supported MPEG2
Interactive TV MHEG-5
Power consumption Not applicable, powered via USB
Voltage DC 5V – 320mA
Dimensions (approx.) 140mm x 70mm x 39.5mm
Weight (approx.) 113g
USB Cable length (approx.) 1.5m

If so it's a shame for that's a good price for PlayTV if unable to get it at Toys 'R' Us or Argos.

£39.99 @ argos for reserve and collect. this is £5 more

^ If you can find one at argos, then yes, it's a better price. It's been out of stock in my area for over a month now though and this deal is available nationwide. :)

Yeah it all sounds like a con tbh. Surely encoding is software not hardware based.

Freeview HD is due to go live December 1st but I read there won't be any boxes for sale til late Dec

Its about time they integrated this into ps3 motherboard, to start a rumour. :)

Yeah, DVB-T is very relevant to the US and Japanese markets. NOT.
#13
the new dvb-t2 standard is hardware based, meaning that unless the set-top box has the new dvb-t2 chipset in it, it wont work with freeview HD.

at the time of playtv development, there were no dvb-t2 chips in existence, meaning it will not be compatible with freeview HD. a software update will not work.

but playtv, is an excellent bit of kit. well worth the money.

And without anywhere near the same costs :whistling: Most people I know with Sky pay more than this monthly

There are 3 main faults with this:

1. No loop thru for the ariel. Most people have 1 ariel connection in the wall and this will loop thru thing like video recorders to the TV. With Playtv all you get is one which means you cannot then connect the ariel to the TV. You need to buy a splitter with Playtv. Can't believe Sony missed this.

2. Although it was advertised at launch with the ability to rceive HDTV, it wont be able to do this come the start of HD transmisiions this December.

3. You cannot record more than one channel at a time.

Will Sony replace it with a new version?

The extra parts cost no more than a few quid, splitter from main lead then 1 into TV and 1 into PlayTV

It also upscales to HD since the last update. For £39.99 this is an absolute must, even as a spare Freeview recorder.

Splitters are a quid at Asda.

Agreed, though if you use it much you will probably end up like me and have to upgrade the hard drive. WD 500GB works a treat.

My Bad!, I did actually hit expire first, but as it had no effect, I thought I should at least put a line of text on the post to point it out.... if that is the wrong thing to do then I am sorry! - I wont do it again boss! :)
