PS3 Play TV - Instore only (preowned) 99p @ GAME

Went to GAME this afternoon looking for a Play TV device for the PS3 and managed to nab a preowned one for 99p.

This is obviously to shift the dead stock so don't make a special trip there but if your local has one it will scan as 99p.

Ask if they have one first before telling them its 99p.

What is a play tv, never heard of it, and I got a PS3.

Purchased this when it first came out some years ago. £80 what I paid on release and that was well worth it..... so for 99p it's a no brainer!

It's freeview that runs through your ps3, but you can record, pause, save bits to your harddrive, series records. Watch a few vids on YouTube.

I got this in the original PS3 bundle I got years ago, and a very handy wee peripheral it is too. Heat duly added

What a bargain ;)

Apparently this can work with Windows with a bit of fiddling. Could be useful if you want to record Freeview stuff or something on PC.
#7
Got this when it first came out, tbh, I hardly used it
#8
Got a receipt? I'm going to ask my local if this is legit.

I use this every single day!

I paid around £70 for it and and 100% happy with it. The UI is great and being able to play pause record and rewind live TV is great.

Gotta wonder who trades these in. Bet you would get 20p for it trade in if you were lucky!
#11
These are really good I have one for my ps3
#12
Shame that they didn't make a Freesat or even a HD version of this later on, I quite like it, remember using it to record School Of Rock on Channel 5 years ago :)

Still would have been nice to release the PSX here as originally intended but I guess sales in Japan didn't help that :(
#13
Which Game store did you find it in OP?
#14
Also works on PC apparently. So if I see this in my local GAME I will buy it :)
#15
Pssst... Buy it from GAME for 99p, walk to CEX and they'll give you £2 for it or £4 exchange :-)

Not too much fiddling required: http://www.avforums.com/threads/sony-play-tv-with-windows-media-centre-windows-7-experiences-thread.1219177/#post-11785322

I've long since got rid of mine but I've heard that the newer version of the PS3 software either breaks something or requires a chargeable addon. Not sure if you can still install it from the original DVD without upgrading but just something to bear in mind, hopefully someone can clarify.

I bought one years ago for £30, and have used it pretty much every day since.
With my PS3 connected via a splitter to multiple TVs, and the Blue tooth remote working through walls/floors I can pause/record etc. whichever room I'm in.

Hope they produce something similar for PS4, since making PS4 support PlayTV would be too much to ask for when they can screw more money out of you for an almost identical tuner box.

I would hope if they did make another that it would be able to tune into Freeview HD. I might even buy one if that was the case but honestly I'm not sure they will make another.

that means that its probably 50p anywhere else if game are selling it for 99p

does it work on ps4?

Sadly no. It doesn't support HD too in the UK. Still well worth it if you have a PS3 though.

Can be used with Windows Media Centre, for SD freeview recordings.

However you may want to find another program to record through, as WMC creates DRM locked files. So if you wanted to copy the files to other devices or re encode them with Handbrake, you'd run into issues with the WMC files.

great little device with the slickest UI for any TV, STB etc.

The main issues for me was the lack of series record (but you could pay to upgrade!), no HD, and no option for it to quickly load up direct to PlayTV with out faffing with the PS3 menus and load times. They really should launch consoles with these kind of features built in.
#25
Amazing deal if you've got a PS3, only just stopped using mine because of smart TV as old TV stopped working.
You can set to record and turns ps3 on and back off again when done.

No HD channels, but the upscale of all channels is really good and gives excellent picture. Def worth a buy for free view.

I had one of these for my PS3 a few years back, brilliant bit of kit that I used a lot, 99p is ridiculously cheap!
#27
That's a total bargain. Not HD (and almost certainly won't ever be in this country), but works astonishingly well and never skips a beat recording stuff, even when you're gaming! :)
#28
these are brilliant. if you find one snap it up
#29
Not really "brilliant". The software crashes regularly (xmb still works in-app but playtv freezes). Not a rare problem, I use playtv everyday and it happens multiple times.

Check the playstation forums. These have a number of issues that will never be addressed

Sure it's not HDD on its way out? Never had any issues with mine. Though just like PC's, software and hardware can be same on 2 separate computers and one can have issues and other not.
Still excellent for 99p even if you had them issues.

I've used playtv on 3 ps3's over the years, I think problems are linked to the chat upgrade. I've had issues on 2 of these ps3's, one with one hardrive and this current one has had 2. So out of a possible 6 hard drive setups, 3 of them I can confirm there have been problems. A reinstall of the software sometimes sorts it for a bit, but it'll always return

Got mine for about £40 many years ago. Use everyday, it's 10x better than my TV's Freeview, much slicker menus and TV guide and the picture quality for SD is impressive (don't know how they do it).

So has anyone else managed to grab one?

Just nipped into Leeds store to have a look, none in there

With no receipt the question is did you really grab one
#37
It's like having a HDD freeview box with the power of the PS3. Only downside is it doesn't record HD freeview.
#38
Thing I didn't like was the ps3 had to be on drinking electricity to use it even if you were not recording. Never bought it in the end and when freeview hd came out it was pretty useless.

For those asking there was a second generation released which did HD. It was called Nasne and was only released in Japan.
#39
i used to have one of these, it was pretty good really, i seem to think there was some reason why i stopped using it though.
#40
I have this and had to stop using it as it constantly used to have issues, would miss chunks out of the recording and caused my PS3 to crash quite a lot. When it worked, it was brilliant, however over the space of a year I had more problems with it than positives
