Play TV + PlayStation 3 TV Tuner

PlayTV lets you record TV while playing games, and offers live television broadcasts to handheld PSP consoles via the Internet.

With PlayTV, you can watch, pause and record free-to-air digital television while you take a break from gaming, further expanding the entertainment possibilities of the PlayStation 3. The PlayTV Tuner, which plugs into one of the PS3 system's USB ports, is capable of showing and recording both standard and High Definition channels where available, and will allow you to record one channel while watching another. It features a programme guide which lets you view listings and schedule recordings for the following week.

If you have a PSP, you can take all these features with you. As long as you are within range of a Wireless Internet connection, Remote Play enables you to watch live television, access previously recorded programmes and organise your media library.

Good Luck

Good Price, Cheapest i found is £47.99
#2
i know they r on ebay for this amount so good deal
#3
I'm so tempted but having Sky plus i don't see the point.
#4
Good price!

Make sure you have a decent sized hard-drive in the PS3 if you intend to record alot of TV though.
#5
This is the most useless product on the ps3. first of all its FREEVIEW. secondly it takes up a lot of space on your hard drive so those with 40gb may as well forget it.

lastly, they say you can watch one channel and record another which doesnt always work. not to mention theres NOTHING worth watching on freeview. not to mention they say you can play games while recording tv? NO YOU MOSTLY CANNOT. hot deal simply on the merit that its cheaper than anywhere else. (but theres a reason why **** is cheap).

I've heard quite good review from people who've bought this, and this is definitely a good price.

For anyone that has their PS3 in a seperate room to their main TV/Sky/Cable sources, I think it's actually a good idea.
The only reason I haven't bought it yet is I firstly need to spend the 50 quid upgrading my PS3 hard disk, in order to get use out of the Play TV recording facilities as I'm down to about 2GB of free space.

Anyone know if you can record directly to an external hard disk plugged into the PS3??
#7
Great price! Have ordered . Have SkyHD but we do find there are often clashes where 3 programs are needed to be taped and this would help out there as nearly always one of the clashing programs is on a freeview channel.

Already have a 320gb HDD installed and an external 640gb USB drive so can transfer programs to that as well. Not sure if you can record straight to the external drive, but it would be good if you could.

It's a Freeview tuner so what else would you expect it to record?!?!? What a ridiculous statement. Of course it takes up room on your HDD....but when they're cheap what's the problem?

It serves it's purpose so what's your problem?

Erm.....yes you can. The release of this thing was delayed because Sony were ensuring that it could run in the background without impacting game performance.

You don't like PlayTV fine, but don't make up things that are not true.

Madonna I keep seeing your posts on deals talking utter bs. Please think before you put your mouth into gear. Do you really think there is nothing worth recording on Freeview....? And honestly... I'm sure Sony just randomly released a pointless product without any research and careful consideration about how it would be used by the target audience....

You retard. ;-)

I don't think you can record directly to an external hard drive so you'd have to record to the PS3's internal hard drive and then transfer it over to the external hard drive using the XMB.

This is a public forum. I am allowed to givemy opinion. Sony comes out with horrid products all the time. They came out with the ps3 didn't they? Anyhow, what could be a turd to me could very well be gold to you. Its all in the opinion. For example i don't even know you and i already think you are an idiot whereas you may have a very high opinion of yourself. But in my opinon the fact that you have not read up on the cons of this product, not to mention you consider freeview to be good makes you eternally - an idiot.

anyways if my posts don't agree with you please ignore them in the future and dont talk of me or to me.:?

Do you actually own and use one? I've had mine about a month now and love it, beats paying for sky and recording has never let me down yet. I've only got a 40gb drive for now until I upgrade but this isn't really a problem, I've got 20gb free and thats about 10-15 hours of video, more then plenty for me. Recording while playing games and recording shows while watching another show or recording works perfect for me.

Maybe you should try the manual?

Would love to know how these compare as the Panasonic DMR-EX 75 now looks pants on Bravia 40v4000 even though it has HDMI and upscaling options it looks worse than the LCDs built-in tuner.

my friend got one of these from woolies for £14
#19
Can you record series on this?
#20
Are there any firmware updates coming for this that will allow series link? Also the option to allow recording of two channels at once even if it meant I couldn't play games...these two things are preventing me from replacing my trusty Topfield....
#21
Im interested in this, largely for the remote play functionality with the psp. Am I right in thinking you can basically watch your telly from your psp via any wireless hotspot? Can you change channel and also watch recordings? What about the ps3, does it need left perminately on, or can the psp switch it off remotely?

Wikipedia to the rescue...

Mobile TV with PSP: Wi-Fi connectivity with a PlayStation Portable allows for portable viewing of live or recorded television programming. By using the Remote Play feature of the PlayStation 3, owners can use a PlayStation Portable to access their PlayStation 3 console from anywhere in the world via the Internet. The Remote Play feature has the ability to 'wake up' the PlayStation 3 from stand-by mode, allowing the user the ability to watch live TV, set recordings and watch previously recorded content anywhere in the world direct from their PlayStation 3 to their PlayStation Portable via the internet.

This product has gotten great reviews from just about every unbiased source. for what it is (a freeview recorder for the PS3) it works really well.

Fanbois **** me off on this forum such a lot - if there was a better alternative on the X-Box, i could see a reason to post, but lets face it - Madonna is just being a spoilt little brat, a la his name sake.

GazR - +rep for having the balls to come in and not act like a *****. It's so nice to see, i think it deserves to be rewarded.

cracking deal, just wish i had decent aerial reception so i could use something like this.cheers op

Pretty hot...I wouldn't say that it's worth the £70 high street price, but I bought one of these a couple of days ago for about £45 on ebay and I am impressed, it has a very slick interface and there are only a couple of negatives from my point of view: It takes a while to load (from switching the ps3 on to watching TV takes around 50 seconds); also there is no scheduled autoview / reminder function, but hopefully this will be added in a software update.
I'd also like to correct the poster who claims that it's useless with a 40gb ps3 - one of the best features in my opinion is that you can losslessly export the recordings via USB, which enables you to free up hard drive space and back the recordings up elsewhere. Only one or two pvrs allow you to do that and they're considerably more expensive.

Apologies if this has been mentioned (couldnt see it tho), but what format does this record in? Does it just dump the mpeg2 ts streams on the HDD or does it convert to MP4 or some other format?

The recordings are the straight broadcast stream. The resultant files have a .M2TS extension, which appears to be a mpeg 2 transport stream as far as I can tell. They can be remained to mpg and seem to behave as any other mpg file.

I love the fact Madonna is commenting on a PS3 product being ****, and doesn't even own a PS3....

Anyway, friend of mine has this and says its brilliant - menus are very easy to use, if you leave the PS3 on standby it'll turn on and record something for you if you series link - he's a big fan.

Excellent price, voted hot!

this is a dual tuner pc card in a plastic box.
yes, this deal is a very good price for playtv based on the rrp, but its £45 for a £20 card. so i cant see why everyone likes this so much.

earlier on someone said that they also had to save up £50 to upgrade their harddrive so they would have some extra space for things like this and Home etc...
so thats over £90 for this.

before i get shouted at, i would be described as a sony fanboy to people that know me so i am not just bashing this because its sony.
and i do own all the current consoles, although what console fanboyism has to do with this is anyones guess.
here are what i see are the positives and negatives for this are.

negatives
you can buy many standalone PVR's for the cost of this, and they come with a large dedicated harddrive (just search this very site for pvr's)

the PS3 runs at over 140watts (based on latest model ps3), a standalone pvr runs at 17watts (based on sky+ box info). and if watts were not an issue, then whay are we all replacing our lightbulbs!

the ps3 has a fan in it, a pvr has a far quieter and smaller fan. (yes, its far quieter than the xbox 360, but its not silent. fine when you have your tv on, but what about when the tv is off and you are recording, or streaming to the psp)

positives
you dont need an extra large box under the telly.

the interface is the best looking and slickest interface you will ever see on a pvr.

you may already have a ps3 and proper remote (i know i do)

it has good interaction with the psp

i certainly wouldnt be buying this, but if it is what you want then great. personally i would get this if it could be connected to a sat rather than freeview. freeview is good, but a little bit limited, hopefully this will change once the switchover has completed.

I own two playstation 3's. Japanese (with emotion engine) and a pal one i got for cheap so could'nt resist. i own 3 xbox360's a nintendo wii and about every other console thats ever come out.(with the exception of a few 80's ones which were out before i was born. (i also have playtv for one ps3 but i rarely ever use it provided i have virgin +). Anyhow i only record cartoons, or girls of the playboy mansion so you can imagine why i would call freeview useless.

I am also a humongous transformers fan, and i see why you disagree with me. i am an autobo. you are a decepticon.:?

Well, I'm only a 'fanboi' in the sense of I'm too poor for a PS3 (plus, I maybe think they're still a little bit too expensive compared to other consoles. (Considering Bluray drives are coming down in price now too)). But, this is a very cool device. Turning something you already own into a DVR, for a fraction of the price of a DVR, definately good thinking on Playstation's part.

Thanks for rep also.

someone that owns one or knows for sure, are these just for recording off freeview then and not your sky? or can you tape off sky with them?

Its doing my nut as im hearing all kinda answers

just freeview, only its inbuilt tuner.
you cant record from any thing else, like a camcorder, sky box, vhs etc...

Got one of these for £35 from woolies!!

It's not as good as sky plus. It's ok if you've got a larger hard drive.

It sometimes cocks up when your recording one thing whilst watching another, as in, it goes a bit "jittery".

Rich parents?! Cool!

Anyways, you sound like a tool. Off course your opinion would be that you're not so.......

Freeview useless? Yeah ok. Don't they have Cbeebies for you to watch?

If you don't like the concept of the product that's fine, nobody will have a problem with you. Don't be such an obnoxious fool giving out false information. If you don't know about something, keep your mouth shut, or at least research it before giving your views.

Grow up.

Can anyone confirm that it upscales SD Freeview footage?

I have one and use it on a 42" Panasonic plasma, picture quality is excellent as are the menus and program guide. It's a class act.
#40
Cheers is it a PX80? I know they do a pretty good job on SD anyway.
