PS3 Playstation 3 40Gb console £249.99 @ choicesuk.co.uk
This product is sold as tested with a damaged box.
I presume this comes with a 12 Month warranty?

DAMAGED BOX but product has been tested to ensure it is in full working order. Please note: Only one console per household. Deliveries can only be made to your billing address and within the UK. The Playstation 3 from Sony is the most powerful next generation games console and entertainment system, packed with features to die for. The new 40Gb version has all the great features you would expect from Sony, all at fantastic value.

Nice deal but be wary of their 'Damaged Box' disclaimer (DAMAGED BOX but product has been tested to ensure it is in full working order) as I'd recently ordered Guitar Hero 3 from them. When I recieved it it obviously had been 'used' with finger marks everywhere and packaged very poorly, then I found the guitar was faulty too!

I returned the item but as there was no longer any stock I got a refund. I phoned and e-mailed ChoicesUK saying they had stated the item was checked and in working order on the website and would they offer me some compensation to buy the 'new' product. They fobbed me off with a standard e-mail reply and a very hesitant and repetitive 'there's no stock at that price' phone call.

I have to say I was very disappointed with Choices response especialy as they'd sent me a faulty item and will now think twice before using them in the future. So just be prepared for the worst and don't expect any customer service and you'll be fine.

I could not find a post for this ( thats not to say it has not been posted before though! )
£30 is a reasonable saving for what if effect is the same item.....
I am still undecided and have not yet purchased so I am open to better deals...........

i bought one when it was 240 plus the 5% voucher...perfect condiiton. how could they get more stock thathas damadged boxes? i think its an excuse to drop it to a certain price before a certain time period, a loophole in the contract or something. only if the box is damadged you can drop the price to under 250 before 2009 or something like that

It was posted before, but they have hiked the price up by £10.

I have bought two "Box damaged" items(DS lite) from them 1 was perfect, the other was clearly a customer return.

Its a shame that people bother wasting their time posting items as rubbish as this one. Come on where is the bargin in this- honestly!

Should be a new section on here for this type of rubbish!

How true. Especially as they're also selling brand new ones for only £30 more.

I was thinking of getting a PS3 but then read that the 40gb versions weren't backwards compatible with PS2 games. Whats the point of that? Got lots of those games and I'm not going to buy lots of games, not at £40+ each.
I think I'll wait until either the prices go down or they bring out a new version that is backwards compatible. Wonder how long that might be?

Thank you for your input.
Have you got a ps3 bargain you would like to share?
I too would like to find it cheaper.........

Brand new ones are only £30 more, but £30 is a decent saving
and, as soon as you open your brand new one, it's used anyway!
I am trying to find out if these come with the standard 12 month warranty
I am sure they do............

I too bought GH3 from them in the same deal - mine was absolutely perfect bar the odd crease on the external box edges.

No complaints here.

Not going to happen, they removed the chipset from the PS3 that allowed the machine to be backwards compatible because of the issue with cost, Sony were losing a fair amount on each console sold, now they at least turn a small profit with the 40gb model. so unless they can come up with a software only emulation solution (although as anyone with a XBOX360 will tell you, this is far from ideal) then it's not going to be financially viable.
#14
Th 60Gb European (now OOP), and the 80Gb North American (still available) both have software emulation, although i have no idea how good it is.

And yeah, a £30 saving is quite a bit, it's enough for 2 (cheap) games, especially at a time when all the good PS3 deals have dried up. People keep seeming to vote cold because a month or more ago there were deals available that were cheaper - but they are over now. I'm certainly finding it hard to find a decent PS3 bundle.

I guess it's the luck of the draw. Glad you got a decent one. They shouldn't really be putting faulty customer returns in with genuine damaged boxed items though.

A friend of mine works for Choices UK HQ and i asked about this deal, he said they are mostly customer returns. You may get lucky and get a new one.

I was going to get him to buy the GTA IV PS3 pack for me with discount but Choices were out of stock so i bought the pack from play for £273 inc cash back delivered.

What is the point of buying a PS3 to play PS2 games?

I guess you may play something like MGS4 or wipeout HD and realise that it's your type of game and then pick up the old games so you can enjoy them as well. And yes it may be cheaper just to buy an old ps2, and a 40gb ps3 but I guess some people don't like to have all the extra wire's and space etc.

I guess each to their own :-D

Maybe, but it seems odd that it would be a deciding factor..

I swear this deal was £239.99 - £10 cheaper when it was last posted?

BTW people who ordered this last time said the console was pretty much brand new but 1 guy did get one that had been used, then returned.

It may be odd, but would they sell more if they could play PS2 games.
If the answer is "Yes" then there are a lot of people with the same view.

...so that you don't have to have two playstations under the TV...
One of the major comments from people is that if you have a lot of PS2 games then you will have a PS2 to play them on - but this is really missing the point. Of course you would use the vastly superior capabilities of the PS3 to get the best out of PS3 games - but there is still a viable reason for retaining this functionality - and is the reason I have held off buying one so far.
#24
Yep, thats exactly why I'm kind of holding off. I have a PS2 but I can't be having a ps2 with all it's cables and plugs out at the same time as a PS3 (and the tv, dvd, v+ etc) so I'd want to be able to play the games on the PS3. It's a fairly sensible thing to expect, especially as initially it was one of the things they sold it on!
You know if if I can't play them they'll just end up in a cupboard somewhere which is a massive waste (and I don't want to sell them, I want to play them!)

I had heard that the 80gb versions would be available in the UK, and so the software emulation (not perfect but works on the majority of games) would be possible that way. But no idea on timescale.
