Just been in browsing the Blu-ray bargains (some decent ones as already mentioned on HUKD for £4.98) and saw this on the wall, very tempting!

Appeared to be new as well rather than pre-owned but only the display box was out.

Seems instore only, £59.99 online even though the 'previous price' sticker said £39.99

Seems a good deal - but the price has been plunging of late, and I'm hoping to be able to pick one up for £20 after xmas. hopefully if they announce a new one...
#2
Prices will probably start going down now as they realised its never going to be able to support Freeview HD in the UK :(

Good price tho!

I have been looking for a good deal on this, thanks!

Can you elaborate on this.....is it technically impossible to have that much data through standard aerial?

Its not that, the PS3 freeview box simply wont support it, these are pretty good boxes but no series link and you have to have the wire hanging out off the front of your ps3 which is rubbish if you ask me

The hardware is capable of showing HD broadcaset in DVB-T but unfortunately when HD becomes available on Freeview, they're going to be broadcast in DVB-T2 which Play TV doesn't support and never will.

Freeview HD in the UK is being broadcast on DVB-T2, Play TV curently only decodes signals broadcast on DVB-T. A hardware upgrade is required to enable Play TV to decode UK Freeview HD.

Play TV does now handle HD broadcasts, but only those broadcast using the DVB-T transmitter, which is accross most of Europe.

the new freeview hd uses different compression tech and hardware, DVB-T2 standard and MPEG-4.

play tv and nearly all other normal settop boxes have the old hardware which can't decode DVB-T2 standard MPEG-4.

I bet Sony will eventually release a new version of Play TV no doubt called Play TV HD hence the price drop on the current model, no doubt in time for the world cup next year :)

And before anyone asks a firmware update won't fix it, as the tech is hardware based.

its simples, normal freeview is mpeg 2, freeview hd is mpeg 4. and it uses less bandwidth than mpeg 2 so its actually more efficient than normal freeview, so expect more channels and a big push to upgrade to freeview HD eventually.

Bolded for the very important point there :-D

As for USB hanging out of the front, minor point methinks!

I have one, and it's great. Took me ages to find so I hope this helps someone.

I'm pretty sure PlayTV HD will be coming out soon, as it already released in Australia, and the price for the current model is going lower and lower.
#12
Apparently these are really good for people living on the Irish border as they pick up both UK Freeview and Irish terrestrial DTT.

On a side note I've been really impressed since the digital switchover happened in the North West (Granada region). Yes there has been problems with people picking up the Welsh channels on positions 1-4 but if you've got the slightest bit of technical nouse about you then that's pretty simple to sort out.

The Freeview signal is now so strong that I can pick up every single channel (MUX) on a perfect picture in the bedroom using an indoor aerial and the aerial is just sat on top of the Sky box and nowhere near the window and we live a good 25+ miles away from the transmitter.

No its not, its the same as the one we have here.

I'm not blaming you specifically, but people really need to take note that we will be using a different HD system to pretty much everywhere else that is incompatible with current hardware. Australia are using the old version so this will work in HD over there.
#14
Whose bloody smart idea was it to use a completely different system for freeviewHD than the rest of the world and is it too late to scrap the DVB-T2 standard ?

If no one else is gonna use this tech (dvb-t2) then it will be expensive to manufacture and costly to upgrade for the UK public, it makes no sense!

EDIT

Actually i think i'll get one as dvb-t2 will probably never make it to manufacturing

Good old rip off britain....lets introduce a different system to the rest of the world so the british suckers have to buy new hardware........this country really is the pits.....we should not invest into this technology so they have no choice but to do as the rest of the world are doing...

DVB-T2 is better technology than DVB-T and will allow for more HD channels to be broadcast than DVB-T. So what if other countries want to use older less advanced technology for their HD broadcasts I'd sooner my country used the best system possible.

I have Play.tv and its really good. Turns your PS3 into a video recorder. The interface is fast and easy to use.

I would advise anyone that buys this to get an aerial splitter and connect aerial to tv and PS3.

Play.tv will not support Freeview HD as its MP4 and this little box does not have the specialised chip to decode MP4.

But for this price its a buy. You will find it very usefull, tv guide and recording is excellent. Good at picking up signals too. Play.tv get some channels my TV doesn't.
#18
is this just like sky plus then?

record and pause live tv with series link?

does it have its own menu system. channel guide just like sky?

or is this just a freeview box, which allows you to only record the freeview channels on it and watch them through th tv your ps3 is connected to?

thanks

Just picked last one up from Milton Keynes, it's actually £29.98. Mega bargain! H+R added!

This one may not be able to do UK HD, but it can upscale pretty darn well, and they're constantly improving the upscaling. Yes it won't be proper HD but it looks good all the same

I have to agree, they have done a great job with this product, and to be honest, if you already have a ps3, you wont find any other decent freeview recorder for anywhere near this price. Upscaling is really good. Also if the rest of the world is using this version, Sony are more likely to keep updating it and concentrate on this edition than if they make one specifically for the UK.

It doesn'T have series link - yet. it is apparently coming in in a future software update, as is extending the EPG to 14 days.

My tv aerial doesnt work in my house, which is fine because A) im too tight to fix it and B) I have Vermin Media.
Would I be able to split the virgin media cable and feed that to Play TV or does it have to be a standard aerial cable?

A cable TV feed will not work with Freeview. They're two completely different systems.

Since you live in Manchester then you should be fine picking up the highly powered Freeview signals from Winter Hill with just an indoor aerial since DSO switchover happened earlier this month.

I'm using a Telecam TCE2000 indoor aerial here in Liverpool. It's brilliant and picks up every channel perfect. Bought it from eBay for £6 - it's probably the best indoor aerial on the market!

It is a box. It has two connections. one is an aerial, the other is a USB. if you connect an aerial signal into one, it sends video out the other. Satelites do not give aerial signals, even if you were able to jury-rig the connectivity. Without a PS3 (or a pc using third party software) you cannot use it, it has no scart out, or VGA connectivity, otr anything like that. It does not act as a freeview box, it allows the PS3 to act as a freeview box.

I know you can record one channel and watch another, I do not remember if you can record 2 things at once.

Just a long shot but I'm sure sony can update the ps3's firmware to do the decoding of DVB-T2
#30
you can get this for even cheaper if u go to pcworld or currys and tell them to price match and give u a further 10% discount

Possibly but pushing the decoding to the software side would add quite a workload to the PS3.
