i have the 250gb and just love the ps3 just for the functionality, watch high def movies that stream from my laptop wirelessly to my ps3 through the ps3 media server.

If you can hold on longer you will be able to get this with a couple of games during the Christmas period for similar price and after Christmas it will be even cheaper because they will be getting rid of this 120gb version. Source = my neighbour whom works at the Stratford branch

Yes, the 160GB and 320GB models have been common knowledge for a while, there's nothing with regards to bundles released to Morrisons staff though.

Heat added, great for those who don't/won't utilise such a big HDD.

As I've said in another PS3 deal thread, for those who choose to get this from Morrisons (or even Best Buy) if possible, look for the revised model of the PS3 Slim.

These should have the smaller RSX chip which would mean less power required and heat generated.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/sony-ps3-slim-250gb-with-2-x-offici/742916?p=9239697

[Re-worded]

Upon purchase, ask the store employee for him/her/you to look on the box for either the following codes, "CECH-2101A" or "CECH-2101B"

"CECH-2101A" or "CECH-2101B" will indicate whether or not it has the revised RSX chip which is smaller thus requiring less power and generating less heat - this revision was intended to save additional costs when manufacturing each unit.

I assume the codes are for the 120GB and 250GB SKU respectively - any other code on the box would indicate the first line of PS3 Slim consoles.

I would imagine that Sony are manufacturing all PS3 Slims with the revised 40nm RSX chip as standard so looking for the revised chip only applies for the 120GB and 250GB models.

Hope this information helps when/if you fellow members purchase a PS3 Slim and happy gaming,
Scar

There's some smoke blowing if ever i saw it....

What exactly do you mean...Oh yeah just got a fridge the other day, it was expensive but definately worth it for what it can do keeping food nice and cool wise, plus + holds beers!

I wouldn't be commenting if it weren't for the fact an Xbox 360 does pretty much the same thing with equal capabilities for half the price minus a bluray player. I'm no xbox nutter, I own both but comments like yours are meaningless and completely pointless.

I mean come on, do you think people are going to read your post and say..."oh yeah, hadn't thought of that before...duhhhhhhh"

if it's cheap then buy it and install the extra memory yourself. It takes literally 5 mins to install and memory is cheap.
#14
Its storage space. Not memory. Come on people. Sort your terminology out :)

I Fully agree with HanTank and can see the point you were making, £200.00 even for a Sony blu ray player is exceptional, (its not like you typed out a feature list!!) , just a general comment jumped on by an Xbox fanBoy!!

You seem like an angry kind of guy, good luck with that. My point is I paid £200 for a PS3 slim at launch, and thought that maybe by now the price would have dropped a bit, like the XBOX360 etc. The PS3 has probably maintanied its higher price point due to its capabilities apart from just gaming. Im not sure why your comparing the PS3 to the XBOX360 but as you did, gaming wise the XBOX360 has an edge on the PS3 but the PS3 is very capable media wise far more than the XBOX360 (I have both consoles) and a lot of other BluRay players or media players. BluRay, Web browsing, ability to store movies directly to its internal hard drive and watch MKV's with 5.1 audio etc... These extra features probably allow it to sell for a higher price, with the XBOX360 your just getting a cheap game playing machine that can go on facebook etc. The PS3 does offer more...

You seem to know your stuff.
Can you tell me where I can get a 360 for £100, and then how do I copy about 35GB of films/TV shows in MP4 format to it?

So basically you're saying if you're buying a console for gaming, buy an Xbox 360. If gaming isn't so important, but you're more bothered about movies, get the PS3.

Game / Gamestation are doing Xbox 360s around £70-80 with 12 month guarantee... as for watching movies through it, i've had no problems watching avi's via an external hard drive through it previously. Though obviously not a patch on bluray quality! :)

Apart from the increased storage sizes upto 160 & 320gb, is there any other reason to get the updated PS3 instead of the 'old' slim 120/250gb? Was considering getting one, but the prices are just a bit too steep at the mo...

You can pick up an second hand xbox 360 for less than £100 from Game or Gamestation (not recommended though). As for copying films to MP4 format....Google is your friend.

So he's comparing a 2nd hand 360 to a new PS3 for a price comparison? Seems stupid.
I am not bothered about the quality, I want them on the hard drive, not external.

There's no difference, apart from what was mentioned earlier about the revised chip.
#22
Interesting view Matt, not that straightforward though, currently Xbox often has the edge on most popular games but other considerations are.
Which controller you are most comfortable with
Which exclusive games you want access to
Reliability - do some research on that
Longevity of consoles and future developments
Core purpose of the console (DVD player, media hub)
Both great consoles and if you have the time in your life.. buy both!!!

No Im not saying that, the PS3 does have some very good games. Im just saying that the PS3 offers more than just games, maybe thats why it can maintain a higher price. At £200 for what the PS3 can do is very good value. I really hate fanboy stuff so don't want to get into a discussion over which console is better/cheaper etc. I have both consoles and there both good, if I want to play a game its usually on the 360 but if im gonna sit and watch a movie then it always on the PS3 it is so much better quality..

It depends on the codecs within it I think.

Good deal, could be a lot of people buying this as their 2nd PS3 now that it's hackable!

Spoken to Morrisons customer service and they have no knowledge of this promotion so it seems it may be store specific. Just wish I was nearer a Best Buy.

How can you view MKVs on a ps3? Thought you have to convert to mp4 first?
#33
mp4, urgh, don't use that, use mkv2vob, it'll change it to mpg for you in a matter of minutes, or stream via PS3 Media Server for on-the-fly conversion.
#34
kev_the_great

How can you view MKVs on a ps3? Thought you have to convert to mp4 first?

You don't need to convert them to mp4? Divx, Xvid, WMV or X264 etc all play on PS3 without any conversion. For MKV (X264 Video) all you need to do is change the container from MKV, The video is unaltered. MKV2VOB can do this, you keep the 5.1 audio or whatever track was on the original and can then either stream the video or store it direct on the PS3 hard drive.
#35
Or download PS Media Server and transcode on the fly...
#36
thanks!

Gamston had some at this price earlier today

for what its worth i have both and prefer PS3, because it does everything i need and it does it quietly, **** them x boxes are noisy.
