Just upgrade yours properly, I doubt 160 GB will be enough anyway. My 60GB is full up and mostly with just nonsense really - bits 'n bobs, demos, psn game downloads, a dozen cd's, a film or 2 + don't forget many will have PLayTV (like me) and that just loves munchin' on your GB's!

I think 250-320GB sounds good - but I may go higher if I can as my PS3 is my everyday main media centre.

It's alot easier to upgrade your PS3's HDD than you think - guide here

Mmmm, can't decide if this is a good deal, or just an average deal.

I suppose it depends if you want the games on offer. They're all cheap ones though. Ratchet & Clank is about £20, Gran Turismo can be bought for £15 ish and the other two are £4.99 downloads. So that's £45 worth of games, max, which you may or may not want.

In terms of the PS3 itself, I believe that there are still the odd 40GB version available around the £250 mark, and a 160GB hard drive will cost you £30 max, and they are easy to fit yourself.

Does seem weird that the original USA/Japan 20gb version would of been enough as most people change the drive anyway, but then I suppose Sony make a load by putting in these bigger drives and dropping the smaller model each time forcing you to buy the bigger drive at their price..

Its a good deal if you want the extra's, you could attach a external hard-drive for extra storage (i.e Western Digital already has correct formatting) giving you 500 gig 0r 1TG even

no funnily enough, sony dont regard backwards compatability a good enough sellpoint nowadays.

I think they do it's just a big problem for them, if they install the PS2 hardware again it will put the price up and it was still not 100% backward compatible when they did it before, if they use emulation then it costs them for the teams to make the games backward compatible which again equals a price increase or they lose even more money.

But they've already had software emulation in some of the old 60GB consoles. So it should just be a case of making that software available to these consoles. For some reason they still choose not to do it. I suspect it may return one day. They just have to wait long enough for those that bought the 60GB and paid for a backwards compatible console forget that they paid extra for something that'll be given free to everyone.

Given how powerful the cell processor is supposed to be, it should be able to emulate the PS2 with no trouble at all.

the Ratchet and Clank game included is the downloadable one, I think it is either £10 or £15 from the PSN store. It's not as good, nor as long as the one that came out on disc last year (which can be had for £15).

Not a hot deal for me as PS3 can be had cheaper with smaller HDD and then easily upgraded. This bundle is likely to include dualshock controller rather than the standard one which might be worth considering.

Given how easy Sony have made it to upgrade the memory and how cheap it is now (320gb for under £50) theres no real reason to go for this over a cheaper 80gb ps3 (obvioulsy if they are the same price its a no brainer you go for the 180)

With regards to backwards compatability its not really an issue, if you own ps2 games you have a ps2 to play them on - I've got the 60gb with backwards compatability and used it once (tomb raider legend) when i first got it due to the slight lack of games back then, however that is no longer the case and you would have to be mad to want to play a ps2 game over the quality games now available especially as they are coming thick and fast.

Well, I wanted it because the other half has every singstar that they've ever brought out for the PS2. And didn't want to have to buy them again to use them on the PS3. They're fixing this, though.

There's also a load of PS2 games (ICO, God of War 1&2, etc) that I have yet to play and wouldn't mind doing so at some point. If emulation is done via software (ie no cost to Sony) and the PS3 upscales the games for larger TVs, I'd have to be mad to play them on a PS2 when I could play them on a backward compatible PS3.
#18
I believe the PS2 backwards compatibility also relied on some hardware, which has now been removed from the PS3's.

Er, the DualShock controller is the standard one now!

Why do people still hold out hope for another PS3 SKU with PS2 compatibility? It just isn't going to happen.

id love to know where?? i was gonna get a 40 and upgrade the hdd but everywhere ive looked the 40b is the same price as the 80gb.. missed the costo ones recently for £211  cheapest unit is the 80g from dixons £280 delivered with a voucher plus £10 topcashback (£270).. i was even tempted to end my mobile contract and get the same one from the carphone wharehouse with a free ps3/mobile and £45 quid cashback... still cant decide!!!!

i was referring to the possibility of buying a cheaper 40gb bundle which has normal sixaxis and upgrading the HDD. If you bought this 160gb bundle you'd have the DS3 already and therefore wouldn't need to fork out for a DS3 if you want one.

Please note that "csiman" was suspended as a HotUKDeals member around 12:10pm (UK time) today (just after I made an offer on the 60b PS3 console).
