Directed by Michael Mann and starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard, Public Enemies is an American crime-film set during the 1930 depression in Chicago and follows the alluring bank robber John Dillinger (Depp).
Public Enemies tells the story of the last few years of Dillinger's life, where his bank raids made him a hero in the eyes of the public and his charm endeared him to almost everyone. So far, he has had the run of the city and has had little trouble from the authorities, but all that begins to change when the FBI is born.
FBI director J. Edgar Hoover and his best agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), personally hunt-down Dillinger and his crew, determined to put an end to his crime spree. Dillinger is a slippery master-criminal, but when Purvis makes a gang of ex-lawmen into official agents, Dillinger is betrayed and outwitted.
