I love pies! Are there any genuine small time bakers you can share who make their own pies? In Wiggin or nearby?

I have lived in the Midlands for near enough 12 years now, and STILL can't get over the shock of getting presented one of these in a Fish & Chip shop, a sea of dark gloop in flabby pale greasy pastry, more reminiscent of a pudding than a pie. Disgusting doesn't adequately describe it. To add insult to injury, it was something like double the price a pie in a chip shop would be in the North East or Scotland at the time too. never made the mistake of ordering a second one!
Since then, they have appeared in every supermarket now too:-( As poor as the average supermarket pie is, even 3 for £1.30 meat pies in the likes of Netto are better (albeit "better" is a word I am reluctant to use for lack of another more appropriate one, perhaps less revolting is more accurate!)

If you think these are the best pies around, then there is no hope for food in this country.

Nasty Southern pies.
I'd like to recommend Hollands pies, but as they're now a small part of Northern Foods, I can't.
My local baker still makes nice pies though !

They had to close the Japanese electronics shop in Wigan.

Too many "Pie-Eaters" asking the sales assistants, " Can I get a Pioneer".

:-D

So true, people really think these factory produced mechanically recovered meat "things" are good food, which is precisely the reason small scale butchers & bakers are going to the wall, and have become so hard to find.
They have to sell them in foil cases as they are so sloppy, and flaccid they can't stand up on their own!

Odd that you seem so bothered by it to post then, 18 posts in 13 months and I qualify for one of them! Such an honour.
Presumably that's to increase your MINISCULE post total!

Goodbye. You now join the others in my ignore list, so don't waste the effort again.

also £1.o0 in sainsburys too, and yea pukka pies are the best in the world (no chipshop pie compares to it!!!) mmmmmm

Sorry, got to be Hollands Meat & Potato every time for me, but only from the chippy. For some reason the soggy pastry just adds to the whole experience when accompanied by chippy chips and gravy.

Would never get them to cook at home though, it's not the same.

It's very much a North West thing.
I don't think if you asked anyone from the rest of the whole country to list pie fillings they liked, few would even think of meat AND potato as a type of pie without being prompted.

But they ARE chipshop pies, I only ever saw them in chip shops until relatively recently!

True, but then again I'm proud to come from Lancashire.

I remember when I was at Uni, I went to visit one of my Uni mates over the summer in Brighton, and when his parents asked me what I wanted from the chippy I got the strangest looks when I asked for chips and gravy. Mind you apparently, after I went home they decided to make their own gravy to go with chips and realised what they'd been missing out on!

It's good to educate those less fortunate sometimes.

I wouldn't recommend putting money into a chain of meat & potato pie shops outside of the North West! You could always try Dragons Den! ;-)

If you saw the Hairy Bikers on TV recently, they compared just that.... a North West Meat & Potato pie versus a North East met pie. I wouldn 't have wasted the energy cooking the meat & potato pies & bringing them half way across the country, as they are sadly inferior. I didn't say they were not nice in their own right, as they most probably are; but not any serious competition for a decent meat pie! They might just about qualify for a contest involving pasties though, as apart from shape they are much more like that than a pie, however I suspect a decent Scots Bridie would win that competition anyway, and the Cornish pasty behind that before the meat and potato pie was in with a chance!

In the North East we had a similar product made in traditional pie shops (these are now very rare everywhere!), but as it was always much cheaper than the premium proper pie, it was cobbled into a sort of flat pasty-like shape to sell to the kids! Very nice, ate many of them as I grew up, (even if they were almost meat free enough to sell to vegetarians!) but I would have always opted for the meat pie then, if I had the money!

The actual food content of this "pie" can only be worth 50p or less.

Jeez, it's unbelieveable that people actually think that cheap, nasty, sh*itty food is a good thing and are prepared to spend a significantly higher proportion of their income on cra*ppy consumer goods:?

If people feed this to their children on a regular basis then the country is well and truly fecked.
