Nintendo’s long-forgotten fighting gem makes its triumphant return thanks to the Nintendo Wii and its motion sensing control scheme.
In the days of the NES and Super Nintendo, Punch-Out!! was king of the fighters, giving players a string of updates and sequels that made boxing a colourful, simple and, mostly importantly, fun sport. Over the years, many titles have tried to recreate its formula of wacky characters and bright visuals – most notably Ready 2 Rumble Boxing – but few have managed to compete. Players who hoped to face off against the game’s final challenger wouldn’t make it far without some use of strategy, as each boxer had its own unique weak spot to be exploited by the miniature Little Mac.
The Nintendo Wii seems the ideal console to bring the series back to the masses. The basic principles of careful timing and finding weakness remain the same, but through the use of the Wii Remote and nunchuk attachment, players can swing each hook themselves in a similar manor to the boxing of Wii Sports.
Punch-Out!! on Wii is a love letter to Punch-Out!! titles of the past, the only tweaks to its classic formula being responsive motion controls and a colourful new visual style.
