Beware as this is the original Phenom with the bug. Very poor performance for a quad core so not worth it at this price.

Ebuyer have a better bundle for a Quad Core Athlon II with an Asus AM3 board and 2GB Patriot DDR3 for £149

Appreciate the time to post it mate althoug, there were some big know issues with this cpu, and it was £159.99 with 5 games including COD:MW2 about 2 months after its release so not really a great bargain.

cheers anyway.

Or even better you can get an Athlon II X4 640 3GHz, Asus AM3 board and 4GB Corsair 1600MHz DDR3 for £151 from Ebuyer. This AMD stuff is so cheap.

Hi all,
my wife was looking to get our pc upgraded when we noticed Maplins have a special offer on the go, so i have a few questions, firtly hears the specs on my pc at the moment....

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core processor 4600+ 2.40 GHz
2.00 GB Memory
Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE nForce 430 graphics card
32 bit operating system

So would i be able to upgrade to their quad offer ?
I have vista only on the recovery dvd disks, since its not on its own i guess i would have to buy this too as the recovery disks would be useless ?
Would it fit my tower ?
Would it be a waste to upgrade from my current spec ?
Cheers Ian

First, do you really need to upgrade? what do you want from your pc, what do you do with it??? Really, IMO, unless your doing hardcore gaming, or high processing, like video authoring/editing, theres no need to upgrade... dont just upgrade for the sake of it!

If you simply browse the web, use Office, play the odd game, then your dual core is fine... You could benefit from simply going to 4gb ram and getting Windows 7 64 bit.

You dont say what brand your pc is, or is it a DIY? The fact you have Vista recovery disks suggests it may be a Dell, or HP, or similar... The prob you can sometimes have with these retail pc's is that new hardware may not always fit, e.g, a friend of mine had a HP, and went to uprade his motherboard etc, but his new board wouldnt fit int he case as the mounting holes were in different places! Recovery disks are likely to only work on the hardware they came with, eg, Dell branded Vista(OEM) restore disks, will only install on Dell pcs...

I personally wouldnt buy any pc stuff from maplins... things are generally cheap for a reason, and you do get what you pay for! Id stick to the likes of novatech, ebuyer, overclockers, etc....

For around £200.. you can get barbones pcs, which are case, psu, motherboard, ram, cooler... you just need OS, DVD drive and HDD. Check out the barebones section on novatech.

But honestly, think why you need to upgrade in the first place... If your pc is running slow, its amazing what a spring clean can do, clear temp files, clutter, defrag, or if your brave, a clean install.. and you pc will be back to its best again!!!! Many of my friends have complained their pc's have become slow, its amazing how much clutter you can collect if not regularly maintaining it.. theres plenty of free tools, like ccleaner that will clear all this clutter, then run a defrag, remove unused programs etc, get rid of browser toolbars... an hour or so later, their pc is much quicker!

This offer is not good really.. people should really check around for alternatives before posting.. e.g:

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/bundles.html

Novatech Motherboard Bundle - £155
AMD II X4 640
4GB 1333Mhz DDR3
AMD 690G Motherboard
Onboard ATI Radeon 1250 Graphics

There also other good deals in the posts above :-)
