Anybody got this? Is it good or is it a "use once, few items bent!"?!

Thinking about it, pointless for me as I have a Ford Galaxy! Dont think jack will be any good.

I bought one. As you'd expect it's made by Hilka - the really cheap tool people. TBH it's not wonderful, but it depends how often you'll be using it, my thoughts were that for £25 I could preform the oil change on my car and inspect the underside about 1-2 times a year - so £25 does the job. Hilka seem to make all the cheap tools for the major retailers - a near identical set is available on the Halfords site - but for £75. If it's made by the same people then the Halford's set is ridiculously overpriced.

Argos originally retailed this for £50, then £37 & now £25. IMHO £20-25 is a realistic price, again £50 would have been overpriced.

Argos sold off the hika branded version of this years ago for £9.99 - lucky enough to pick one up from my local.

Everything still going strong although the car creeper is unused.

I bought one from Woolworths, just the jack and stands, for about £30 last year, of course, at this price, it's not great, but it's more than adequate for the occasional home use, and much better to use if you have a flat at home, than the normal car jack.. Always make sure you always use the axel strands though, on any jack, not just this one

What?

You paid £6.99 for the same set, including the 2tonne trolley jack?

Was it knocked off or are you perhaps mistaken?

No they definately sold it off cheap - it was in their RO sale. Found an old post of mine on another forum that confirms it was £9.99

Contents:

Hilka 2 Tonne Trolley Jack Combo Kit.
Kit comprises: 2000kg trolley jack with a lifting range of 14cm to 33cm. Car creeper for ease of working under a properly supported vehicle. 2000kg foldable axle stands. 2 wheel chocks. Magnetic dish. Oil pan. 35cm/14in wheel nut wrench (17mm, 19mm, 21mm and 23mm). Oil filter wrench.

IIRC I got a dirt devil pressure washer for £10 as well :)

Yeah I also got this in the RO sale. It took a few years but I finally got around to using it and the trolley jack works fine as do the axle stands and the creeper was very useful for replacing my washer pump. A real bargain at £9.99 but not too bad at £25 either.

The jack will no doubt have a poor lift height - not a bad deal though.

Why not? I'm sure even the Galaxy is less than 2 tonnes unladen whatever engine you have.

All Galaxys, both past and present models are below 2 metric tonne.

I think what aj_aziz is talking about are the high, very-easy-to-crush-with-a-trolly-jack sills. This is a well known issue with mk1 / mk2 Galaxys with garages frequently crushing them by mistake. It's easy to avoid by using some packing wood on the head of the jack (careful it doesn't slip out though ).

I have a mk2 Galaxy and can confirm that trolly jacks like the one in this tread CAN lift a Galaxy with no problems as long as you take care not damage the sill.

Thanks for this. Just wanted it confirmed. Will pick one up today as I was given a Galaxy from my sister and as it has been sitting for the last 2 years, Im gonna need to flush out all fluids. Also need to fix a new catalytic as some thieving B****** nicked it!

got this a couple of years back instore reduced to a ridiculous £7.50 (went to the till with the price at £15 and got a further reduction!) - I use it on our Polo and seems to work fine for oil changes - changing tyres, fixing/fine tuning the brakes etc

Ah, that did seem to be the poster's concern.

The best way to avoid damage to the 'sill' is not to ever use this area for lifting a modern car.

Modern vehicles don't have traditional 'sills' but this part is now just part of the one piece body side panel - it is mainly cosmetic and not designed to support the weight of the vehicle.

The only exception to this is the specific strengthened area designed for use with the jack supplied with the vehicle that also has a special support designed to fit over the lower welded flange joint. Even then, I've seen some older vehicles that have been weaked by corrosion simply collapse when someone has attempted to lift them is this manner.

Much better to position the jack under the vehicle's longitudinals (formally the vehicle's chassis) ensuring it avoids any pipework or electrical wiring. This is where the vehicle would be lifted on a modern 2 poster in most garages and customers should pay careful attention to any garage/tyre fit service that uses a trolley jack as to where the grease monkey positions the jack. As you correctly state, locating it on an unsuitable area of the vehicle can easily cause extensive damage.
