All my vehicles for the last 35yrs have had Alternators fitted which have recharged the Battery automatically.
I can't see what purpose these serve

Because in winter the battery can become flat overnight.
Or maybe you one day accidently leave your lights on or something.

[edit] sorry, realised you're probably being sarcastic.

If someone leaves lights on or cold weather causes a problem you might need it. Currently I have an issue with my car which might be caused by short journeys (ie not enough getting back into the battery after the drain of starting a car) and the cold weather.

Currently my cars on a trickle charge to get it back up. Chargers like this can also be used to fast charge which will get you started if the battery is partially flat.

I don't usually have an issue but this winter both mine and my girlfriends car have had problems. Also the jump starter I got from Maplins wouldn't start my car when one of these style things did. Sadly these don't help if ya stranded with no mains.

Just because you haven't had a problem doesn't mean everyone doesn't otherwise these things wouldn't be on the market.

Indeed starting a car when it's -13c isn't as easy for a battery than starting when it's warmer. A good product to have even if your battery appears to be ok, although the price is pretty steep given what folks on here have said.

Not really I have never had a problem starting a car fitted with an alternator.
All my cars have had a switch to turn off the lights which are also visible to most people with normal eyesight.
Obviously you are an exception
