I used to love my Raleigh Chopper when I was a kid so I decided to get my son one for christmas and I must say they haven't changed a bit, cool as ever. Been looking for the best price on one Halfords where doing one for £265.00. But I found that JE James Cycles where doing the same bike for just £200. Bargain!

Fortunately NOT in the middle of the frame like they used to be...when the knob fell off mine in the 70's I nearly lost a testicle when I slid off the seat

They have changed by the look of it, where is the gear stick?

The whole thing is totally ridiculous now, nothing like the cool seventies cruiser. Your child will disown you.

I had a grifter and before that a striker. But wanted a chopper..... Me and my mate had walkie talkies and pretended to be those guys from C. H. I. P. S

Not being funny OP but times have changed - maybe a BMX or a similar - think of your child's rep amongst the other kids in the park :)

The seat is also split in two on the new one.

I had one of these, and the smaller, similar tomahawk before it. Wonder whatever happened to them?

come on man.. the long seat and unique gear stick MADE the chopper.... that's gotta be worth a testicle- you've got two?!

You let it rot away in the back garden like most other kids did probably!

There was a design fault though, when you pulled a wheelie (which was a mammoth task due to the grifters weight vs strength of an 8yr old) you'd unknowingly gear shift due to it being on the handle bars!!!

We have some both old and new choppers in the shop and the new ones are vaguely similar but not as good, the seat is messed up and the gearing was iconic

Ha Ha we called it a mogger or a takey ;) used to have two of my mates hanging off the back and one on the handlebars!! remember the label on the back seat? "No pillion passengers" completely ignored that ;)

As I recall, they were rubbish. In fact all Raleigh pre bmx bikes were. Now if this deal was for a Super Tuff...

Loving the nostalgia on this thread. C.H.I.P.S, walkie talkies (omg!) Choppers (carried three kids on ours, two on the seats and one on the back), Grifters (snotty kid round the corner had one, he grew up to be a great family friend) and Tomahawks. Walking home from school, no hope of being robbed by another child as I had nothing of value, apart from a penny chew, knew all the kids within a 1 mile radius, and that was in London. We were satisfied with what is now seen as so little but it meant so much... Anyone remember the Tom and Jerry tricycles, with the two steps on the back, so someone could stand on it, holding the cyclist's shoulders. Who'd a thought one Chopper could evoke so many happy memories.

Till the Sturmey Archer gear thing in the back wheel gave way when you were going for it in 3rd gear, and you suspended on the crossbar by the groin with your feel flailing along the ground. :p

Should have gone to Specsavers....

I had a yellow Mk II that would take two of my mates and my skateboard between the seat "hoop" and the back of the seat itself. Awesome bike. The plastic window that showed you what gear you were in was lost, but the rest of the bike was great.

My mum sold it.

GUTTED.

front is fine but soon as you get toward rear seat looks awful!
